“Sounds must seem on echo to the senses.’’ Alexander Pope I . ?? gSnfi 'fV , U(Tj. 1 r ■ M®§ m .. FACULTY o 7 Board of Education: Donald H. Elsass; Mrs. Donald R. Williamson; Dr. John F. Lewis; John D. Metzger, vice-president. Not pictured is William B. Hoyer. president. Dear Students: In the few short months that I have been privileged to serve the school district as its superintendent, I have come to feel very much a part of the atmosphere of the Bexley High School. This has been brought about largely by the friendliness of the student body, and by the spirit and pride that I have sensed both in and out of the classroom. I have very much enjoyed working with the students and faculty this past year, and I take this opportunity to thank each of you for your part in making 1967—68 the success- ful year that it was. To the Class of 1968 we express a special word of appreciation for the many deeds and accomplishments made on behalf of your school. As a class you have left your mark, and by your deeds you will be remembered. It is with confidence in your ability to meet the greater challenges of the future, that we assure you of our per- sonal regard and best wishes. Sincerely yours, WILLIAM J. GREGG Superintendent Sounds Reflect Dr. William J. Gregg, superintendent Newness In 1968 Newness cannot be overlooked when describing Bex- ley this year. Chants and cheers resounded during athletic events as the student body thundered the teams to victory with new-found spirit. During free periods of the day, the beat from the newly installed juke box pulsated through the halls. Above the mild roar of chatter, the crunching of apples from the renovated apple machine could be heard as students satisfied hunger. Newness was echoed in the carrels of the remodeled library by students attempting to master foreign languages. The addition of ten new faculty members supplemented the returning staff, and they add- ed their voices to the cooperative effort of instruction, discussion, and evaluation. 1968 was the year that the new soul of Bexley was reflected in sounds. Maria Eugenia Ponce, an exchange student from Guatemala through the AFS program, captivated Bexley with her warm smile and accent. Coming from an all girls’ school in Guatemala City, Maria quickly adapted herself to Bexley’s coed system and responded with a convincing “I like it!” She also took part in school activities and cheered the Varsity Lions on to many victories. During her year at Bexley, Maria lived with Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Lowen- thal. Their daughters, Charlie and Carol, adopted Maria as a sister and helped her to adapt to such strange American customs as dating. On June 6, Maria will take part in the graduation exercises of her adopted class and then leave Bexley to join other exchange students in a two-week nation-wide tour. But just as Bexley students will not forget her smile, Maria will always remember her year in the United States. Miss McCurdy teaches Maria to cook “American-Style! Charlie and Maria communicate with the help of a Spanish-English diction- ary. Maria concentrates on her typing. %111 ■ Bexley Hears the Curses, foiled again!” As seniors reviewed their years at Bexley, the sounds that echoed loudest were those of study- ing. Although club activities, dances, and sports made school bearable, the greatest amount of time was spent by students either in classes or studying. The seemingly endless hours of lectures, the agonizing research for term papers, and the last- minute cramming for exams were constant re- minders of the educational purpose of school. And whenever a student became too involved in out- side activities, his report card had very sobering effects. rii It 1 The English Honors IV class tries studying, for a change. Juniors Confront Prom and College Boards As a result of excellent planning, cooperation, and organ- ization, the junior class completed a very successful year. From the Prom to the bake sales, the assiduous juniors were left with many exciting memories of their last year as under- classmen. Because the juniors were wise with their planning, they had raised enough money by January to present the Junior-Senior Prom. Like every preceding class, the juniors did not put the final touches of success on the Prom until minutes before the big event started. Despite chaos and ag- gravation the Prom was a complete success. The college boards were another first which the juniors encountered. Filled with anxiety and fear, the juniors wearily walked into school one October Saturday. The results of this initial board arrived early in December. In addition to the Prom and college boards, the juniors were kept busy with many other activities. Some of the more interesting events were a movie party, the winning of Hockey Night, and participation in athletic cheering sections. All these events and many more helped to round out a very fine year for the junior class. Umgaawuh! 