Page Fifty-six Proraod Misra Exchange students at Bexley’s A.F.S. Day. Galo Vasquez O Ye Peoples of the Earth This year Bexley High School has had the pleasure of hosting two foreign exchange students, Galo V squez and Promod Misra. Galo, a junior, is from Quito, Ecuador, and is living with Mr. and Mrs. Berthrand Japickse. The First Community Church of Columbus selected Carl Japickse to send to Ecuador in exchange for Galo for one school year. Promod Misra is a representative from Kanpur, India, selected for us by the American Field Service, an organization that selects American students to visit foreign lands, and also students from other continents to make America their home for one year. Promod, a senior, is staying with Dr. and Mrs. E. V. Turner. This year, a member of the junior class, Galo is a member of our Spanish Club and an avid noon sports participant. Galo, proficient at many sports, particularly enjoys playing ping-pong with Promod and organizing Saturday afternoon soccer games. Promod came across the ocean to America on a ship carry- ing approximately five-hundred other American Field Service students. Promod enjoys playing cricket and is proud to inform us that India has the world’s best field hockey team. Galo plans to return to Quito sometime this June. Promod will leave Columbus in July and will travel in the western United States with a group of American Field Service students. Promod and Galo have certainly been worthy ambassadors from their respective countries to our high school and to our nation, but, of even more importance to us students at Bexley, both of the boys have been our delightful friends. Promod learns the complexities of language. Galo in a rare, studious moment. Page Fifty-seven Another score for the Class of ’64! Top Six: Jim, Woody, Dick, Steve, Dick, Bob. Student Council Student Council, the student government organization of the school, is composed of the council offi- cers, defeated candidates for office, class officers, president of Student Health Council, and the homeroom representatives. Under the capable leadership of Marc Lackritz, president; Caroline Smith, vice-president; Joanne Coopersmith, secretary-treasurer; and Mr. David Weis, faculty advisor, the council experienced an active and profitable year. Summer activities of the council included two open houses, and sponsoring attendance of students to Buckeye Boys’ State and the Advanced Leadership Workshop at Ohio University. Council members again supervised the operation of the popcorn and apple machines this year. Both projects proved to be the council’s chief source of income. The homecoming elections, bonfire, parade, and float contest were well planned and highly enjoyed by all who participated. The social committee was in charge of the affair. Pre-Christmas activities included decorating the halls, collecting Christmas baskets for the South Side Settlement, and urging students to send Christmas cards to Dick Golden. “Let Out a Roar for ’64” was the theme of the New Year’s Eve dance held at the Jeffrey Mansion. Balloons and hand-painted murals enhanced the festive mood of the occasion. As classes resumed after the holidays, so did council activities. The first Alumni Day was initiated on January 2 with the hopes that it would become an annual affair. AFS day, held late in January, gave students the opportunity to become acquainted with the American Field Service program and to learn about teenagers in other countries. Health Council The Student Healtli Council serves not only to inform the students of various problems relating to health, but also to promote the general health standards of the school. This organization is composed of two boys and girls from each class. They are selected from the freshman class and remain on the council all four years. Donations contributed for the United Appeals drive from students and teachers were used to aid such organizations as the Y.M.C.A., Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, settlement houses, and recreation centers. The blood donor project was to inform the community how to proceed in donating blood. A rela- tively small amount of blood was on reserve this year for emergencies. Tuberculin skin tests are given annually to juniors. Through these tests, seventy-five percent of all positive reactors are found. The city-wide Student Conference on Smoking was held last year. As a result of this conference, the council decided to have its own assembly on teenage smoking. The movie, “Is Smoking Worth It,” was shown. The officers were Cheri Papier, president; Kalitsa Tsitouris, vice-president; and Kathy Offenburg, secretary-treasurer. Miss Love and Mrs. Manly served as advisors. National Honor Society On February 27, thirty-one new members were inducted into the National Honor Society. Juniors in the upper sixth of their class and seniors in the upper third of their class are eligible for election. Students are considered on the basis of leader- ship, scholarship, character, and service. Each person elected to the society has excelled in each of these four principles. Mrs. Antoinette Barr, sponsor, planned the cere- mony. Short speeches were made by Barbara Klages, Shyla Jones, Mike Myers, and Charles Chittenden on qualifications for the society. Society members, Pam Mulbarger, Dan Levoff, Cheri Papier, Sherry Christie, Marc Lackritz, and Sharon Taylor, spoke on various aspects of the organization. Quill and Scroll Quill and Scroll, the honorary journalism society Bexley High School, held its induction of new mem- bers at the fifth annual journalism banquet. Mrs. Marilyn Trishman and Mrs. Sara Amos presented the thirty-two inductees with their honors. To be eligible for membership