I was flying around one day in my 1980 Con- vair convertible over my hometown, Lost Angel, California. As I glided along I decided I would like to see my classmates again, whom I had not seen since I graduated from Big Island High School. I started looking around, hoping any minute to spot one of them. Soon I had to stop for gas, so I alighted in front of a gastorium and shopping center in Sedalia, Missouri. Who should I see but Franklin Reynolds, the owner of this magnificent business named ’’Mitchell’s Market No. 5”. Franklin tells me he is married to the famous movie actress, Elayna Elayne, who left the stage and TV to stay at home with their five sons. Franklin told me that Wray Tomlinson is teaching at Baylor University, Waco, Texas and that Wray married the French actress Christine Carere who visited at VMI during 1958. They have ten little Tomlinsons, all in a row. Frank¬ lin gave me a list of some of the classmates and their addresses, so I could very easily get in touch with them. Following directions, I finally came to a huge sign which read ’’Peaches for Sale”. I knew then I had the place for sure. I went up to this Man¬ sion and knocked on the door, a maid came and invited me in. She told me I could find Wray in the orchard, so I went out in hopes of finding him, but there were so many peach trees it was a very difficult job. After looking for a long time, I finally saw him ’’propped” up against a tree. He was very surprised to see me. He tells me he owns 100 acres of land on which his peaches are grown and are shipped to all parts of the world. After leaving Wray, I found that Opal Goff was next on my list, so I ventured on to see her. I found her in Illinois in the ’’night Club Smith”, which she and her husband, Keith Smith, are the proud owners. When she is not singing, she is busy giving lessons to her triplets. Opal told me that Edna was living in Tennessee, so I bade her a fond adieu and was off once more. As I approached the ’’Rocker and Roller” home of which Edna Coffey is the owner, she came running out to greet me. As we were sitting in her large home drinking tea, she tells me she is teaching ’’dancing” at ’’Coffey Island School”, which 2,000 students attend. Edna also tells me she has an eye cast on a navy man. I cannot look into her future, but whatever her plans are, I wish her much success. I bade Edna farewell and immediately drove on. As I was sitting in the ’’Grill” restaurant in Roanoke, in walked Mary Burks, now Mrs. James Mundy. She and her husband joined me and we talked for quite awhile. She has three girls and one boy, which keep her very busy at home sewing and cooking. She and James still like to go to dances, and when they do, they hire a baby sitter. 14 As I left Roanoke, I thought about another of my classmates, Ronald Day, so I headed for Big Island. When I arrived I found out that Ronnie had moved to Buena Vista. When I arrived at Woody’s Farm in the large city of Buena Vista, I found Ronnie outside playing with his four boys and four girls. He told me he was married to Marjorie Taylor. They own a beautiful farm of approximately 700 acres. On this farm they have riding horses, sheep and other farm animals, too many to name. Time was slipping by so I decided to mosey back to Big Island. I had heard in my travels that Dorothy Seay was teaching school at B.I. so I decided to investigate there. As I arrived the 3:00 bell had just rung, so I went into the office. Dorothy was in the hall and when she saw me, she came to greet me, so we went in her room to have a talk. First of all she told me she was the Commercial Teacher here at ’’Bug Island Hoop School!” I ask her why the name had been changed and she informed me that their new Principal whose name was Mr. W. P. Oglesby, thought that since there were so many ’’Hula Hoops” now in conscientious that they thought this name would be appropriate. Dot also tells me that she is married to Ronald Ross, who is owner of the ’’Ross Lumber Company,” while she teaches school, Ronnie doesn't get lonesome because they have five strong and healthy boys to help him with his work. Dorothy tells me that Earl Cheatham is married to Deloris Coles and they are living in Alaska. There he holds a job as a refrigerator salesman. They now have three girls and are happily married. Dot also informed me that Gladys Tomlin, now Mrs. Frank Parrott, is living in Miami, Florida. They live in a magnificent ’’Cage” and have seven little parrotts. Frank has retired from the Air Force, so he stays home and keeps the parrotts while Gladys directs her ’’Million Dollar Tourist Information Bureau.” Dorothy and I separated after a long talk, hoping to see each other again soon. She flew her helicopter up to the Saw Mill and I headed back to California. I have accounted for all of my classmates, so now, last but not least I shall account for myself, I am Shirley Turpin. I am still Miss Turpin, better known as ’’Miss Shirley” in the designing and dress business where I model sports clothes made in Virginia just for people in California. We hope that it is a “commencement” of greater things to come. In America we enjoy the world’s highest standard of living. If we are to continue to enjoy these benefits, we must have better trained men and women. We need more scientists; more trained engineers; and better qualified people in all walks of life. It’s your future — use it wisely. THE 1959 ISLANDER STAFF WISHES TO EXPRESS THEIR APPRECIATION TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE MADE THE PUBLISHING OF THIS BOOK POSSIBLE AUTOGRAPHS