63 Sophomores Take Grand View Of High School Early in the fall the sophomores showed their “pep and energy” in the first big project of the year-the building of the class float. During hectic nights at J. D. Levoff’s, the class showed its unified spirit by finishing its float, “Our Grand View of Victory.” In anticipation of their From, these underclassmen began filling their class treasury with money from such activities as the sale of Bexley book covers, a doughnut sale, and the sponsoring of a movie. Another fund raising effort to gain money for that all-important Prom was a carwash held later in the year. This sophomore class has shown promise to carry on the Bexley tradition of school spirit by its participation in Class Night, Hockey Night, the cheering sections, decorat- ing the halls for Christmas, and all other school events. With teachers watching continually they were greeted with, “Stop! You're going the wrong way! Go back around! After the confusion of the first few days wore off they fell into the routine of the school, electing their j class officers and constructing their first float, Cage the BAC, which placed third in the contest. Wild Billy Graham and the Escalators con- tributed to the theme with their rendition of strictly soulful music. Because of its uniqueness, everyone found the entertain- ment an exciting change from previous years. Queen Mary Ahrens was crowned in the traditional ceremony and reigned with her court over the festivities. All will remember Homecoming ’67 as one of the highlights of the year. And the beat goes on. Following up the spectacular Homecoming Dance, Stu- dent Council presented its New Year’s Eve celebration. Jef- frey Mansion was almost too small to accommodate all of the couples. The Dubonnets presented fantastic arrangements of rock music until their drummer broke his drum. Towards the end of the evening the band played “Auld Lang Syne,” while the students welcomed in the new year with traditional kisses in the confetti-filled air. The Dubonnets sing in the new year. The nominees were: Steve Wyman, Bill Hamrick, Max Goler, Fred Spohn, Jim Moriarty, Larry Williams, Rick Pree, Steve Michaelson, Dave Callif, and Jeff Carroll. The In- strumentals and the Blenders filled the lounge with soul sounds. The crowd voted Steve Wyman the ugliest, topping off a fun- filled and thoroughly enjoyable evening. The pace slows down. Com' on Bexley, We 've got soul! This cheer was one of many which was used by the 1967-68 Student Council's Boys’ Cheering Section at Bex- ley's pep rallies and athletic events. The soulful cheering section, along with other activities, such as football and basketball ticket sales, and the sponsoring of pep club buses to away games, did much to boost the “spirit with soul at Bexley High School. Art Club Visits Galleries This year club members visited the Colum- bus Gallery of Fine Arts and the Capital Uni- versity Art Gallery. They also went to see the Israeli Art Exhibit at Temple Israel, which in- cluded paintings and lithographs of artists such as Emerson Burkhart and Pablo Picasso. The Glass Factory in German Village was the destination of another field trip. Some members of Art Club helped in pre- paring programs for the Christmas concert and in painting backdrops for the Band Parents Show. As in previous years, the club also par- ticipated in the May Festival of the Arts. This year they held an auction of the students’ work after the musical portion of the festival. Music Club Enjoys Entertainment Members wait for a meeting to start. 92 In December the Music Club celebrated the holiday season by caroling for Kinder Key, an organization which uses the money col- lected by carolers for the Heart Fund. Entertaining the club during the year were Mrs. Gundersheimer, who played the harp; Andy Thall, who sang and played his guitar; Jenny Daniel and Charlie Lowenthal, who sang; and the Ensemble, which presented several musical selections. The year ended with the traditional picnic held jointly with the Art Club at Jeffrey Mansion. Music Club Officers: Mollie Peters, secretary-treasurer: Jan Smith, president; Jenny Elin, vice-president. G a t si II I a I I l Pep Club Changes Policy Pep Club promotes school spirit at a football game. Membership of Pep Club increased substantially this year due to a change from closed to open membership. The club helped promote school spirit by making locker tags, long posters for the gymnasium, and hoops for the basketball players to run through. The club also sponsored buses to many football and basketball games. Miss Basnett served as adviser. Pep Club Officers: Luanne Holzworth, president; Sandy