in the society, one must be a member of the Bexleo or Torch staff, be in the upper third of his class, and have the recom- mendation of the advisor. The purpose of the so- ciety is to recognize outstanding contributions to the success of the school publications. National Thespian Society Preparing a successful stage production depends on the diligent effort of everyone involved from the stage hands to those who have the leading parts in the show. National Thespian Society was estab- lished in 1955 for the purpose of rewarding these people for their conscientious work. Those being inducted into National Thespian So- ciety this year earned their ten points necessary for membership by performing any of the various tasks necessary to produce “You Can’t Take It With You” and “The Pajama Game.” Back Row: Jack Davis, Ted Hubbard, Bill Brust, Dan Levoff, John Grossman, Tom Williamson, Ivan Gold, Chuck Hoffhine, Dick Berman, Rich Terapak, Perry Zylberstein. Bexleo This year’s BEXLEO has aspired to give the students a precise and detailed account of the year’s activi- ties. The theme for the 1963-1964 yearbook, “Horizons,” has been carried out through the background of each divider page and the corresponding quotations. The cover, depicting a nocturnal horizon, and the introduction section, featuring the horizon of a student, completes the theme. Barbara Klages, the editor-in-chief, and Mrs. Trishman, the new advisor of the staff this year, have put much time and effort into making the 1964 BEXLEO a success. Other staff members include: Richard Tera- pak, business and advertising manager; Pam Mulbarger, literary editor; Charlene Gilbert, photographic editor; Diana Dienst, art editor; Linda Howe and Dan Levoff, senior section; Janet Calland and Susie Jones, girls’ sports; Carla Coffman, faculty; Sandy Shumaker and Shyla Jones, student government; Kay Ingalls and Loryn Hazan, social; Herb Kahn and John Grossman, boys’ sports; Terry Friedman and Laurie Kahn, classes; Connie Julian and Robyn Lurie, clubs; and Gail Blatt, secretary. We thank our advisor, Mrs. Trishman, for her wonderful help. The time, effort, and guidance which she has selflessly given to the staff are beyond measure or comparison. Torch Tlie 1964 TORCH Staff attempted to carry on the outstanding achievements of past years by bringing a well-rounded, interesting format of news to the students. Under the leadership of Editor Barry Thall, the staff worked hard to produce a newspaper of which the students would be proud. With the help of Mrs. Sara Amos, advisor, the TORCH has achieved the All-American rating, the highest in the United States, for eight of the last nine semesters. Staff members for this year were associate editor. Sherry Christie; page one, Bob Greene; page two, Dianne Kushner; page three, Judy Furman; sports, Lee Caryer; business manager, Richard Klass; circula- tion manager. Bob Milbourne; and photographers, Dave Swedlow and Bill Murphy. In addition to its regular publications, the TORCH sponsored a dance following the high school pro- duction of “You Can’t Take It With You,” the Valentine King and Queen of Hearts Dance, and the “Dial- a-Date,” a student telephone directory. Activities began be- fore the school year as a forty member delegation attended the National J.C.L. Convention. By request of the national president, the Bexley group presented their “Sound of Virgil” skit at the convention. Another activity was conducting the campaign for Barbara Klages, who successfully ran for the office of national secretary. Bexley was represented this year by a state officer, David Schaffter, who was elected third vice- president. State activities for the Bexley Latin Club included providing ushers and pages for the state convention and entering the state scrapbook contest. The Latin Club was a very active organization at school also. Meetings were held monthly and each offered unusual and interesting programs. These included a Thanksgiving program featuring original songs, a Saturnalia festival, and the traditional freshmen initiation ceremony. The annual Latin Club banquet brought a close to the year. Held in the lounge, the colorful event honored the advanced Latin students. The freshmen served as slaves and entertained the group with a skit. This year’s officers were Mary Jane Morris, president; Carla Coffman, vice-president; Paula Young, secretary; Connie McCleary, treasurer and Miss Wylie, advisor. “The Sound of Virgil” goes to Kansas! Girls’ Athletic Club The “Olympics” rush party began the year for the members of the Girls’ Athletic Club. Dressed in costumes representing a favorite international sport, the girls enjoyed a picnic dinner on the lawn of the Jeffrey Mansion. Hockey Night determined the Seniors the school champions of the sport. The club sponsored con- cessions for a football game as a money raising project. At Christmas time, toys were collected from the members and donated to the children of Franklin Village. The Senior girls’ varsity basketball team was victorious again this year as each of the four classes vied in the annual “Class Night.” Kalitsa Tsitouris was crowned Sports Queen of 1964 by Jeff Schmidt, basketball captain, at the event. The annual GAC Banquet at which sportsheads were announced and officers installed, closed a very busy and profitable year for the Girls’ Athletic Club. A disappointing loss was suffered to Whetstone, 49-46 the following week. After a loss to Academy, 63-32, the tankers came back to dunk Bishop ffartley, 45-40. After two successive losses were suffered to Ontario and Colonel Crawford, 63-32 and 59-36 respectively, the tankers splashed to defeat St. Charles, 66-29. Wrestling This year’s wrestling team, captained by