The Editor’s Corner Editor Barbara Blaney and Assistant Editor Harold Jensen. As the ear comes to a close and everyone goes his separate way, we wish to express our heart-felt thanks to those who have helped us. This includes many people, who have given us financial help, as well their valuable time. To show our appreciation to these people, the editors would like to dedicate the 1970 RAM to the people of Big Horn. For the people of Big Horn are the ones who have given us all our help. Without them, we could not continue to have a yearbook or many other school activities. This is our way of thanking them for their support of our school and especially of the RAM. To reflect our appreciation, we have used pictures from the Big Horn and Story area for our division pages and end sheets. 5 In Memoriam Jack Alan Dow 1951-1970 A TRIBUTE by Warren W. DeJarnett Jack gave much to his classmates: leader- ship by example, loyalty to his teachers and to his school, honesty, dependability and persever- ance in his studies and an inherent competitive spirit. He loved athletics and his quiet unas- suming manner, always giving his very best, was of great encouragement to his teammates. He gave no quarter and expected none in return, but was first to demonstrate true sportsmanship by reaching a hand to a fallen opponent or administering a pat on the back to the penalized or injured. He was an inspira- tion not only to his teammates but to the younger children in the school who would often exclaim, I want to be a ball player like Jack Dow. Jack gave to his teachers and coaches the great satisfaction of knowing true response to their instruction. For twelve years in the pub- lic schools, he averaged an A in the class- room and graduated with the highest honors in his class. He was a member of the National Honor Society and received the University of Wyoming scholarship. The school pattern appeared to be so firmly established that suc- cess in college and a subsequent professional career seemed assured. Jack gave much to his parents and rela- tives. He was obedient, responsive and anxious to please whether it be driving a tractor, working with livestock, attending school or club meetings, or participating in the tradi- tional family athletics. He was proud of his local pioneer heritage and was pleased when those discussions related to his family. While Jack lived only 19 years, he gave a measure of excellence that is seldom sur- passed. While his passing is untimely and seems almost too much to bear, his life will be an example for many to follow and will seem not to have been in vain. Under the direction of their new teacher Mrs. Rutz, the chorus gave their first performance for Veteran's Day. The chorus met every Monday and Wednesday and seemed to be always practicing for something—if not the Woman's Club, then definitely for the Christmas Program. In the Spring there were many hours spent preparing for the District Music Festival held in Casper. Approximately 20 girls went and spent a busy but educational day at Kelly Walsh High School. The chorus received a two rating. This was Big Horn's first trip of this kind. After returning from Casper, the chorus began to get ready for the Spring Program, a crowning achievement for a year of hard work. The final performance of the year was graduation. Exciting Year The Folk Group was orig- inally a class of students inter- ested in playing the guitar. With only five members, it was easy for students to begin to play different parts. Their first per- formance was at the Christmas Program. Later they appeared in Kiwanis Stars of Tomorrow Contest. Although they didn't place, they had a good time. They also provided entertain- ment for the Senior Tea and Prom Banquet. Their last per- formance was at the Spring Program. They worked hard all year and put in many long hours with Mrs. Rutz. Above: Folk group members. Standing: Wayne Daly, Deb- ra Clements, Irv Blaney. Seated: Robin Benson and Kay Clements. Right: Folk Group during a performance at the Woman’s Club. Be- low: Sextet members at the Spring Program: Suzanne Alderson, Laura Connell, Barbara Blaney, Valene Jensen, Debbie Oedekoven and Maureen Harvey. The Sextet was comprised of six girls from the Chorus. The group was organized in the spring by Mrs. Rutz. The girls met during lunch to prac- tice. Their first performance was for the Senior Tea held at the Woman's Club. They, with the Folk Group, sang for the banquet at Prom. They also sang at the Spring Concert. Their final performance was at Baccalaureate. Scouts Serve Community Scouts and leaders of Troop 118 at a Court of Honor. Bo Scout Troop 118 of Big Horn grew this year from a membership of 3 to 12 under the leadership of John Clendenen and Keith Salisbury. Highlight of the 1969 sum- mer was a pack trip to Lake Geneva. The troop attended winter camp at Bear Lodge and came away with the trophy. A blue ribbon was also earned at the boy's Scout-O-Rama booth. Another pack trip and a week at Camp Buffalo Bill are planned for summer 1970. An anti-litter campaign was a service project of both Big Horn Cubs and Scouts. Cubs painted and placed litter barrels, and Scouts collected trash from local roadsides. Cub Scouts Shawn Jensen, Brian MacCarty, Sandy Joseph, Brian Talcott and Andy Stroup work in their blue ribbon booth at Scout-O-Rama. Cub Scout service projects included the painting and locating of litter barrels and a trash pick-up, as well as the sending of cookies to Viet Nam at Christmas. Picnics a Mother's Day tea and program, and attendance at the Scout-O-Rama were other activities. The prom and banquet were held at the historic Sheridan Inn in Sher- idan. With the help of the inn's staff, Mrs. Greenfield and her juniors were able to make the annual affair one to be remembered by everyone who attended. The banquet was served in the Wyoming Room. The theme was carried out with favors of tiny wishing wells. Entertainment was by the Folk Group and the Girls' Sextet. While everyone went to change for the dance, the Wyoming Room was enlarged and became an enchanted ballroom, complete with a fountain. Music was by the Don Hargis orchestra. The after-prom party was held at Kay Clement's house, and breakfast was served in Sheridan at the Elks. 31 Girls and Bovs State Candidates for 1970 Girls State were Laura Connell and Kay Clements. Superintendent Superintendent's Message 1970 may never be marked as a great year in the history of Big Horn School, but this book will be treasured by those who own it, and its value will grow with the years. For within these covers lay memories that can never be relived. They may range from a first grade smile to a very successful senior sneak day, but the magic of the moment is gone forever and will never be recaptured. Time will go on and Big Horn School will be here. Things will not be the same, because as times change so do people and schools. That is as it should be. But those of you who are in this book will always have a reminder of how it was when you were here in 1970, and as the years go by the memories herein will be cherished. Superintendent Farren B.