Barnett, secretary; Barb Lee. vice-president: Suzanne Pariser, treasurer; Lyn Wells, member-at-large. FT A Members Observe A rush party with the theme “FTA Goes Hippy” started the club’s activities this year. Dr. Gregg, superintendent of schools, a Head-Start representative, and a child psychologist were guest speakers at meetings throughout the year. FTA members also par- ticipated in the observation pro- gram at Cassingham Elementary and Junior High Schools. Some members were even allowed to teach classes. The year ended with the installation of new officers at the Teachers’ Tea in May. FTA Officers: Diane Kessler, secretary; Marian Tilley, treasurer; Mildred Tilley, vice-president; Kris Lindquist, president. 93 Hi-Y Participates in City Day Hi-Y members of Bexley High School got a chance in April to learn how our city’s government functions. For one day, each member was allowed to take over a government position and learn its duties. Hi-Y also had a busy basketball schedule this year. They played such teams as Jonathan Alder, Gahanna, Eastmoor, and Westerville, and marked up another un- defeated season. Mr. Rutter served as the new advisor, and Bill Ham- rick presided over the meetings. AFS Promotes Goodwill “Do you want to buy a bond?” was the frequent question put to Bexley stu- dents by American Field Service members. This year the AFS was organized into a regular club with monthly meetings and dues, which were to be used to help bring a foreign student to Bexley next year. Under the leadership of Ann Deinhardt, who went to Japan under the AFS summer program, and Liz Smith, the American Field Service worked to promote peace and understanding among nations. This year Bexley’s exchange student was Maria Ponce of Guatemala. Maria, as well as students from Brazil and Australia, was featured at the annual AFS assembly held in Febru- ary. Marfa stands outside her new school. 96 Exchange students speak at the AFS assembly. Rifle Club Organized Rifle Club Officers: Ted Jacobs, presi- dent; Bill Browning, vice-president; Patty Pisel, secretary-treasurer. Rifle Club, started last year, became a successful organization this year. The club met at Jeffrey Mansion on Thursday evenings and practiced firing on the police range in the basement. Members used four rifles which were on loan from the federal government. Spanish Club Holds Pinata Party A pinata party was the occasion for a joint meeting of the Bexley and Academy Spanish clubs in December. Maria Ponce, Bexley’s exchange student from Guatemala, was a featured speaker. The club earned money by selling concessions at bas- ketball games. New officers were installed at the annual spring banquet. Spanish Club Officers: Jane Antle, vice-president; Julie Paine, president; Danny Fleming, treasurer; Susan Stegmiller, secretary. Majorettes: Debby McGuire, Lyn Gall, Brenda Grove. Starting the season by boosting school spirit both before the games and during halftime shows, the Marching Band, directed by James Hartline, played such Tijuana Brass tunes as “The Lonely Bull” and “Tijuana Taxi.” The majorettes, who dazzled the fans with two batons and fire batons, were assisted in devel- oping their routines by Mrs. Joanne Bomlitz. Awards were given at the Band Hayride following football sea- son. The band parents showed their support by sponsor- ing a concert by the United States Marine Band and presenting their annual fund-raising project, The Band Parents’ Show. Continuing with enthusiasm into concert season, the band acquired new uniforms, blue blazers with gold crests, in time for the Christmas Concert. They also participated in the Spring Concert, the district contest, and the Festival of the Arts. The Baccalaureate service was their last performance. Choir Gives Many Performances “Remember now, you’re all just peanuts,’’ was Mr. Myers frequent admonition to Bexley’s choir as they prepared for numerous performances throughout the year. Their first test was Parents’ Night, an informal practice at which students showed their parents how much work went into producing each number. Follow- ing closely was the Thanksgiving Concert at which the choir performed for the first time for the student body. They were busy during the Christman season, singing for the traditional school concert and performing at the Country Club and on the television special “Secret San- ta.’’ In January the choir prepared several selections for the district contest. They ended the year by singing at the seniors’ Baccalaureate service. Ensembles: Back row: Harley Greene, Tom Lutzy, Mark Orr, J. D. Color end pages and theme pages helped to carry out this year’s central idea of “sounds.” The 1968 staff, headed by Laurie Samuels and Kris Kramer, tried to capture the school year through the sounds at Bexley High. Echoing through the halls were sounds of rustling papers, slamming lockers, crunching apples, and screams at the start of a weekend. This year’s staff worked toward the goal of achiev- ing a first place certificate in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association rating, a goal achieved by the 1967 staff. The yearbook is judged on photography, composi- tion copy, layout, and the development of the theme. Under the guidance of Linda Hartranft, the staff introduced a new section, the academic section, to re- flect the excellence of Bexley’s scholastic program. The summer supplement was again used to incorporate the spring activities of the past year. The supplement was mainly the work of the junior staff who will undertake next year’s publication. TORCH Wins All-American Rating The TORCH, Bexley High School newspaper, con- tinued its award-winning tradition by receiving the Na- tional Scholastic Press Association's All-American Rating for the sixteenth time in seventeen semesters. Under the leadership of Marcy Deaton, the TORCH continued its format of covering all school activities. Marcy won the “On the Spot” interview contests at two press conventions sponsored by the Journalism Associa- tion of Ohio Schools and the Ohio Press Club. Assisted by their advisor, Mrs. Sara Amos, the staff assembled the Dial-a-Date, the student telephone direc- tory. They earned money for publishing the TORCH by selling concessions at home basketball games in Decem- ber. Because the LAMPLIGHT was a relatively new magazine and the staff suffered many setbacks, only one issue could be published this year. However, the staff was successful in producing a maga- zine which served as a means for students to express themselves in creative writing. Mr. Drewes acted as advisor to the group. Dramatics Club Hosts Sheila The most outstanding Dramatics Club meeting of this year featured Sheila Poenisch, reigning Miss Teenage Columbus and first runner-up to Miss Teenage America, who spoke of her experi- ences and showed movies of the pageants. During the year guest speakers were featured at regular meetings and a joint meeting with another high school’s Dramatics Club was held. Members of the club participated in the school’s presentation of The Man Who Came To Dinner. At the end-of-the-year picnic, eligible club mem- bers were inducted into National Thespians Society. Donna, Renee, and Ann rehearse for the play. Dramatics Club Officers: Kathy Stone, president; Gaye Gronlund, treasurer; Sally Milbourne, member-at-large; Cathy Salt, program chairman; Froncie Hoffhine, vice-president. French Club Makes Octopi The French Club participated in many different programs this year under the guidance of Mrs. Kull and Mrs. Toy. In the fall, when the annual rush party took place, there was a treasure hunt using clues written in French. The club set a precedent this year by conducting meetings entirely in French. Members enjoyed hearing guest speakers and seeing travel films of France as well as making toy octopi in time to send to a French orphanage for Christmas. Latin Club Holds Joint Meeting In December the Latin Club, a chapter of the Ohio Junior Classical League, held a joint meeting with the Art Club. The purpose of the meeting was to celebrate the Roman festival of Saturnalia, from which comes several of our Christmas traditions, and to view the slides taken by Carolyn Smith, who spent a year in Greece. The annual slave induction was held in February with the traditional sacrifice of apple seeds. New offic- ers were chosen at the year-end banquet in May. At this dinner senior Latin students were allowed to eat in a reclining position and were served by the slaves, who were later auctioned off to the highest bidder. Latin Club sent several delegates to the state-wide convention held at Mershon Auditorium. Members of the mythology quizbowl team from Bexley, who were chosen in run-offs at a club meeting, competed. The Bexley chapter won first place in the skit competition for its five minute play, “The Wonderful World of Rome.” Laurie poses questions on mythology. In his first year as head coach, Jim Click incor- porated shrewd innovations that proved successful in a record of four wins, two losses, and three ties—the first winning season since 1958. Seniors Colby Crall, Larry Hamill, Jim Moriarty, Dennis Maupin, and Steve Wyman returned with two letters to provide the hard-hitting nucleus that was re- spected by all opponents. All five were First Team All- BAC. These same five composed the 1967 Shoulder Pad Club. The 1967-68 basketball season was a successful one, thanks to the superlative efforts of the team and coach Gene Millard. Fine shooting and a controlled fast break paved the way for the first winning season in several years. Captains Forman and Michaelson shot