Senior Band 1st hour and still smilin'. DEDICATED TO: MR. DAN KERNS The Class of 1980 and the annual staff are proud to dedicate the 1980 Laker to Mr Dan Kerns. Mr. Kerns has taught at Big Lake for the last four years as Jr- Sr. Band Director. The first April Fools Concert was held under his direction in 1977 and is now a major happening. In past years the band has gone to State or District Contest as a large group, small ensembles and solos; and has done well. The band whether in a very important concert or playing The Stripper at halftime, has received many compliments. THANKS to one super person! Molly and Brad were crowned Queen and King to reign over the week's events. Monday was also Dress-up Day the beginning of the poster con- test and buttons went on sale. On Tuesday each class dressed differently. We had everything from Hippies to Back to the 50's. The highlight of the day was the Student-Faculty Volleyball game which the Men Faculty won overall. The senior Slave Auction followed the game. On Wednesday, Toga Day , the five slaves took care of their masters by carrying books, busing trays, cleaning cars, etc. Thursday was Wild and Crazy Day and shakers went on sale. The Volleyball team added to the festivities by downing Rockford that evening. Friday, the traditional Blue and Gold Day, was dressed up with carnations on sale. The poster contest ended with the Se- niors in first place and the Freshmen a close second. The Pep Fest psyched up both our Football players and the Hornet Fans. After a 7-0 victory over Kimball, the week concluded with the music of Passion at the dance. Right: Posters were hung from floor to ceiling all during the week. VOLLEYBALL The Big Lake Girls Volleyball Team was 8-6 overall and 3-4 in conference standings for 4th place. Obtaining as high as 4th place enabled Big Lake to receive two individuals for the All-Confer- ence selections. These two were Sherry Peterson and Shelly Lemonds. Laurie Peterson received Honorable Mention. One of the many highlights of the season occurred when Laurie Peter- son served a perfect game, 18 straight points, in the 2nd game of the season against Royalton. The Varsity team consisted of seven players, with Sherry Peterson as the main setter, and Cindy Wold filling in as alternate. These two players were key in- dividuals in setting up our offense. All seven players worked well together both offensively and defensively to improve their '79 season record dramatically over previous years. B-team was 6-8 overall and 2-5 conference. Synde Miller and Sue Hayes were the main team point scorers as well as team leaders in many other areas such as sets, blocks, and spikes. After graduating many seniors of the highly suc- cessful '78 squad many observers figured the Hornets to be cellar dwellers in '79. Even many local fans figured the gridders would get killed by lopsided scores. Showing a lot of character with excellent leadership from the seniors and significant contributions from the seniors and significant contributions from the under- classmen the Big Lake Hornets had the last laugh. Armed with four of the Conference's best receivers, aided by an offensive line with a lot of heart the Hornets blitzed opposing defenses through the air with over 1,000 yards in passing offense. The defense also rose to the task with the motto, Bend but don't Break , by racking up 3 shutouts and allowing only one team to score more than two touchdowns. Captains Brad Thomas, Roger Loegering, Bill Smith, and Mark Wold provided excellent leadership for the team. Brad Thomas was selected to the All Conference 1st Team while John Kocisko, Bill Smith and Mark Wold were selected to the All Conference 2nd team. Bill Smith led the Defense with 116 total tackles. Indeed, when the season was over the underrated Hornets had produced for themselves a winning, powerful team. Led by Senior Shelly Lemonds, the team was off to a 10-1 mid-season record. Highlighting this streak was All-State Lemonds scoring her 1000th career point (at Royalton), a big win over arch rival Monticello and an overtime win over Becker to go 7-0 in CMC action. An untimely injury and two one point losses set the girls back but they put things together when they needed to and went into District 19 tournament action seeded 4th. They hastily beat Holdingford in the Quarterfinals, but got a lesson from eventual State Champion Albany in a semi-final loss. Hornet pride and determination pulled them right back as they beat Becker for the Consolation Championship and brought home their second trophy in as many years. Teamwise, the Hornets set 2 records: single game scoring, 72 points and most wins, 15, for a Girls Bas- ketball team. All Conference awards were given to Shelly Lemonds (who led the Conference in scoring with a 23 points per game