Bill Reed and Gregg Robins, went through a year of re- building. Due to a lack of experience among the members, the team completed the season with one win and nine losses. The season opened with a disappointing loss to Newark, 24-19. The grapplers then suffered a loss to Groveport, 34-11. Still looking for their first victory, the team was eked out by Grand- view by a score of 20-17. The next three matches found the Lions overpowered by three strong teams. The Lions were beaten by Eastmoor, 35-6, by Walnut Ridge, 41-8, and by Worthington, 38-2. The following week, Bexley crushed Granville, 35-8. Then the team was deprived of another victory, losing to Hartley, 22-21. Upper Arlington, a much improved and much stronger team than the one of the preceding year, topped Bexley, 45-0, after which the Lions were again defeated by Central, 34-7. Coach Tenwalde has prospects for a better season next year with six returning lettermen heading the squad. “Get ready, get set . . .” Captains Reed and Robins and Coach Tenwalde. Under the guidance of Coach David Weis, the team recorded its first victory by defeating Eastmoor, 5-0. Whetstone was the second victim of the Lions in a 5-0 shutout. As the season progressed, the team was the victor in two matches with Chillicothe, 3-2, after which Academy handed the netmen their first defeat, 3-2. Strong opposition was expected in the future matches by Arlington and Worthington. Two victories seemed to be assured when the Lions played Delaware and Grandview. The Bexley tennis team will partici- pate in the District Tournament to be held at Ohio State University May 22-23. The team will be repre- sented by two singles players and two doubles teams. A match with Delaware was then played after which the Lions found themselves with an 8-8 tie. Varsity members of the team include three Senior lettermen; Bob Peterson, Woody Woodworth, and Barry Thall. Brian Kotzin, a freshman, gave substantial strength to the team as the fourth varsity member. Three prime prospects for next year’s team are Tom Tuckerman, Carl Poston, and Bill Callif. By mid-season, Bob Peterson was the medalist of the team with two 73’s. Success in the District Golf Match was anticipated due to fine talent and experience of the team. The districts will be held on May 15 at the Ohio State University Gray Course. Last year’s champion Upper Arlington is favored to repeat as district king. Seniors: Peterson, Woodworth, Thall. Captain Peterson and Coach Smith. Front Row: Rick Grove, John Whitehouse, Bob Barr, Gary Deeds, Bill Meeks, Cam Orr, Charlie Burkam, Leon Friedland, Chris Dyer, Doug Squeo. Baseball After an unfavorable start, this year’s baseball team has shown steady improvement. Under the capable direction of Coach Donald Dejong, the Lions’ diamond corps has produced both thrilling and exciting mo- ments for their Bexley fans. They have exhibited rare spirit and have instilled this spirit within their loyal supporters. Bexley was led this season by Captain Walt Wallace who was firmly backed up by four returning letter- men, Doug Squeo, Marc Lackritz, Mike Myers, Bill Salt, and Tim Greiner, who compose the nucleus of this year’s baseball team. Much additional help was expected from improved players Chris Dyer, Robin Wells, Cam Orr, and Charles Burkam. The pitching staff was led by Mike Myers and supplemented by Sam Geldis, Bill Meeks, and Walt Wallace. At mid-season, the team had defeated Bishop Hartley by a score of 7-6. The score was tied at the bottom of the seventh inning and two outs were against the Lions, but Mike Myers hit a home run and clinched the victory. Bexley lost to Delaware, Grandview, Urbana, and Linden McKinley. Most of the games were very close and could have gone either way. The teams in the C.B.L. were all experienced ones this year and provided much competition. Future Bexley baseball opponents include Upper Arlington, Mt. Vernon, and C.B.L. powerhouse Worthington. Bexley will play defending district champion Eastmoor in the tournament. Back Row: Larry Snyder, Tom Spangler, Jim Homberger, Karl Heinke, Jonas Hernnann, Joe Theibert, David Her- wald. Track Coached by Russ Owen and captained by Tom Leukart and Rick Harbold, the track team had great strength this year especially in singular events. By mid-season, the cindermen had posted five victories out of the seven meets in which they had participated. The season opened with a loss to Brookhaven. but the Lions bounced back to defeat Circleville. Coach Owen then saw his team defeat Grandview. After a 64-54 loss to Delaware, the team partici- pated in the Ohio Relays. The cindermen defeated Franklin Heights and Mifflin in a triangular meet. They then went on to defeat Westerville. The Arlington Relays and the All C.B.L. Meet, held at Bexley this year, proved to be the most difficult competition for the Lions. Homecoming Queen Caroline Smith and her court presented the medals to the victorious thinclads at the most outstanding and thrilling meet of the year. The success in the league meets was anticipated due to the outstanding past j erformances of Van Snider, Tom Leukart, Rick Harold, Jay Maupin, and Fred Grimm. The outstanding freshman of the team was A. J. Myers. Rick Harbold and Tom Leukart, shooting to break records in the pole vault and discus, respectively, were two of the leading scorers of the 1964 track team. He had not only been the most active leader of his country in its history but the youngest. Those qualities which endeared him to the youth of America—his buoyant smile and comfortable wit, his courage to de- fend that which was right, and his un- wavering determination to promote peace throughout the world—will insure his place in the hearts of today’s youth.
