At the bonfire Vicki Knowlton and Mike Jackson, both seniors, were crowned King and Queen. We had a sing-in with Mike and John. Friday, October 25, was our game with Pierz. Although we lost to the Pioneers (0-28) this didn't diminish the spirits for the dance. Everyone had a good time dancing to the Factory. 18 19 Junior Class Play “Off the Track” CAST MR. The events really got started on Monday this year with a men's faculty game against the faculty of Becker. Our men won. It was a tough game but they pulled through. The royalty was crowned on Thursday and afterwards there was a game between the girl's basketball team and the women faculty. The girls felt sorry for the teachers and almost let them win with a final score of 27-21. To get the teams enthusiasm and winning spirit up we had an hour long pep fest on Friday. This pep fest consisted of: peptalks, fan-in-the-stands, a lot of roof raising cheers, skits by the cheerleaders, a new squad of retired cheerleaders (teachers), and peppy music by the pepband. Because of the beautiful snowfall, the game was postponed until Saturday before the dance. After the victorious game over Sartell (82-67) we all danced to the music of the Pride and Joy, which every one enjoyed. This brought an end to the Homecoming events. Everyone felt that in every way it was a successful event, enjoyed and remem- bered by all. 24 1970 Royalty Marty Moshier G Roxanne Lamont Juniors Dale Hanson G Kay Mitchell Freshmen Sophomores Rob Bollinger G Meri Ann Olson Dan Kingma G Kathy Swanson King Candidates- Dan Moores-Mike Jackson-Mark Jerve-Harlan Rose- Roger Zieman. 25 Queen Candidates-Jean Sands-Diane Nelson-Mary Sue Person-Anita Theo- bald-Karlyn Christenson. 26 Spring Gardens Jr-Sr Prom May 22, 1971 G r a d u a t i 0 n 1 9 7 1 Valedictory Address Welcome BIG LAKE FRONT ROW- Mgr. Maple Lake 52 BL 60, Buffalo 79 Mark Jerve Basketball 1971 The basketball program in BLHS showed quite an improvement in 1971 over 1970. The varsity reversed its 6-12 record in 1970 for a 12-6 regular season mark in 1971. With a 9-3 conference record, tying Royalton for the Great River Conference championship, the 1971 Hornets produced Big Lake's first basketball title in twenty years. After posting a 7-11 mark in 1970 and losing the first two contests of the 1971 season, the B squad reeled off sixteen wins in a row to finish the year. The seventh and eighth graders also showed fine promise this year. With these two young teams and four varsity starters being underclassmen, the Hornets should be respected for the next few years. The 1971 baseball Hornets played a full scheudle of sixteen games and finished up with five wins and eleven losses. In the well balanced Great River Conference, Big Lake won two and lost four to finish in a five-way tie for third place. For the first time, the Hornets participated in the Mound Invitational Tournament and finished fourth, beating Golden Valley and losing to Mound and Hutchinson. The Triple-A and Double-A teams, new this year, will be sending up prospects to the major team in the coming years, giving the younger boys a chance to play and develop into varsity ballplayers.
