1969 BEXLEO Volume 33 Published by the Senior Class Bexley, Ohio “Viewpoint depends on where you stand. The basis of a man's judgment is the by-product of his experience; perspective changes constantly with the passing of time and the growth of wisdom.’’ Anonymous 2 Table Of Contents Dedication 9 Faculty 10 Classes 26 Athletics 82 Social 100 Activities 108 Advertisements 132 Index 157 To Carlton H. Smith, one of Bexley High students’ favorite teachers, who has consistently challenged his pupils to do their best in the courses he has taught and in the sports he has coached, we dedicate the 1969 BEXLEO. Coach Smith has done much for Bexley High School and its students since he began teaching in 1 922. He has coached Bexley teams as long as the school has been in existence. Over the years he has coached football, basketball, tennis, baseball, track, and golf, and he has also served as athletic coordinator. Coach Smith has taught chemistry, modern science, health, physical education, and agriculture to Bexley students. In his spare time Coach Smith enjoys gardening, golfing, and fishing. He likes photography and is a world traveler, having worked his way to Europe as a waiter on an ocean liner. Coach has spent his summers counseling boys at Camp Wigwaseti on Lake Ontario. Coach Smith is known for such colorful phrases as You know as much about sulfur as a hog does about Sunday and you don't have to be a Philadelphia lawyer. His humorous expressions, corny jokes, and amusing names for students have enlivened his classes over the years. It is in gratitude for this impressive record of service to students, both as a teacher and as a coach, that the Class of 1 969 dedicates this book to Carlton H. Smith. DEDICATION 9 gpw? i i- mymm «Ni « i«® gg SM ! mm pmmM ■MSg iiwM te mmmWM wmmm MHMM W0® - Mm i mB The Faculty Observes andi Dr. William J. Gregg, Superintendent Dear Students, Consider, if you will, the lot of the poor carpet beetle, who spends his total lifetime in the limited confines of a dark and dismal world. Contrast him, then, with the free and soaring eagle, who views with majesty the pan- orama of a constantly changing landscape beneath his widespread wings. For the class that has chosen “Perspectives” as its yearbook theme, it will be easy to see the meaning of the two illustrations above. As freshman students, you appeared on the scene with a somewhat limited view of the future. Now as graduating seniors you have exper- ienced the joy of seeing your perspectives expand to in- clude the wider world beyond. As you prepare to leave Bexley High School for the new life ahead, it is our sincere hope that you may now and again be reminded of this book’s theme. In these confused and rapidly changing times, the world of to- morrow may offer sorrow and despair for those of small vision and narrow perspective. But for those who would constantly seek to expand their horizons, from the “bug’s eye view” to the “bird’s eye view,” the future will offer unlimited opportunity and challenge. With faith in your ability to meet these great new challenges, I offer you my warmest regards and very best wishes for continued success. Sincerely, William J. Gregg Superintendent Board of Education: Donald H. Elsass; Mrs. Donald R. Williamson; William B. Hoyer, president; Dr. John F. Lewis; Wil- liam Young. Participates in Bexley Activities Mr. C. W. Jones, principal Mr. James Ferns, assistant principal Everyone views Bexley in a different perspective. The ten teachers new to Bexley saw our school for the first time. Per- haps they noticed the competitive spirit of the Bexley stu- dents. In addition, they may have participated in our exten- sive extracurricular activities by performing in the Band Parents Show, coaching and assisting with sports events, and chaperoning our dances. Even the teachers who had been at Bexley previously noticed a change in our student body. They saw our undaunted spirit and our perseverance in all events. Certainly every faculty member heard the ex- cited chatter and shouted greetings that punctuated the time between classes. The teachers’ observations and partic- ipation in our many activities helped make the past year an enjoyable one. I 9C m w New Perspectives Open Up for Seniors Looking into the past, seniors could see signs of triumph and tragedy that marked their four years at Bexley High School. Although “An Award Winning Film” did not take the top honors in the float competition, “Gone with the Wind” proved to be one of the most imagi- native and successful proms held at Bexley. Freshman foul-ups, sophomore stubbornness, junior college boards, and finally “senioritis” took their toll and became memories. In athletics, the Senior Class had some of the most outstanding sportsmen in Bexley history. Members of the Class of 1969 participated in winning seasons in all varsity sports. Girls’ sports were