average) and Laurie Pe- terson. Dana Westrum was given honorable mention. Most Improved was Terri Lemonds. The Seniors will be sorely missed but an experienced bench will be a team to contend with again next year. The Hornets joined the Central Minnesota Conference this year, which is overall a tougher conference. They were plagued with injury and illness with only 4 games that were played with a full ros- ter. With only 3 seniors returning (Mark Wold, Roger Loegering, and Bubba Smith), there was a lack of experience with the Hornets Squad. The Highlight of the season was the 47-37 victory over the Monticello Redmen. This was the 1st year that the sport was in a conference, (even though the team has been in existence for 12 years at BLHS.) The girls started the season with Val Mertens being in- jured at the 1st home conference meet. Her injury ended up to be her last gymnastic performance with the doctor telling her the ankle would need the rest of her jr. year and all of her sr. year to heal. Both her and her teammates shared the news painfully, and dedicated the rest of the season to Val. The BLHS varsity conference record was 6-2 with Big Lake tying Sartell and Maple Lake for CONFERENCE CHAM- PIONS! (Our B team was undefeated at 8-0). Individual highlights included Sue Hayes, Michelle Keeler and Cindy Wold making All-Conference with Val Mertens as Honorable Mention. At Sub-Regions BL placed 5th out of 9 schools with Sue Hayes receiving 2 medals for placing 2nd on vault and the uneven bars, and Cindy Wold for placing 3rd on vault. Michelle Keeler led the team as team captain during the season. She has been a BLHS gymnast since her elemen- tary years and was the only senior on the team. Michelle's leadership, personality, and high level of competition will be missed greatly, but the rest of the squad will be back next year for hopefully another SUPER season. 29 WRESTLING All of the hard work . . . really pays off. In Its first full year of varsity competition the Big Lake Wrestling team accomplished many goals. As a team we beat St. Johns Prep 33-30. This established our wrestling team in Big Lake school athletic history. This was the first victory by a Big Lake team in the three year history of wrestling. Individually we were led by senior Jim Bring, and under- classmen Steve Davis, Russ Bring and Jerome Kollar. Wrestling at Big Lake shall continue to improve with the potential that we discovered in our younger wrestlers such as Andy Pit- tman, Paul Maurstad, Scott Olson, Tim Juhl. Russ Bring was awarded Honorable Mention All-Conference for his fine record of 4-2 this year. (L to R) Row 1 Andy Pit- tman Paul Maurstad Scott Olson. Tim Juhl. BLHS’ FIRST FOREIGN EXCHANGEE KARIN HAGGQVIST It is not very hard to describe a person as warm and friendly as Karin. She was to all of Big Lake a friend and someone to set an example of the American way of life to. Karin always wanted to meet new people and their ways of life; sometimes even conform to that way if she felt it was better than her own. This is, I feel, a rare quality: to accept people as they are rather than what you want them to be like, this year has been a memorable one for not only Karin, but for me, her family, friends, and the Big Lake Community. We all have one thing to say to you, Karin Vi allt Karlek dv or as we know it in English, We Love You . — Dawn Loven Karin's American Sister Above: Karin at home with Dawn 3elow: Karin in her award winning role in Pinned Down Karin: Big Lake's touch of Sweden SNOW DAZE ’80 1980 SNOW DAZE CANDIDATES (Couples top down); Shelly Lem- onds Mark Wold; Sherry Peterson, John Kocisko, Val Hayes, Roger Loegenng, Michelle Keeler. Shelly and Mark were crowned Queen and King to reign over the week's activi- ties. A bus of fans helped the girls to a victory at Maple Lake later that evening. Tuesday (Dress Up Day) sports buttons went on sale. Wednesday (Sweater Day) was highlighted by the Battle of the Classes. Each class chose a team of five to participate in the event. The Battle included a toilet paper wrap, a tricycle race, and a Leap Frog-tiebreaker race between the Jrs. and Srs. in which the Srs. won. The Sr. Slave Auction followed. Thursday (Long John Day) the slaves were seen cleaning cars, peeling carrots, and pulling each other to class in wagons. Friday (Blue and Gold Day) Carnations went on sale to start the day off. The Pepfest led both the fans and the teams to victories for both the Wrestling and Boys Basketball teams. Our charter of Troupe 582 was estab- lished this year, and 12 members were ini- tiated based on past work. Six more mem- bers were added in the spring. Local troupe officers included: President Laura Wool- ston, Vice President Laura Hengemuehle, and Secretary Sharrie Harris. SPEECH This year's speech team although very small was still very active. They partici- pated in many speech invitationals at vari- ous area schools and did very well. Two of the team members traveled to District speech competition. They were Deb Skoog and Dawn Loven. Dawn won at the District level and advanced to Regions and did very well. Everyone is looking forward to next year and more time to speak. 