LAKER 1979 BIG LAKE HIGH SCHOOL BIG LAKE, MN VOLUME 21 -rr .— When fleeted qreatres 2 Close that door and get back in here! Things go better with Coke Devoting spare time to get ready for class DEDICA TION The 1979 Senior class and Big Lake Annual Staff would like to dedicate our Laker to Mr. Chuck Heitz. Mr. Heitz has taught at Big Lake High School for nine years as our Industrial Arts teacher. Due to his dedication he has opened a new dimension in the minds of many young ambitious students. And for this we will always be grateful. The annual staff would like to take this opportunity to give special thanks to Mr. Heitz for his teaching and involvement in photography. For without this new knowledge many of the pictures in this annual would not have been available. Thanks Mr. Heitz, for EVERYTHING! More than a teacher a Friend 3 IT’S ALL BEHIND ... ... FOR THE CLA SS OF CLASS COLORS: CLASS FLOWERS: Blue and Silver Cream Carnation and Light Green Rose CLASS MOTTO: I am not afraid of tomorrow for I have seen yesterday and I love today. William Allen White CLASS SONG: I GOT A NAME Like the pine trees lining the winding road, I've got a name; I've got a name. Like the singing bird and the croaking toad, I've got a name; I've got a name, And I carry it with me like my daddy did, but I'm living the dream that he kept hid. (Chorus) Movin' me down the hiway Rollin' me down the hiway Movin' ahead so life won't pass me by Like the north wind whistlin' down the sky, I've got a song; I've got a song. Like the whippoorwill and the baby's cry. I've got a song, I've got a song, And I carry it with me and I sing it loud, if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud. (Chorus) (Instrumental) And I'm gonna go there free. Like the fool I am and I'll always be, I've got a dream; I've got a dream. They can change their minds but they can't change me, I've got a dream; I've got a dream. Oh, I know I could share it if you'd want me to, if you're going my way, I'll go with you. Tuesday started with the royalty reigning over the festivities of four student faculty volleyball games in which the men faculty were champs. Also on Tuesday was T-shirt day and a victory by our Hornet volleyball team. Grub day on Wednesday, Wild and Crazy day on Thursday with an exciting hayride at night. Friday led everyone to wear Blue and Gold and attend the pep fest. Then finally the undefeated Hornets won their fifth straight game of the season over St. John's Prep 19- 6. The Hornets missed go- ing to State by one game, but no one would deny our team was great, posting our best record ever, 8-1. The record was good for 2nd place in the GRC and earned a rating of 9th in the State by the AP. The Hornets racked up 7 consecutive victories before suf- fering their lone loss to Sartell. The explosive offense set several school records and several conf. records utilizing the Triple Option attack. Although the rushing game was one of the best in the school's history, it was the pass that provided the greatest threat. QB Bill Miller completed 104 passes (Conf. Rec.) for 1324 yds. and 12 TD's. End Dan Loegering caught 41 of those passes for 638 yds. (Both Conf. Rec.). Wide re- ceivers, Brad Thomas, Roger Loegering and Bill Smith accounted for most of the other receptions. The senior offensive line of Bruce Harris, Randy Zwilling, Brad Berntson, Lee Fischer and Shawn Ko- ester, gave running backs John Koppi and Tom Wilts excellent blocking all season long. The defense recorded an amazing 5 shutouts in 9 games and gave up a stingy total of 40 pts. all season. Smaller than their op- ponents, the Hornets would 'bend, but not break' often coming up with big plays in critical situations to turn the ball over to the of- fense. Few fans will ever forget the 20-13 overtime win at Hold- ingford when the defense stopped the Huskers twice from inside the one foot line to preserve the victory. Linebacker Tom Wilts led the team in tackles for the season and was BL's first player chosen to the WCCO all state team of the week. Miller, Wilts, D. Loegering and Berntson were selected as members of the All Conference Team. Probably the highlight of the season was the Isle game with Big Lake coming within one point of winning; beating Isle in two games and taking the match. Both teams played well offensively and defensively with Shelly Lemonds and Chris Miller doing outstanding jobs for Big Lake. A final highlight of the season was the selection of Chris