LAKER 1978 BIG LAKE HIGH SCHOOL BIG LAKE, MINNESOTA VOLUME 20 HORNET POWER ACTION VARIETY ENTHUSIASM SPIRIT DETERMINATION EXPERIENCE SHARING COMPETITION PARTICIPATION ANXIETY SUCCESS EXPECTATION LOYALTY DEDICATION The 1978 Senior class would like to dedi- cate this book to Ms. Connie Roberg for all the help she has given to students throughout the two years she has been at Big Lake High. Ms. Roberg teaches Typing, Business Math, Business Law, Consumer Education and Bookkeeping. In her spare time she works with the annual staff on the yearbook. Ms. Roberg is also involved with other activities within the school. She was very helpful during Sno- Daze week both this year and last, and also is very helpful when we ask for help with other activities. To many of us Ms. Roberg is a friend be- sides a teacher, and is always willing to answer questions, hear complaints or just talk. She is concerned with problems of others and will help them if she can. For all of this we dedicate the 1978 Laker to Ms. Connie Roberg. 3 That ever-present command 'Eyes on your book'. Always time for a smile THE GRADUATING CLASS OF NINETEEN HUNDRED SEVENTY-EIGHT CLASS SONG THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD The long and winding road that leads to your door Will never disappear I've seen that road before It always leads me here Lead me to your door The wild and windy night that the rain washed away Has left a pool of tears crying for the day Why leave me standing here Let me know the way. Many times I've been alone and many times I've cried Anyway you'll never know the many ways I've tried but Still they lead me back to the long winding road You left me standing here a long, long time ago Don't leave me waiting here Da da da da — Lervnon-McCartney Dave Ackerman Terry Anderson Laura Angell CL SS FLOWER Rose CLASS COLORS Light Blue Dark Blue CLASS MOTTO Do not follow where the path leads. The week kicked-off on Monday, September 26, with everybody dressing in their finest—honoring the night's upcoming event Coronation, where Bonnie Nord and Denny Wold were crowned as Queen and King. Tuesday presented .a girls volleyball game with Isle, and something new, a favorite t-shirt day . . . with t-shirts ranging from good old Mickey Mouse to sexy Farrah Fawcett. Traditionally held grub day came on Wednesday, along with another new activity—a Powder-Puff football game . . . the Seniors and Juniors showing their superiority over the Sophomores and Freshmen by beating them 6- 0. A visitor on Thursday may have thought that our school was a little backwards, students either dressed back- wards or wore 'bibs'—an all time favorite! The activity-filled week ended Friday with everybody dressing in the school colors and holding an hour long pepfest to 'psyche-up' the players. The evening concluded with a disappointing loss by the football team—but later everybody proved they could dance their blues away dancing to Sovereign. Although we were defeated the team ended with a great 16-3 record. The Sno-Daze dance, held the following evening, brought relaxation to all (except those who still had energy enough to dance) while enjoying the music of Lazer. The small, but quick Hornets were hampered for 3 straight weeks by rain, snow and mud which mean the fields favored the slower and heavier teams. Even so, the team won the respect of opposing teams, by playing some hard nosed football. The 14-0 win over arch rival Becker could be sited as a seasonal high point. This was the best football team Becker had ever fielded, yet the Hornets outplayed their opponents in every phase of the game. The Hornets finally found a team that was physically their size and soundly defeated a Taylor's Falls team by the score of 20-0. Next years team will see 16 lettermen re- turning and this promises to be one of the best Big Lake teams in recent years. 26 L to R: Srs. It was also a season played with injury. Many matches were within reach and went into the third game, but due in part to lack of experience and teamwork, went to the op- posing team. Our record for the season was 1-13 with 1-6 in conference play. With more ex- perience, teamwork, and a posi- tive attitude the next season could prove to be a successful one. BOYS BASKETBALL Looking back the 1977-78 Hornet Basketball Sea- son was one that will not soon be forgotten. There were numerous high points—including an eight game winning streak, two solid wins over our cross river rival Monticello, our 12 point win over Holdingford, the eventual GRC Champs, and finally the success enjoyed at the District Tourna- ment-including the Sub District Championship. The 16 and 5 win loss record says it all for the team's never-ending determination and spirit. Hats off to one of the best Big Lake teams ever! The Hornets returned only 1 varsity letter-winner from last years squad and lacked depth on the bench throughout the season, often playing with only 7 varsity members. The Hornets were led by 6'0 sophomore Shelly Lemonds who averaged 18 points per game and hauled down 16 rebounds per contest. Laurie Peterson, freshman, followed her in most categories. Lemonds also led the Great River Conference in 3 out of 4 categories (field goal shooting, scoring and rebounding) that earned her All-Confer- ence Honors. Laurie Peterson was given Honorable-Mention. The Hornets won-loss record was not truly indicitive of an over-all poor season. The team won 3 of their last 7 and lost to Holdingford in the first round of districts by 7 points ... a team who had beaten them in the regular season by a total of 31 pts. Highlighting the season was their first win in 9 games over arch-rival Becker in an ac- tion-packed, come from behind