1980 SPEECH TEAM: (Clockwise from Left) Julia Reed, Deb Skoog, Barb Forsythe, Karin Haggqvist, Laura Hengemuehle, Chad Erbe. You Can't Take It With You-our Fall production was a comedy dealing with a mar- riage between the daughter of a very odd family and the son of a very successful busi- nessman. When these two very different families meet among fire works manufacturing, bal- let dancing, snake charming and play writing the results are quite humorous. Our Spring play, The Fabu- lous Fable Factory, was a Children's Musical Theatre. Aesop's Fables came to life through musical entertainment and meaningful morals. The cast took the play on tour to Big Lake, Becker and Monti- cello Elementary Schools. The Hornet team was very strong in the field events and sprints and counted heavily on these people for points. Junior Laurie Peterson led the team in scoring and was unde- feated during the regular outdoor season in shot and discus. She broke her own BLHS Disc Record with a throw of 116 23 4, and was the conference champion in those two events. On the basis of her throws in District 19 competition she went on to Regional competition where she placed 3rd in Disc and 4th in Shot. The 400 M and 800 M relay teams of Kollar, Tummel, Bebo, and Klatt broke their own records three times and just missed the chance to go on to Regionals by .2 of a second! Seventh grader Kiirsten LaBau broke the school record in the 3200 M run the first time on an outdoor track and continued to break it three other times during the season. Pam Stein came back from in- juries to break records in the 100 M and 200 M hur- dles. A strong group of underclassmen who are willing to work makes the future bright for next years track team! The pre- season speculations were that potentially, this would be one of our best track teams ever. The Hornets placed a solid third at the CMC indoor meet and then finished second in several meets just behind region powers Holdingford and Monti. Then a near disaster struck as the tracksters began to get hit by injuries. Senior Captain and four year letterman Brad Thomas pulled a hamstring muscle which was to sideline him for the season. His leadership and great athletic ability was sorely missed during the rest of the season. Numerous other injuries were incurred throughout the season so the Hornets were not able to continue their outstanding showing throughout the middle portion of the season. Regrouping the Hornets went on to win the Becker Invitational Meet for the third year in a row and finished on a strong note. Two new school records were set, both by Tim Kollar in the high hurdles (14.9) and in the Discus (129 6V2 ). Tim Kollar (HH), Jeff Huggett (200 and 100 M Dash) and the 400 M Relay Team of Fischer, Huggett, VanHee and Kollar all advanced to the region 5A Meet. Tim Kollar won the champion- ship in the HH for the 3rd year in a row. He also placed 2nd in that event in the Region 5H finals which meant he became the second BL track athlete in recent years to qualify for the State Track Meet. In the championship heat Tim placed 6th. Congratulations Hornets for an outstanding season! “The only place where success comes before sweat is in the dictionary. Being our first year in competition there were many things that had to be learned. In spite of this, the team made up of a few Jr.'s and Sr.'s but mostly underclassmen, played teams respectably for most of the season. Dana Westrum, who was named to the All Confer- ence team, along with Cindy Wold provided the team with the leadership it needed. With the enthusiasm and youth that makes up this team, softball has a very bright future in Big Lake. Good Luck Girls! Cindy is determined to make this run count. Vicki gracefully pitches the ball. Zfic Class of SO On May 29, 1980 we met in the study hall room to sign caps, pin on yellow roses and to clown around for the last time with our classmates. As the ceremony drew near we were happy, excited and even a little nervous, but the feeling as we walked in was pride. Salutatorian Lonnie Rose and Vale- dictorian Brian Meltzer delivered speeches on friendship and hope in the future. The class was presented and we received our long-awaited diplomas. Our feeling at that time was captured in the picture of Marie Tischbirek, a Special Ed graduate. Graduation ended with the congratulations of Principal Richard Strand and saying goodbye to our classmates and friends. PERSONALIZE YOUR YEARBOOK ...