Miller and Dawn Dries- sen to the All-Conference Team, with hon- orable mention going to Shelly Lemonds for the second time in as many years. BOYS BASKETBALL 'The Big Lake Blitz', 'The Hustlin' Hornets', 'The Mighty Sting' . . . any one of these nicknames accu- rately describe the 1978-79 Hornet Basketball team, but heard most often was 'The Best Team Ever' which it was! Many, many things highlighted the season-a win over Sartell, a record 105-51 win over Onamia, a 9-1 conference record, an 18-3 record overall, and Bill Miller and Mark Oltmanns hitting the 1,000 point mark. All of this made the Hornets winners. They were crowned Conference Champs, District 19-A Runner-up and were rated 8th in the State by the Associated Press. The best way to say congratulations to this team is in the way Larry Larson of the Sherburne County Star put it. 'They had an excellent season . . . one to remember . . . we're going to miss them.' Improvement, confidence and excitement were the by-words that the Hornet Girls Basketball team went by this season. This years team set a 9-12 mark ... a record for wins of any Girls Basketball team at Big Lake. Included in these wins is the Sub-District Cham- pionship. Seeded 5th out of 6 teams the varsity put together their best ball playing and swept thru the tournament by beating «3 seeded Becker 57- 56 in triple overtime and handling Sartell 46-42 to bring home the championship trophy. The 10 girls played with poise and determination . . . with vic- tory coming even sweeter as both Becker and Sar- tell had beaten the Hornets in the regular season. The Hornets were led by 3 time All-Conf. center, Shelly Lemonds who averaged 21 pts. and 18 rebounds a game. The 6'2 Junior highlighted the season by breaking her own school scoring with a 34 pt. outburst against cross-river rival Monticello. Averaging 13 pts. and 9 rebounds a game was the girl known as the best defensive player on the team, Sophomore forward Laurie Peterson, Pete followed Lemonds in most categories and was also given Conference Honorable Mention. Ju- nior guard Ann Stein contributed 3 double-figure games and desire to improve while Val Hayes, also a Junior, had one of the best eyes for free throws. Rounding out the starters was Sophomore guard Dana Westrum who led the team in assists and steals. Again, numbers on the team meant most of the pressure went to the starting five, but with a solid bench of Freshmen coming up and experienced Sophomores and Juniors the Hornets can look for- ward to an even better season. It took the entire year to achieve this goal, finally occur- ring in the finals of the district 19 tournament. This goal was the developing of a team. Big Lake now has a Wrestling team. The combination of ef- fort, hard work and the desire to help other members of the team has made the 1978-79 wrestling season a success. Scores do not always deter- mine the success of a program, although they do indicate when individuals are working as a team. Our dual meet record of 0-5 indicates no success, but the amount of mat points scored indicates hope for the future of wrestling at Big Lake High School. I was always told that there would be days like this. GYMNASTICS The 78-79 Gymnastic season began with much enthusiasm. This year the team had three coaches to help them adding a Jr. High coach. The season record was 5-6 (8-2, B team) with many meets ending very close including a loss to Maple Lake by only .15 of a point. Individual ef- forts for the year, as far as a team, included: Sue Hayes, first in bars and all-around; Michelle Kee- ler, first in floor-ex; and Cindy Wold, first in total team points with 230.35 team points. For the first time in BLHS Gymnastic history, four girls went on to Sectionals by placing in the top 15 on their respective pieces at Sub-sectionals (the most that ever went before was one). Those Gymnasts that competed at Sectionals were: Sue Hayes, bars; Sherry Peterson, bars; Sue Mayer, vault; and Cindy Wold, vault and all-around. Plac- ing highest at Sectionals were Cindy Wold, 14th in all-around and Sue Hayes, 15th on bars. Most of the girls on the varsity and B teams plan to attend lessons this summer. The traditional coronation of our King and Queen was held between the girls' basketball games. King Dan McConnell and Queen Dawn Driessen were crowned that night and the girls added to the festivities by defeat- ing Ogilvie. Tuesday saw many different kinds of groups as it was costume