also exceptional; the girls’ hockey team won Hockey Night three years in a row and varsity basketball had excellent records of competition. The Senior Class had no lack of scholars. There were three National Merit Semi- Finalists. Senior members contributed substantially to the Bexley team’s success on the “In the Know” program. Several seniors took part in journalistic competition and others made excellent scores on the Mathematics As- sociation of America test. Several members of the class won college scholarships. Bexley sen- iors also participated in such programs as the “Conference on the Atom” and Buckeye Boys’ and Girls’ States. As they looked to the future, a whole new world opened up for the graduated Class of 1969. Many went into college, while others en- tered training for their careers. The Class of 1969 will probably always remember their four years at Bexley, and it is not likely that Bexley High School will soon forget its “Class of ’69.” WILLIAM MORGAN ALBERSHARDT Student Health Council 1, 2, 3; Latin Club 2; Dramatics Club 2, 4; Band 1, 2; Sound of Music; Oklahoma!; Our Town. Anne and her adopted sister Ann enjoy helping out at home. Anne poses with her American family. This year the students of Bexley greeted a lovely, blue-eyed Nor- wegian girl named Anne Karin Berggrav. She came to the United States through the A.F.S. program because she is interested in peo- ple. Anne found that schools all around the world are basically the same. At Bexley she took fewer courses than she would have taken at her other school in Oslo, but her class periods were shorter in Nor- way. Anne’s favorite course was English taught by Mrs. Lighttiser. Anne lived with her American family, Mr. and Mrs. Pobereskin and Ann, who helped her to adapt easily to her new home and school. Because this year was a memorable experience for Anne, she hopes to come back to America soon. Bexley students will be looking forward to her return. Juniors Prepare for Final Year As upperclassmen, the juniors adjusted quickly to their new position and asserted their leadership by being represented on the fighting varsity, on intramural teams, in clubs, and in committee offices. Both the excitement and hard work of college seemed to loom nearer as they confronted interviews and college boards. The victories of the float, “Breakfast of Champions,” and Hockey Night were the re- sult of teamwork and active spirit. The Christ- mas hall decorations showed the careful plan- ning and creativity characteristic of the jun- iors. Work toward the prom began early in the year with the selling of Bexley High notebooks, concessions, and baked goods. Later juniors traipsed around the neighborhood delivering Halloween candy. Ideas for theme and decora- tions, despite a variety of opinions, were finally organized and after much hard work were the basis of a very successful prom. M emories of the challenges and achieve- ments of the Class of 1970 made their junior year very rewarding and their approaching senior year promising. Sophs Work Toward Upperclass Status As the Sophomore Class adjusted to the sec- ond year of high school, they saw a different perspective than they had seen as freshmen. Most knew the difference between room 130A and B, the up and down staircases, and Larry and Perry Smith. The majority could actually recite the study hall rules and their own locker numbers. They enjoyed more power in extra- curricular activities and displayed talent they had acquired throughout their school years in choir, art, dramatics, band and other fields. The sophomores successfully met the challenge of the required courses in health and driver education. Influenced to some extent by the re- quired class reading of Silas Marner and by the class advisor, Mrs. Pfaff, president Don Dick organized several money-raising projects. Showing creativity and teamwork, the sopho- mores built the float, “Mid-Eighth in the Side Pocket.” Members of the class were kept busy by selling concessions at wrestling meets, home-baked goodies at bake sales, and tickets for the movie they sponsored during semester break. Their participation in social and athlet- ic activities, as well as their application to their subjects, proved to be the initiative which start- ed the Class of 1971 toward a successful future as upperclassmen. £4 Jeff Abbott Doug Agler Mark Albershardt Cindy Aldrich Bob Altmaier Gretchen Altmaier Debbie Angel 1 Sherry Asbury Mary Avren Karen Barr Gail Barrett Jackie Bauer Marian Bigelow Gigi Bliss 68 Phil Bohn David Bolt Pat Bowen Nan Boyer Lucinda Bradford Dan Bringardner Dick Bringardner Mike Broidy Laura Brubaker Dan Buhrmastei Karl Burgess Sharon Butz John Cannon Joanne Carr Lynn Carroll Dianne Case Bill Clark Cathy Cleary Jeff Cline Pam Colmery Mary Connor Marsha Correll Connie Crist Judy Crow Dianna Daniel Chuck Dart Paul Dauer Cathy Day is Cliff Davis