effort to win 64-62. Shelly Lemonds set a personal best and school scoring record of 28 points. Other wins were over Royalton and St. John's Prep. Playing with mostly sophomores and freshman and an extra year of experience be- hind them, the Hornet's future looks bright. GYMNASTICS The Girls Gymnastics Team was 4-5 for their 77-78 sea- son, with the team consisting of mainly 7th through 10th grade gymnasts. Big Lake High School placed 5th at sub-sectionals with above average scores on each of the four events. Individual highlights include Sharrie Harris with best vaulting average, Sherry Peterson on the unevens, Me- laney Skoog on the balance beam, Michelle Keeler on floor exercise, and Cindy Wold on all around, leading the team in total points earned. Sue Hayes placed the high- est at sub-sectionals taking 5th on the unevens, missing a chance to go on to sectionals by .5 of a point. The en- tire team will be back next year in full force. The Wrestlers discovered that one mistake makes that person the loser of a match. The Community discovered that American Folk Wrestling is not only different but more exciting than All-Star Wrestling. Wrestling, being a sport in which any size or shape boy can participate, has been a great addition to the Big Lake High School sports program. Thirteen boys started the season and showed a lot of talent. By the end of the season, twenty-three boys were participating and dis- playing their talents of speed, strength and intelligence. The Hornet's participated in 3 scrimmages and 3 dual meets. The Grappler's were defeated in the 3 dual meets as a team, but several individuals made Big Lake known as a strong wrestling team. Led by Captain Jim Driessen the club finished with a 10-5 season record and placed third in the con- ference with a 6-3 mark. The season started with 3 consecutive shut-outs including a no-hit- ter by Mel Enger. There were setbacks along the way such as the losses to Sartell and Pierz, but the Hornets battled back with come from behind wins against Holdingford, Onamia and Royalton. Completing the season with a .318 team batting average, the club carried some im- pressive statistics including: Bill Miller-.413 avg.; 21 runs scored, all-conference; Bill Smith—.390 avg., all-conference; Mel Enger— .364 avg., Mark Wold—.362 avg., 21 rbi's, a grand slam home run, all-conference honorable mention; Dan Loegering- .348 avg., 16 runs scored, 19 rbi's, all conference; Jim Driessen— .340 avg., 17 runs scored. GIRLS TRACK Girls Track consisted of 25 girls in grades 7-12 headed by senior captain Laura Angell. Their sea- son was successful with the Girls taking 6th place in the conference meet. The junior high girls did well at their meets, with the 7th grade taking 1st place for the junior high conference meet. Best individual performances include Laurie Peter- son who set a new conference record on discus, placed 1st on discus at districts, and went on to regions and placed 3rd, missing a chance to go on to state by 6 inches. The team will be losing one senior, with the rest coming back for a promising new season. The team kept Coach Muir busy changing the school records nearly every week and sometimes twice a week. For the first time Big Lake was able to defeat schools such as St. Cloud Cathedral, Albany, Monticello, Sartell, Pierz and others on the oval circuit. The season opened with a promise of things to come as our Hornets took second place at the Great River Conference indoor meet at St. John's, setting a new team scoring record of 79 points. Later the Hornets went on to win the Becker Invitational and scored 89Vi points. The GRC outdoor meet saw Big Lake place 3rd and capture several championships. Dean Oines won the Pole Vault and the Sprint Medley Relay Team of Mark Oltmanns, Brad Thomas, Roger Loegering and Bill Miller set a new school and conference record. Our Mile Relay Team of Loegering, Berntson, Ackerman and Miller also placed 1st and set new school and conference records. At the District 19 Track Meet at Sartell the Hornets proved just how powerful they were by placing second in strong District competition and capturing the Runner-up Trophy. District Champions for Big Lake are Kollar in the High Hurdles and 330 Yard Intermediate Hurdles and the 440 Relay Team of Thomas, Kollar, Oines and Oltmanns. BL sent five squad members to the Region 5 meet at Watertown. The Region participants were Tim Kollar, High Hurdles and 330 Yard In- termediate Hurdles and 440 Relay; Dean Oines 440 Relay and Pole Vault, Mark Oltmanns 440 Relay; Brad Thomas 440 Relay and Bill Miller 440 Dash. By the end of first quarter They've turned into bears You look at your teacher And say, Who cares! To get back for that Because their tempers run short They pile up the work In every length and sort By now it's the end of the first half a year The time when the teachers grin A grin from ear to ear They grin because of the grades They have given That's why the teachers Are in seventh heaven Third quarter's gone by And things are the same But now it's fourth quarter And there is going to be change It's springtime by now And the students are jumpy The weather is nice But the teachers are grumpy The last day of school Is one week away Oh, joy! yell the teachers Oh, come happy day! The last day has ended The students have gone home The teachers have just realized That they're all alone The teachers now wipe Tears of sorrow away They don't have to come back To school the next day The students are their family Their own pride and joy They really do care For each girl and boy The cycle has ended To rest for a while And to start next September With that nice first day smile BLHS FACULTY ...
