Volume 31 Published by the Senior Class Bexley High School Bexley, Ohio exieo 67 r v EACH FACE m -i A WORLD •?% jtolUAWWi 1 ■c A WORLD DEDICATION To John F. Schacht — beloved teacher, author, and devoted friend — who has in- spired and encouraged his students, we respectfully dedicate this book. It seems particu- larly fitting that we dedicate our book to one who not only has brought light into many lives, but also has given graciously of his time and patience. Mr. Schacht came to Bexley in 1932 and has since compiled a laudable list of achieve- ments. He is the author of many textbooks among which are Contemporary Geometry and Contemporary Algebra and Trigonometry. Mr. Schacht, as recognized by Life Mag- azine, was the first to introduce mechanical aids — Schacht’s dynamic devices — to the study of plane geometry. It is in respect to his accomplishments and in admiration of his service to his students that the Class of 1967 dedicates this book to John F. Schacht. CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION..... 10 SENIORS............ 22 JUNIORS............ 52 SOPHOMORES......... 60 FRESHMEN........... 68 ACTIVITIES......... 76 SPORTS.............100 SOCIAL. 116 IN MEMORIAM Roses are for remembrance. Dr. E. D. Jarvis passed away when the rose bushes were stark and frozen in the winter winds. Who was Dr. Jarvis? He was a magnanimous man Who liked the youth of America and strived to improve their minds. He was a teacher by profession. And he was a teacher by example: Science teacher. Lecturer, Author, And Superintendent of Bexley Schools. Kindness, Consideration, Patience, And quiet wisdom gentled by humor. That was Dr. Jarvis. He was an educator; But more important, He was our friend. The rose bushes will warm and bloom again in the soft spring winds. A rose to his memory. . .V.V. School Year Blends Hope, Change, Sorrow Mr. C. W. Jones — principal of Bexley High School and interim su- perintendent of the Bexlev School System. Change! Tragedy! Hope! These three words constitute the predominant spirits which rose and fell within the course of the 1966-67 school year. This year has provided both bright and optimistic experiences as well as tragically sorrowful ones. Early in the fall, the Bexley School System lost its super- intendent, Dr. E. D. Jarvis. In this respect, the 1966-67 school year has been marred by bewilderment and grief. However, this school year has also been host to remarkable improvements. When entering the building this fall, the students became aware of the added equipment around the building. There were not only new overhead projector screens, but there were also closed circuit television outlets in each room. In this respect, Bexley has been the field lor progress. Hope! Yes, the 1966-67 school year hints at the hope for a new and even better year to come. Bexley plans to join the Mid-Eight Conference, now being developed, by September of 1968. The conference will include Grove- port, Grove City, London, Marysville, Hilliard, Grand- view, Mifflin, and Bexley. In addition, Bexley plans to abandon the I.B.M. system of scheduling. Yes, things look bright for Bexley in 1968. Board, of Education: Standing: John Metzger, Mrs. Donald Williamson, William Hoyer, vice-president. Seated: Donald Elsass, Dr. John Lewis, president. Holly Campbell, Tom Carr, Jeff Carroll, Ed Chittenden Prom and Boards Challenge Juniors Having just become accustomed to the IBM organized classes, Juniors had to cope with a new problem, the A and B system. Although simple in design, the system persisted in confusing students. The only basic problem was remembering which weeks were A” and which were B.” A solution was to rush down to the locker room in anticipation of gym class, only to discover that one was in the wrong class. Yes, automa- tion and efficient innovations certainly have simplified high school life. As if homework and college boards were not enough, Jun- iors had to cope with another problem — the prom. In addi- tion to raising enough money, deciding on the theme, and drawing up plans, enough workers had to be found. Yet even after all the plans had been made, the Juniors found that their difficulties were just beginning. Leaving paint-spattered clothes, sleepless nights, and unfinished homework behind, the Juniors finally succeeded in creating the prom. With the tasks of their junior year completed, the members of the Class of 1968 looked ahead to the start of their senior year. Sophomores Replace Confusion With Accomplishment After having experienced the humbling effects of the Freshman year, the class of 1969 entered Bexley in the fall with confidence and assurance that all would be easy. Idlings seemed to be going well, at least for the first five minutes. Then came the deluge of rules and regulations, each seeming to begin with, You may not,” and suddenly the Sophomores realized that things had not changed over the summer. After the initial confusion, Sophomores began to dist- inguish themselves in several ways. The first