Kathy Davis Lisa Deinhardt Dave Dick Donald Dick Diana Divine Rick Duckworth Sophomore Class Officers: Jeff Cline, vice-pres.; Dan Buhrmaster, treas.; Donald Dick, pres.; Martha Williamson, sec. After an hour and a half of briefing, they were turned out, excited, fearful, and full of antici- pation, into a world of upperclassmen. Confu- sion reigned, with students trying to read schedules and find rooms. These experiences provided the perspective with which the fresh- men viewed the school year. The newcomers soon learned that the upper- classmen were not as terrible as they had ex- pected and that there was some semblance of order in the arrangement of rooms. The fresh- men then took on money-making tasks such as bake sales and Christmas candy sales. In order to increase academic production, they learned “how to study.” By the end of the year, the Class of'72 had become an active part of life at Bexley High School. Bexley Places 4th in Mid-8 This year marked Bexley’s debut into the reorganized Mid-8 League and resulted in a composite record for the 1968 season of three wins and six losses. The games in which Bexley was victorious were impressive as well as exciting. The first win came against Mifflin. The 19-0 shutout was a re- sult of the invincible defense which held Mif- flin’s offense to only seven yards rushing. The second victory was against rival Grandview. The first twenty-four minutes were scoreless, but the Lions came back the second half with a shotgun offense and defeated Grandview 13-0. Bexley also beat Marysville 44-20. The highlights of the game were Bruce Legg’s two fantastic touch- downs. The first was an intercepted pass which he ran back 80 yards, and the second was a 79 yard kickoff return. The defense was led by two able juniors, Dan Sifferlin and Larry Lieberman. In addition to being elected to the All Mid-8 Team, Sifferlin was awarded the Fred Medors Award and in- ducted into the Shoulder Pad Club. Lieberman was Bexley’s second contribution to the Mid-8 Team. He and Mark Orr were also inducted into the Shoulder Pad Club. Captain Ralph Pariser confers with Head Coach Jim Click. Millard Posts His Best Coaching Record The 1969 edition of the Bexley Lions basket- ball team completed the most successful season in the past decade, placing third in the tough Mid-8 League. The only factor separating the Lions from a championship team was their lack of height. In spite of this handicap, however, the team hustled their way to a 12-6 regular season and a successful tournament record. Captain Steve Callif and senior Scott Weak- ley were outstanding players for the season. Weakley led the Mid-8 and the county in scor- ing, and Callif ranked fourth in the league and the county. The Dynamic Duo,” as the news- papers usually referred to them, had averages of twenty-six and twenty-four points. Both were elected to the first team of the Mid-8. 89 The “Dynamic Duo” becomes the “Terrific Trio.” STEVE CALLI F Senior Forward First Team, Mid-8 BIFF FARLEY Senior Guard SCOTT WEAKLEY Senior Forward First Team, Mid-8 I MIKE BAUMGARDNER Senior Center BRUCE LEGG Senior Guard Bexley 73 Bexley 76 Bexley 59 Bexley 76 Bexley 76 Bexley 61 Bexley 75 Bexley 69 Bexley 75 Bexley 67 Bexley 58 Bexley 59 Bexley 55 Bexley 78 Bexley 65 Bexley 77 Bexley 73 Bexley 56 Ritter tips to Lochncrt. 90 DAVID KEARNS Junior Guard TYLER LOEHNERT Junior Guard RANDY RITTER Junior Center Reynoldsburg 59 Whitehall 68 London 60 Groveport 78 Greenfield 56 Hilliard 54 Marysville 61 Grandview 64 Mifflin 44 Grove City London 60 69 Groveport Hilliard 55 59 Marysville 47 Grandview 62 Mifflin 52 - Gahanna 86 Grove City 68 Eegg goes up for two. 91 Call if drives around Weakley’s pick. Excluding the tie, the Grap- plers were undefeated with a 9-0 record, outscoring their opponents 302-95 in dual meet competition. This season was one of pins. Between the two captains, Bexley won ten pins: Hirsh had six and Lieberman had four. Ron Gates also earned four. The fastest pin of the season came at the Mid-Eight Championship meet when Bruce Hanners hailed his opponent in twenty-six seconds. During the season Bexley took several other hon- ors. They were co-champions in the Groveport In- vitational. For the first time in Bexley history, the team won a league championship. Bexley Homecomim Homecoming Court: Kathy Baumann, Kathy Boesel, Linda Stern, Lisa Margulies, Mindy Klie Queen Linda reigns over Homecoming. Although Bexley was not victorious at the Homecoming game, spirits soared at the dance which was held in the high school gym from 10:00 p.m. till 12:30 a.m. Queen Linda and her court, which consisted of Mindy Klie, Lisa Margulies, Kathy Boesel, and Kathy Bau- mann, were honored at the festivities. Again this year, the music, provided by Marvin Reed and the Playboys, was very soulful. The atmo- sphere was one of informality, as indicated by Marvin Reed’s acting as punch server during a break. The theme-motif was carried out by the life-like Playboy Bunnies which decorated the walls. