Students from a- cross the state vied for top honors in 12 different writing categories of which Bexley won 2 firsts. Kevin Kaufman and Marian Kennedy, juniors, won first place trophies and keys for articles concerning particular topics. Lauri Podell, senior, and Wendy Mickler and Pam Whitman, soph- omores received third place keys for articles in their divisions. The major types of writing contests, “happenings” and “tours” took place on November 7. A writer who attends a hap- pening knows nothing about the subject of it until he walks in the door. He must then write an article on the “happenings” which he has just observed. Unlike writers on “happen- ings,” writers on “tours” may choose to tour one of four points of interest on the OSU campus, knowing what they are going to tour before the convention. They must then write an article about what they have seen. Point Hours Class Ranks Announced Class ranks for seniors were announced early this month. The point averages are accumulative for six semesters of high school. Leading this year’s senior class of 194 students is Kevin Phelan with a 4.0 accumulative average. SIX SENIORS ELIGIBLE FOR NMS FINALIST Six Bexley High School sen- iors have been notified of their selection as semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Qual- ifying Test which they took last February. Gretchen Gray, Betty Hersch, David Lambert, Paul Liefield, and Kevin Phelan were recognized as semi-finalists at an assembly held for seniors earlier this year. Also recog- nized as a semi-finalist was Mike Ingles who is a transfer student to BHS this year. The National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is one of the most challenging academic competi- tions offered to the students of Bexley High School. According to Mrs. Helen Scott, Guidance Coun- selor, the test is intended to measure the educational develop- ment in each of these areas. The results of these prelimi- nary tests are returned to the students in the spring of their junior year. In the fall of their senior year those students who qualify as semi-finalists are not- ified. These semifinalists consist of less than 1% of the graduating secondary school seniors in the United States. Every finalist receives a Cer- tificate of Merit. Eachone is then considered for a National Merit scholarship of $1,000. 109 Jkjmmmmmmmi Section Editors: Standing: Ed Hart, Dick Bringardner, Paul Zietlow, Bobby Zucker- man, Steve Mueller, Dan Bringardner.