accomplishment was the winning of Hockey Night by the Sophomore girls. Not only did the Sophomores excel in athletics, but a new band was also established by several Sophomore bovs. After mak- ing their debut early in the year, the Common Market gained considerable recognition. In the midst of a system where rooms are numbered by floors, why does room 220 have its own private stairway to confuse students, and what in the world is study hall 219 doing where it is when it obviously should be at the other end of the hall? Not only did searching for classrooms present its complications, but freshmen found themselves major charac- ters in the best seller Up the Down Staircase. However, in- stead of being praised for their efforts, they were confronted with ”Go back up and go around.” Oh, those first few frantic davs! Schedule interpretation provided mild neurosis in some cases, but when a freshman English class was assigned to Mr. Eliopulos the world almost came to an end for all concerned. Shortlv, however, as faces became more familiar, the first distraught expressions began to fade. Freshmen then em- barked upon a How to Study Program” which they were as- sured would be of invaluable assistance as soon as such ques- tions as How do we study for this course?” were answered to everyone’s satisfaction. After the first few traumatic days, the freshmen became ac- climated to high school life and demonstrated early in the year their ability and class spirit. The cries of hit it, hit it,” and cheers were heard from the girls clad in white and blue as they took second place in Girls’ Hockey Night. And once again the Levoff driveway produced a prize winning float when the Freshman’s ’’Pound the Pacers” won second prize. The Student Suggestion Box in the library and the Troubleshooter Committee are two of the new methods estab- lished to give all a chance to voice their views. The Trouble- shooter Committee took several opinion polls and dealt with problems such as school spirit. Health Council Sponsors TB Tests This year the student Health Council once again assumed the role of the unpraised helper of the school and community. Council members braved the elements in November to seek adult volunteers for the Red Cross Blood Drive. They also sponsored physical therapy for a young polio pa- tient, Julie Lopper. The United Appeals drive fell under their auspices. Collections in home rooms brought the Bexley High School donation to about $120.00. Most of the juniors hold fond memories of their blood- curdling tuberculosis tests sponsored and operated by the Health Council in conjunction with the Franklin County Tu- berculosis Society. All juniors were offered the opportunity to have a TB skin test as part of the TB Society’s fight to detect the disease in its early stages. Although the Health Council operated on a very limited budget, they accomplished a great deal. Mrs. Betty Rogers served as the faculty sponsor. The membership varies from those who possess potential talent for an art career to those who merely show an interest in art. The organization, al- though an integral part of the art classes, also includes those members who are not taking art. Under the guidance of Mr. Trivella, the club visited several art galleries and exhibits around the city. Members also illustrated books for blind chil- dren this year. The familiar words Silent night, holv night” rang through the evening air for several nights this past winter as the Music Club performed for Kinder Kev. Led by President Marcia Smilack, the club toured Bexley, singing their repertoire of Christmas carols. In a November meeting, the club was treat- ed to a movie which analyzed the Grand Canyon Suite, while in the spring, the club attended an informal harp concert. Pep Club Increases Influence Pep Club this year, like each year in the past, has strived to promote school spirit. Increased membership boosted the ef- fectiveness of the Club’s activities. Pep posters, for the halls, 1 signs for the gymnasium, badges for the students, and identi- fying tags for lockers increased student interest in various sports activities. The Club also helped to increase attendance at football and basketball games bv sponsoring buses for the students. A pep rally held for the wrestling team helped in- crease attendance at matches. Latin Club Holds Slave Auction Twenty cents!” A quarter!” A dollar!” were among the shouts that rang out at Latin Club’s annual slave sale during, the spring banquet. The banquet, featuring entertainment by the slaves, also spotlighted the naming of new officers. Be- sides the banquet, the Bexley chapter of Junior Classical League was kept busy by a Christmas party, a quiz show, the annual induction of new members, and regular monthly meet- ings. Veron basketball game. The Great Pinata” was the theme of the dance, and music was provided by the Stoics. In February, a native Cuban spoke on Castro and the affairs of Cuba today. The traditional banquet, held at the conclusion of the year, served