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all those in attendance, and will certainly be re- garded by Bexley students as one of the high spots on the ’68-’69 social calendar. Students proved themselves as able to enjoy social events as they were able to survive the homework assignments, term pa- pers, and tests of determined teachers. Socializing added another dimension to daily student life, beginning in the morning when students met at their lockers to exchange news while ostensibly gathering up their books for the morning’s classes, and extending to the noon hour when the student lounge was crowd- ed with chattering Bexley students and the roads were filled by the B.B.F.-for- lunch-bunch. The day ended in the afternoon as girls and boys trudged home with their books, or hurried off to their extracurricular ac- tivities. Then, of course, there were the weekends, when loyal Lion fans congregated at the school to cheer the team on to another victory, or couples came to dance to a “soul” beat, or drama and music fans jammed the auditorium to see an excellent play put on by Bexley’s Thespians or hear an enjoyable concert per- formed by Bexley’s talented choir or band members. All of the many activities found at Bexley provided the students with an eventful social life. 104 Bexley students admire Lion trophies. Bexley girls keep lions” busy. School spirit was the first major problem. To in- crease spirit at games, council members de- cided to continue the boys’ cheering sec- tion. Homecoming was the next major issue with which the council dealt. Float building, the election of the queen, the pep rally, the parade, and the dance were all su- pervised by council members. Soon after Homecoming, Steve Call if resigned as president and Ralph Pariser took over. For the Student Council Christmas project rep- resentatives collected money for Franklin illage, a home for children. Also, throughout the holiday season the council was busy with plans for the annual New Year's Eve Dance held at Jeffrey Mansion. To increase basketball season spirit, the Student Council sold bumper stickers ad- vertising “Bexley Lion Power. This year the “In the Know” team was selected from tryouts open to all four classes. After several eliminating matches John Laird, Martin Flicker, Gary Schottenstein, Amy Segal, and Carol Friedman as alternate were chosen by Mr. Peters, the advi- sor, and several other faculty members. The newly-formed Human Rela- tions Club, under the advisorship of Mr. Ferns, assistant principal, proved to be a very popular innovation in Bex- ley extra-curricular activities. The meetings, which were open to all Bexley students, were well- attended. The first speaker, Dr. Clay- ton Robert, a professor at Ohio State University, spoke on the Viet Nam War. Another professor from the O.S.U. law school, Peter Simmons, came to speak on Black Power and the problems of black students. Plans were made to expand the program of this new club next year. Ex Libris Explores Interests Through Books The newly established Ex Libris Club, under the' guid- ance of Mrs. Dickman, the high school’s librarian, was or- ganized with enthusiasm and grew in membership during the year. The club’s goal was to show that all types of inter- ests can be reached through reading books. Under the leadership of president Val Eisenstot, the Ex Libris’s activities included listening to a talk by Mrs. Rog- ers from the Bexley Public Library and having group dis- cussions comparing Romeo and Juliet and Camelot with their respective movies. The girls “visited” Norway as Anne Berggrav, our AFS student told of her native country at “Around the World in 80 Dishes” where they also sampled foods from all over the world. During the first weekend in November, five Y-Teens traveled to several Southern Ohio colleges on an informative and enjoyable tour spon- sored by the YWCA. Service projects included selling bal- loons for the Heart Fund, collecting for the Easter Seal Campaign, and volunteering to work in rest homes and hospitals through the Links Program. To raise money, Y-Teens sponsored the Sadie Hawkins dance. The year ended with an overnight and the traditional Mother- Daughter Tea at which the new officers were announced. 