Newton The senior class of Big Island High School acknowledges its affection and re- spect to one who has played a long role in the field of education throughout Virginia; one who has shown a deep desire for our learning more than duty demands and whose dedication to his task has been an inspiration to the entire school. We will long associate equations theormes, and chemistry formulas with the kind, friendly, immuculate, thought- ful, and courteous, Mr. Merriet D. Newton. Thank you for coming our way and may your days of relinquished responsibility be many and rewarding for having shared your life with hosts of high school students in Virginia. M ( )a I? (v)jtJi Q s . . . Each morning Big Island High School students are greeted by a building that has been made dear to the entire community by memories. To each pupil and teacher it is a symbol of pleasure, ad- venture, and knowledge. The challenge of each day with its joys and tribulations is met with an- ticipation; as students maybe seen getting last mi- nute assignments done or exchanging pleasantries. ' f cross our Gamp us . . In nine months many activities take place on our campus, down by the historical James River and over- looking a broad sweep of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Balcony Falls. Here events stand out in our journey across the stage of our high school years. No matter what the season the natural beauty is ever enticing as the 8: 50 bell officially opens each new day and the time comes for serious concentration on studies. Come with us up the steps inside this hall of memories to our classrooms. The end of another day for Elsie Whorley, Marion Fitzgerald, and Betty Trevey. Home to eat, watch T.V. and study. Remember when a mountain thaw sent creeks out of bounds, school was dismissed early and the mighty James River looked like this. S7nfo the ( ) ass room . . Settling the economic problems of the world in Mr. Adkins ' Economics class. Within the classrooms of our school is taught more than ' reading, ' riting and ' rithmetic. Those interested in thewhyandhow of life are introduced to the mysteries of the sciences; hear the click, click of typewriters, the hum of sewing machines, or the Latin and French classes con- jugating a verb. All of these are aimed at preparing us for a big-wide-wonderful world. Nancy Blakenship, Sandra Snead, Dana Humphries, San- dra Spence, Helen Peters and Betty Trevey display a project for Mrs. Freeman ' s General Science class. urmcj our Life at Big Island High School is not all rules, book reports, term papers, pop quiz and ball practice. Some of the classroom work is turned into fun, a party now and then, recalling past experiences and planning for ac- tivities when school is over makes every day full of anticipation. Remember trying our acting ability as Shake- spearean players? Mrs. Neal at her surprise birthday party. A bit of fun at the lake will make for good conversa- tion at school next winter. Here a group of Senior girls enjoy a boat ride at Ware ' s Lake. 8 and TJaried dlclivities . . The bi-monthly assemblies bring us together with speakers of varied and different backgrounds who share their knowledge and wisdom with the students. At other times students are featured in the assembly. It may be the pastor next door, a world traveler, an exchange student or a Big Island native back home from Brazil. All of it lends interest and diversity to the assemblies. President Bob Trevey dis- cussing S.C.A. plans with some of his officers. S.C.A. With the cheerleaders shouting out the cheers and the spectators echoing them, the contest becomes keener and keener. The basketball rolls around the rim of the basket undecided; the volleyball hovers at the top of the net; the baseball stuck in mid air. Will there be shouts of joy or cries of dis- may ? All of these moments lend to the excitement of an athletic event here at Big Island High School. Always ready to cheer the team on is the one goal of our cheerleaders. 10 1 1 Delbert Adkins W. Va. They are a study in patience, friend- liness, diligence, perseverance, and understanding. How often they must feel that their efforts are wasted, yet the fruits of their labors will be enjoyed by generations that will follow. Much credit for this should go to the custodians of Big Island High School. Every afternoon these people go to work to bring order out of dis- order created by the daily activities. It is surprising how many errands done through their untiring efforts add to the efficiency of our school. We are truly indebted to our custodians for a fine job well done. Our trusted Jrtends Everyday four buses make eight trips to transport most of the students to Big Island High School. For 180 days these boys rise early in order to get all of the pupils to school on time. Every afternoon they take us home. A great deal of patience is shown as they endure the noise and commotion that all of us make. Without these drivers many of us would be unable to attend school and obtain the education we will cherish.