exceptionally well. They were outstanding rebounders and excellent leaders. Steve Berlin, forward, provided scoring and re- bounding punch for the Lions. Guards Steve Callif and Scott Weakley were both fine ball handlers whose out- standing shooting was an important factor in many Bexley wins. Coach Gene Millard deserves much credit for the fine job which he did in developing the potential which led to the team's success. TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY The World's Best Yearbooks Are Taylor-made Seniors await graduation Governor Rhodes Speaks at Graduation Commencement exercises for the Bexley High School graduating class of 1968 were held on the evening of June 6. Following the processional, the invocation was given by Rabbi Nathan Zelizer. After two selections by the high school band, the Honorable James A. Rhodes, Governor of Ohio, spoke on the subject, “Education, Em- ployment, and the Future.” One hundred eighty-three seniors then received their diplomas, led by class Valedictorian, Laurie Samuels. Ken Becker receives his diploma. Governor Rhodes addresses the seniors. Seniors file in for Commencement. Seniors Celebrate Mardi Gras” King Bex reigns over the Mardi Gras. Luanne and her date stop for a portrait. On June sixth the newly-graduated class of 1968 and their guests went to an all-night Mardi Gras at Jeffrey Mansion. In the early hours of the evening the party-goers guessed the identities of seniors’ baby pic- tures, had their caricatures drawn, danced to the In- strumentals and the Blenders, and had their fortunes told at the Carnival. At midnight everyone attended a New Orleans style buffet dinner. Fighting off sleepi- ness, the celebrating seniors danced again and won prizes at the shooting gallery, while photographers took candid shots of them. A two-hour show was presented by the college group “Entertainment U.S.A.” Following this variety program, candid slides were shown of the seniors celebrating the evening, and the more daring of the guests went swimming. During breakfast the seniors listened to their class prophecy, written by Sue Schlezinger, Marilyn Marx, and Co- rinne Fendell. During the traditional ceremony, twenty-three scholars were chosen to be new members. Membership in the society is the high- est academic honor that can be bestowed upon a student at Bexley. Seniors must be in the upper one- third of their class while Juniors must be in the upper one-sixth to qualify for admission. In addition to scholarship, all members must exhibit the qualities of character, leadership, and service. Standing: Max Goler, Fred Spohn, Craig Hoffman, Jeff Ralph, John Ludlum, Jeff Carroll. The success of the 1968 track team can be attributed to the persistent hard work and high team spirit which was exemplified by co-cap- tains Tom Carr and Bill Reynolds. The thin- clads compiled a 7 and 1 record. The single loss came against Walnut Ridge with a score of 64 to 63. In addition to having a winning season, this year’s track team set three school records: Tom Carr in the one mile run, Bill Reynolds in the low hurdles, and Jeff Carroll in the two- mile run. Statistically, the nine graduating sen- iors contributed three fourths of the team’s points. Bruce crossed the line. Matt concentrates on running. Will he make it? What goes up must come down. The very fine earned run average, combined for five of the starting pitchers, was less than 1.25. As good as it was, the pitching could not make up for the other aspects of the Lion’s game. The team was not able often enough to support its mound-work and come through with a win. Captain for this year’s squad was Senior Steve Jim swings . . . and connects. Wyman who also filled the catcher’s spot on the team. Next year Mark Orr will take over Steve’s position as captain. During the same assembly in which Orr was named captain, Senior Jim Moriarty was honored as this year’s most valuable player. Fel- low pitcher Roger dayman was named most im- proved. The varsity team consisted of four: Bob Ger- main, Greg Henley, Rob Reinhorn, and Jerry Office. All were first-year lettermen this year and thus had limited experience. But after their trip to North Carolina in the spring Coach felt they were ready for the best, so he scheduled the top three teams in the district: Arlington, Worthington, and Granville. At the district tournament Bexley finished four- teenth out of fifty-six teams. Their over-all record was 2-5. Bexley 8-1 2 Eastmoor 1 2 Bexley 4 Hartley 1 Bexley 4-1 2 Mt. The team made good progress this year in spite of the fact that almost all of the girls were new to the squad and many of their practices were rained out. 03 m CO C s o t- a m —i co £ O ►—« CO H m Z m a m 3 Z t- Back row: Loren Loving, Sue Eschenbrenner, Liz Smith, Becky Carruthers, Lisa Deinhardt.