112 This year as in past years Hi-Y had an extremely successful pro- gram. President Ken Leggette, along with the other officers, led the boys through many interesting activities. As always, Bexley’s Hi-Y basket- ball team was first rate. They par- ticipated prominently in the Co- lumbus Hi-Y League, and ended the season undefeated with a 5-0 record. Not only did the boys take part in the Hi-Y athletic program of- fered in the city, but they also inter- ested themselves in “City Govern- ment Day.” On that day several members went down to City Hall, where they joined in group discus- sions led by the heads of Columbus’ city government. Guided by their president, John Campbell, they participated in an exciting year of activities. Their yearly program had much versatility. During the beginning months of the school year, the club sold Spanish grammar sheets for a dollar a piece to students taking that subject. Their newly- earned funds made it possible for the Bexley Span- ish Club to join with Eastmoor’s organization for a Christmas celebration, Spanish-style. The students ate genuine Spanish foods and enjoyed their festivi- ties to the fullest by breaking open the customary pinata. At regular meetings the club hosted guest speakers on such topics as “Job Interviews” and Retail Merchandising.” Other proj- ects included corresponding with soldiers in Viet Nam and making Easter coloring books for the children in Children’s Hospital. FBLA also sponsored a typing and spelling contest and awarded the winner at the Awards Assembly. Band Builds New Image Under the competent guidance of this year’s new director, Mr. Michael Jenks, the Bexley High School Band saw a year of innovations. There was an obvious improvement in audience atti- tude, which helped to increase the spir- it of the more than fifty band members. Band enthusiasm was evident in their excellent performances through the course of the year. The musically- minded students not only formed the marching band for football season, but also organized a pep band for the bas- ketball season, a stage band for enter- tainment, and a pit band which played for the spring musical. As in past years, the orchestra presented both Christmas and spring concerts and also performed at the Festival of the Arts, Baccalaure- ate, and graduation. For the first time, Bexley High School’s band was judged in concert and received a high rating. Some highlights of the group’s extra activities, other than performances, were the Homecoming float with its theme ’‘Bexley Band Aids a Victory,” a fall hayride, the senior band trip, and the annual awards banquet. The girls learned pom-pon routines, chants, and new cheers. Because of their spirit and ability, the girls received one first place award, one second place award, three third place awards, and the spirit stick. Reserve cheerleaders were chosen this year and headed by Angela Tsitouris, alter- nate varsity cheerleader. These girls were picked according to their ability, spirit, and personality by Miss Basnett, Mrs. Blakie, and representatives of the varsity cheerleaders. LAMPLIGHT Advises, Think, Write, and Be Creative. Amy reads a student entry. The Bexley literary magazine, the Lamplight, was very successful under the co-editorship of Eric Goulder and Gail Kaltenecker and the guidance of their advisor, Mrs. Mara Stark. As a literary magazine, the Lamplight enabled stu- dents to get their creative writing, such as poems, short stories, and essays, in print. To pro- mote more enthusiasm in Bexley High School’s prospective writers, the Lamplight sponsored a writing contest offering a prize of five dollars for the best piece of creative writing submitted for publication. The magazine was published in the spring and was sold to many interested students. 127 Gail and Eric proofread the LAMPLIGH T. Bexley’s newspaper carried on its tradition by winning the All-American rating for the seventeenth consecutive time. Under the new advisorship of Mrs. Sally Cohen, the TORCH completed a successful subscription campaign in No- vember and continued producing award- winning editions. Two TORCH members, Libby Davis and Pat Whitman, won first place and sec- ond place, respectively, for their stories at the Journalism Association of Ohio Schools conference, which is held annually at Ohio State University. BEXLEO Views High School Through New Perspectives Through its theme of perspectives, the 1969 yearbook looked at Bexley High from a new viewpoint. The theme was carried out by headlines, copy, and pictures shot from various camera angles. These pictures explored the changes in attitude a student goes through from his freshman to his sen- ior year. Under the guidance of Mrs. Hartranft, the staff included several new features in this year’s BEXLEO. Individual pictures of underclassmen were put in for the first time. There were also more color pictures than ever before in this year’s book. The greatly expanded junior staff completed most of the summer supplement, which in- cluded the spring activities. Co-editors Laurie Schroeder and Laura Nicholl attended a special workshop for yearbook staffs at Kent State University during the summer which helped them in the publication of the 1969 BEXLEO. Many members of both the junior and sen- ior staffs also attended a workshop which was designed to teach them the many as- pects of putting a yearbook together.