day. Clowns, cowboys and Indians even back to the 50's. Wednesday was a day that could make some go crazy because nothing anyone wore matched, so it was rightly called Clash day. Thursday brought us victory and defeat. The Boys basketball beat Becker but the girls suffered a loss. Sno-Daze ended a little sonner than expected: Because of the weather. Laura Hengemuhle was our make- up artist. Pride, concentration, and hard work took their bows on March 22nd when 'The Uncertain Samaritan' and 'The Tale That Wagged The Dog' were presented to the public. We always knew we had it—now everyone knew that we got what it takes to put out good theatre. Lets not get violent.' DISTRICT 19A ONE-ACT CONTEST WINNERS Row one, Ed King, Drake White, Row two, Laura Woolston, Sue Borst and M Bungert Therefore, I'm going to give you a raise' The scene exploded as Julia slapped Drake 'You don't have to get up on stage-just come to rehearsals and help us.' The next thing our 'behind the scenes' workers knew they were wearing a costume and acting. We took the original cast to the Guthrie to see ‘A Christmas Carol' and our one-act was rewritten into a 60 minute play. Drake White, a Senior, was conned into auditioning for the prt of Scrooge. Three weeks into rehearsal, Drake dis- appeared and Scrooge took over. Lee Fischer, also a Senior, tested his acting skills as Fred, Scrooge's jovial nephew. Outstanding per- formances were given by each cast member. We overcame each ob- stacle we encountered and refused to quit. Although 'A Christmas Carol' was not our most perfect preformance it was our most impor- tant because we learned, we got excited, and this play opened the door to theatre at BLHS. 'Twelve Angry People'-our Grand Finale. Grades 7 through 12 participated. We had a fine representation from the Freshman and Junior classes. Drake White was back for an en- core. The play was challenging to direct since all twelve jurors were on stage for the duration of the play. We learned how diffidult it is to pull a three-act together. It wasn't easy; but the re- warding endeavors in life are seldom easily accom- plished. Drake gets the final line . . 'You don't really mean your going to kill me do you.' GIRL’S TRACK This track season seven school records were broken by the girls track team—Pam Stein in the 110 yard hurdles (17.9); Mary Kollar in the 220 yard dash (28.3); Donna LeVoir in the 440 yard dash (65.0); Jodi Klatt in the 2 mile run (14;20.4); Laurie Peterson in the discus (115'2 ); the 440 relay team of A. Johnson, S. Klatt, L. Kamletz, and M. Kollar (55.6); and the mile relay team of J. Atkinson, W. McConnell, D. LeVoir, and A. Johnson (4:38.9). The girls worked very hard during the season, and it paid off with the girls taking 5th place in the conference. The Eighth grade girls placed 1st at the Jr. High conference meet, (last year as 7th graders they came in 3? 1). Special season efforts went to Laurie Peter- son who had an outstanding year. Laurie was again the conference and district champ in the discus, and took 4th place at Regions. For the last two years, Laurie had taken 1st place in the discus in every meet through and including Dis- trict 19A competition. 51 1979 TRACK Row 1: (L to R) Todd Skinner, Roger Loegermg, Brad Thomas, Dave VanHee, Jeff Huggett, Curt Angell, Randy Gramsey, Tim Taylor Row 2: Jerry Lytle, John Kocisko, Brad Berntson, John Meltzer, Greg Fischer, Dennis Gerke, Tim Kollar, Brian Folkens. BOYS TRACK The 1979 Track Season, although shortened by one of the worst springs in history, proved to be a very exciting and successful one. Bad weather forced area teams to cancel meets until May and then most were held in rain and cold. Despite this handicap some fine accomplishments were achieved. Highlighting the season was the winning of the Becker Invitational for the second year in a row. Several members of the team traveled to Bloomington to attend Trackorama, the world's largest high school track meet. Our 440 Relay team placed 2nd in Class C. Another high point would be the advancing of 4 of our members to the Region 5 Meet. Brad Berntson, Brad Thomas, Tim Kollar and Jeff Huggett, 440 Relay; Kollar in High Hurdles and Thomas in the 220. The 440 Relay team was crowned Conference Champs, as was Tim Kollar in the High Hurdles. Tim won the GRC title, defended this District 19 title and placed 5th at the Region 5 Meet. Numerous other people turned in fine performances: Roger Loeger- ing in the 440 