e Heartbreak LAKER NINETEEN HUNDRED SEVENTY-THREE The class of 1973 has decided to dedicate the annual this year to a man who has been a teacher at Big Lake for 22 years. Mr. Calvin Hinrichs teaches shop, Jr. High science and Classroom Drivers Train- ing. He is a very dedicated teacher who will help any student who wants help. Mr. Hinrich's wife's name is Dorothy. They have four children, Dick, Gayle, JoAnn and Jana. They also have one granddaughter, Jennifer. Mr. Hinrichs is active in many school activities. He is also the 7th grade class advisor. We chose Mr. Hinrichs for our dedication because of his help in the sets for all the class plays and prom when we used the shop and it's tools. We want to thank him for all his help and kindness in the time we have known him. The Penny Fair that evening was very prosperous and for coronation, Cathy Swanson and Kevin Stein (sen- iors), were our king and queen for 1973. Afterwards everyone went over to the elementary school for our annual bonfire. October 14, was the Fall Frolic dance and everyone en- joyed listening to the band named BIRTH. 10 JUNIOR CLASS PLAY FEUDIN’, FIGHTIN’, FUSSIN’, Zeke Kendall ••••••••••••••• Tom Vigen Betty Su Femheiser......................Ten Blake Mrs. Lucius Q. Our congratulations go to King Rick Larson and Queen Carol Emmel. Wednesday we had a fantastic time with our tug-of-war and football game. But before we could do anything we had to wait awhile for enough to show up. While doing so we kept ourselves busy and warm by jumping rope on the ice rink. Mrs. Duncan, you didn't do bad! Neither did you Harry! The tug-of-war went well, all up to the end when it was between the Juniors and Seniors. Yes, they're just too strong and they broke the rope. It was getting pretty cold so the football game was speeded up by putting Seniors and Freshmen against Sophomores and Juniors. We had great fun and ended up with one small casualty. Jerry got a broken arm! Thursday there was a basketball game between our girls! basketball team and Beck's. There was lots of challenge and great fun. To help everyone in the winning spirit we had an hour long peppy pepfest Friday. This bonsisted of the skit contest, poster contest, cheerleaders, from way back--when was that?, danceline, very encouraging pep talks, This is Your Life, Mr. Muir , and of course our own cheerleaders. Although we lost this game, it was one of Sie best and most exciting games our Big Lake Hornets played. Saturday night brought an end to the Homecoming Events while dancing to the music of Cweynplane. FRONT ROW: D. Raymond, K. Larson, B. Broker, N. Brenteson, B. Mitchell, C. Woolhouse, K. Stein, B. With only one Senior and two Juniors returning no one expected much from them. Although the Hornets remained winless on the year, their quality of play improved tremendously. Led by Sr. captain Kevin Stein, a two time selection to the Great River All Conference team, the Hor- nets were faced with a tough schedule. The con- ference was characterized by many good experi- enced teams. Throughout the season the Hornets steadily improved and always exhibited a tremen- dous quality--they never let down. The Hornets finished their season with a bright note by playing an excellent game against a very strong St. Michael- Albertville team. Although disappointed by not winning any games this season, the twenty return- ing lettermen have a burning desire to change that situation next year, and the year after. STANDING: M. Zwilling, M. Many games during the year were within reach be- cause of good shooting percentage, but lack of height and rebounding ability proved to be our downfall. Al- though the record of 1-18 doesn't look impressive, the team spirit and desire showed through in each game. A- long with the team, the fans and pep band definitely showed their support. As we go into 1973-74, we expect the same spirit along with the experience gained from this past season to turn the record around and make in a winning season. FIRST ROW: O. Nadeau, R. Anderson, M. The Hornets placed second in the locally-sponsored Big Lake Invitational tournament out of the six teams that participated. There are no players graduation, so they can pick up where they left off, becoming a major contender for conference if not state championship. Mr. Muir, D. Baker, L. Gohman, W. Harris, M. Graham, S.