for the in- duction of new officers. Mr. Larry Smith functioned as the advisor. The marching hand enter- tained at the half-time shows at all football games. The Pep band, organized last year, played at home basketball games and at pep rallies. The concert hand performed more fre- quently for the student body this year than they have for sev- eral years. They played for the Christmas Concert in Decem- ber, the Band Parents’ Show in February, the Spring Concert in March, and the Festival of Arts in May. Choir Entertains Often Forget the audience and watch me was Mr. Myers’ com- mand to the choir as they performed for the annual Veteran s Dav concert. And watch they did. keeping their attention on Mr. Myers as he directed the numerous concerts throughout the year. The choir’s schedule has been a busy one, with many ap- pearances throughout the city. Christmas time was a particu- larly hectic period. They sang at the lighting of the Bexley Christmas tree, and as a special treat Santa Claus distributed candy canes to the choir members. Later in the month, upon the request of WMNI, the choir presented a radio program in which they sang selections from their Christmas repertoire. Just before Christmas, the choir appeared in the annual Spring Concert and the Thanksgiving program. In keeping with the Easter spirit, the choir took part in the Lenten servi- ces before school. With the knowledge that several ol the members gained at Fred Waring’s music shop this summer and with the inva- luable guidance of Mr. Myers, the choir maintained its high standard of excellence. During School Year BEXLEO Plans Summer Supplement Unlike yearbooks in the past, the 1967 BEXLEO will be accompanied by a summer supplement to give students a sec- ond opportunity to enjoy and reminisce the varied events and activities of the past vear. It will enable the staff to provide more complete coverage of this year’s spring activities. Working around the central idea of faces”, the staff has endeavored to make this year a memorable one by emphasiz- ing the facial expressions of Bexley’s students and faculty. What better way is there to remember high school than through the familiar faces of its students? The staff is deeply indebted to Mr. John Dickey, the faculty advisor, for his invaluable assistance, guidance, and patience in helping put the yearbook together. A love of journalistic writing,” asserted Beth Cooper, TORCH editor, talented staff members who are willing to work long hours, and,” she sighed, ”a lot of elbow grease.” Elbows were well greased this year, for the TORCH again won several awards. In the December contests sponsored by the Ohio Press dub, Beth won first place for the ' On- the-Spot” news contest by interviewing Bob Manry, who crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a sailboat. Bruce Peterson won first place for a sports article. He also received third place for an editorial. Last December the staff assembled the Dial-a-Date, the handy student telephone directory, under the supervision of Judi Cohen and Nancy Kelley, head typists. The TORCH sponsored the annual Valentine’s Day Dance during which the King and Queen of Hearts were chosen. Mrs. Sara Amos gave up her valuable time to advise the group who appreciated her fine suggestions. Beth Cooper edits the TORCH with discretion. In Buckeye Athletic Conference competition the Lions won three of their six games, including two victories over co-champion Delaware Hayes, and linished in third place. The Fighting Lion offense displayed its finest effort in the victory over Urbana by a score of 57-0. the highest point total ever attained by a Lion grid squad. A stubborn defense led by Captain Doug Felger was also instrumental in several of the hard-fought contests. John Main, Colby Crall, and Jim Moriarty were named to the All-BAC team. Dave Pariser was selected as the most im- proved player and was named to the Shoulderpad Club as were Jim Moriarty, Larry Hamill, and Colby Crall. Only after a defeat in the second Urbana game did the Lion cagers lose their bid for an outright championship. Guided by Coach Gene Millard, the Lions compiled a regu- lar season record of 9 and 9. The team averaged 57 points per game to their opponents’ 56. In tournament play, the Lions were turned back by Buckeye Valley, 55-42. Captain Bob Forman, junior forward, proved an excellent leader for the squad. Forman produced a free throw comple- tion percentage of 77, the finest in several years by a Lion eager. Named to the All-BAC first team was Bob Forman. Jim Duffey, senior forward, and Steve Michaelson, junior center, were selected for the All-Conference second team. Several swimmers showed improvement throughout the season. Dennis Maupin, junior, greatly improved his time in the 50 yard freestyle as did Bill Casto in the 400 yard freestyle to give the Lions added strength. Dan Kayne, sophomore, and Fred Mendelson, freshman, performed as expected and be- came consistent scorers in diving competition. Co-captains A. J.