run; Dennis Gerke and Brian Folk- ens in the Pole Vault; and Greg Fischer in the In- termediate Hurdles. With just two Seniors on the squad, Brad Berntson and John Meltzer, next year also promises to be a record breaker for the Hornets. GIRLS SOFTBALL This year marked history at BLHS, the girls were allowed to come out for another spring sport- fast pitch softball. Enough interest was shown, to have a varsity and a junior varsity team. The season was short, meeting only twice a week and competing in only two scrimmages (Elk River and Maple Lake) because of these girl's love for sports-and for soft- ball specifically-the school de- cided to go full force next year with a girls softball program. It may seem like a short, mean- ingless season, but to all future BLHS girl softball players, they will never be able to repay you. Thanks for your desire, time, in- terest, and hard work . . . which all resulted in a new BLHS sport!! The senior class song Tve Got A Name' provided a theme and decorations centered around the class flowers, the cream carnation and the green rose. The menu consisted of chicken, shrimp or steak with potato, corn and salad. After the extraordinary dinner ‘First Flight' filled the room with rhythm for the ears and feet. This year the Juniors found a unique way to dedicate the evening to the Seniors and add to the excitement of every- one's night by electing a Prom Queen-Carol Ross and two attendants-Marcia Panayotoff and Sharia Bauman. Mark Tischbirek 77 GRADUATION 1979-This special day fell on May 31 and went something like this (follow the pictures by starting in the lefthand corner of page 78) . The Seniors met in the study hall first to pin on flow- ers, like Terry and Dan, and to think of what was ahead, like John, Dawn and Brad. When they were ready they all lined up outside the gym and when the Fanfare began, they came in by twos, like Chris and Lee. Speeches looking toward a bright future were given by Valedictorian Chris and Salutatorian Dawn. John, with guitar by Dean and Terry, sang the class song, I've Got A Name . Then came the wait for Mr. Strand to present the class. Like Bill, all the Seniors were happy when they received their diplomas, but like Marcia . . . found it hard to say Good-Bye . 7 80 THA NKS The 1979 Annual Staff would like to thank all of the people who contributed their long, hard hours of work to publish this volume of the LAKER We would like to give special recognition to: Ms. Connie Roberg, for her long hours of ‘page after page after page . . Mr. Floyd Graham, for all of his time and photo- graphic contributions. Mr. Richard Drew, our Herff Jones representative who gave us new and better ideas. The faculty and administration, for their support and cooperation. The Monticello Times, for all of their photographic talent and contributions. And a special thanks to the students of Big Lake High School, who made this book possible. 81 My senior year has meant a lot to me. It has given me the chance to see my old friends and to make some new friends as well. I have also gotten to know and appreci- ate the teachers and other people who work in the school. —Greg Haberman My senior year has been one of the most enjoyable years of my life. I guess the highlight of the year would be my 'se- nior' football season; I couldn't have asked for a better bunch of guys to spend the season with. We couldn't have been hap- pier when we took our 7-0 record to Sar- tell. But our happiness quickly changed to sadness as we lost our first game to the undefeated Sartell team. We had one game left to take out our frustrations on and we did; as we ended the season on a winning note. I will remember these guys and our season always. —Brad Berntson I have gone to school in Big Lake all my life. I started out in Kindergarten and often wondered if I would even make it to my Senior year. The time has come now, I'm a Senior and proud of it. It won't be long until I'll be on my own and making my own decisions. I've en- joyed my 12 years spent at BL. I've had all my friends and good times, but I look forward to the new life and friends ahead of me. — Randy Zwilling tHs tkt 82 As we all turn to different new begin- nings in our life we will all look back at our High School years. We will all re- member the good times and the bad, also the goals we have set and achieved. I am proud to be a graduate of Big Lake, also equally proud and honored that I was a Big Lake athlete. — Bruce Harris
