To Carlton H. Smith, one of Bexley High students’ favorite teachers, who has consistently challenged his pupils to do their best in the courses he has taught and in the sports he has coached, we dedicate the 1969 BEXLEO. Coach Smith has done much for Bexley High School and its students since he began teaching in 1 922. He has coached Bexley teams as long as the school has been in existence. Over the years he has coached football, basketball, tennis, baseball, track, and golf, and he has also served as athletic coordinator. Coach Smith has taught chemistry, modern science, health, physical education, and agriculture to Bexley students. In his spare time Coach Smith enjoys gardening, golfing, and fishing. He likes photography and is a world traveler, having worked his way to Europe as a waiter on an ocean liner. Coach has spent his summers counseling boys at Camp Wigwaseti on Lake Ontario. Coach Smith is known for such colorful phrases as You know as much about sulfur as a hog does about Sunday and you don't have to be a Philadelphia lawyer. His humorous expressions, corny jokes, and amusing names for students have enlivened his classes over the years. It is in gratitude for this impressive record of service to students, both as a teacher and as a coach, that the Class of 1 969 dedicates this book to Carlton H. Smith. DEDICATION 9
