They remember events— winning the float contest as sophomores, planning the Prom in their Junior year, and electing the Homecoming Queen and her court this year. But they also remember less tangible aspects of their high school years. They have matured in knowl- edge, in responsibility, and in friendship. With many significant memories of their experiences, the seniors are prepared to face the challenges of the future. Page Fifty-four ii Susan Freedman. Anette Plahte. Susan and her hostess, Charlotte Buckner. Anette indicates her home in Norway. WALK TOGETHER, TALK TOGETHER This year we were fortunate to have two foreign exchange students with us on the American Field Service program. Anette Plahte from Hovik Farms, Norway, who lived with the James F. Kurtz family, arrived in the heat of August; and in January, Susan Freedman, who stayed with the Benjamin F. Buckner family, came from Johannes- burg, South Africa. The American Field Service is an organization that selects students from America to visit foreign lands, and also students from other continents to make America their home for one year. The stu- dents cross the seas by boat or air and spend about three days in New York City at the Ameri- can Field Service Headquarters. Then they are dispersed to enter their new homes and commu- nities. At the end of their visit they are again joined together in small groups to take the “bus trip.” The caravans of three or four buses travel throughout the United States, allowing the stu- dents to see many parts of the country and meet many people from each section. The two-week trip ends in Washington, D. C., with a handshake from the President. This year as members of the Senior Class, Anette and Susan have joined in many activities. Varsity and intramural sports events, club meet- ings, and other Americanized school functions have found both students participating and eager. They have not only enjoyed our activities but have enriched them with their ideas. These ideas we have gained not only from the formal speeches we have heard them make, but even more from the friendly talks we have shared with them. The American Field Service has offered us this year two wonderful and unforgettable friends. But it has also offered us the opportunity to be ambassadors for America, and them to be am- bassadors for their nations. As is explained by Sanskrit . . . “Walk together, talk together, O ye peoples of the Earth, for then and only then shall ye have peace.” Anette presents Susan at pep rally. Student Council Student Council consists of the class officers and home room representatives who are working as a student organization which discusses problems affecting the student body. Bexley’s council this year was headed by Edward Pritchett, president; Joel Brandt, vice-jrresident; and Lynn Elsass, secretary-treasurer. Mr. David Weis served as faculty advisor and supervised the meetings and functions sponsored by Student Council. “My Fair Ladies” was the theme of this year’s annual Homecoming Dance sponsored by the council. Homecoming festivities, including the bonfire, float contest, and parade, were also planned by the organization. This year Student Council members were in charge of the popcorn and apple machines. Popcorn was sold at the football, basketball, and baseball games, while the apple machine was of service in the lounge to all students. Both ma- chines provided a great source of income for the council. Representatives to the newly formed Area Student Council were Mary Jane Chittenden, Dan Levoff, and Edward Pritchett. This is an organization to pro- mote better inter-school relations and to provide for an exchange of ideas among its members. Christmas time found Student Council members collecting food to contribute to the Southside Settlement. The annual New Year’s Eve dance at the Jeffrey mansion was again sponsored by the council. Other activities throughout the year included financing Christmas hall decorations, revision of the constitution, and donating to the school a tape recorder. Under the leadership of President Kalitsa Tsitouris, Vice-president Lynn Elsass, and Secretary Marilyn Kurtz, Student Health Council has been quite busy. It sponsored First Aid classes after school. It also led the very successful United Appeal campaign, and sponsored Tuberculosis Tests. An informative movie on cancer was shown to students and their parents in the early spring. The Student Health Council sent several representatives to a conference on lung cancer and sponsored a medical careers day. Miss Margaret Love acted as advisor to the organization and was very pleased with their efforts. Will these be the doctors of the future? National Honor Society March fifteenth’s National Honor Society assem- bly honored those students who had excelled in the areas of character, scholarship, leadership, and service throughout their high school careers. Students in the upper sixth of the junior class and the upper third of the senior class are eligible to receive membership into this society. Planned by the society’s sponsor, Mrs. Sara Amos, the assembly included speeches about the history and requirements of the society given by the ten seniors who had been inducted last year. A reception for relatives of the honored students followed the assembly. This year seventeen seniors joined the ten cho- sen last year, and eleven juniors were inducted also. To be chosen as a member in the National Honor Society is the highest honor Bexley High School can bestow, as it selects only those students who have excelled in each of the four principles of the society. This is true of the marching band durin football season and equally true of the concern band throughout the remainder of the year. All of the football games were enlivened b stirring music and often by spectacular and well executed band formations on the field. These peril formances reached a climax in the Homecomingi Parade. As a good neighbor gesture the band alstji participated in Capital University’s Homecominpi parade. When late November weather brought the bancjt indoors, the more serious music of the year was tc continue in many appearances. The formal mid-winter concert was presented in January. Torch In 1963 the Torch staff attempted to produce a paper that would not only include a coverage of the student activities, but a coverage of students as well. The staff, led by co-editors Harriet Nalty and Steve Ault, strove to develop a paper based on student interest. Through more feature stories and interviews, the Torch produced a paper every stu- dent would enjoy. Much planning and hard work go into making a newspaper a success. Every month the Torch staff members met the press deadline after weeks of planning, writing, and layouts. Mrs. Sara Amos gave much to the success of the Torch this year, as in past years. With her guidance, the 1962-63 Torch has met the excellent standards of past Torches. Positions on the staff were Page One, Doug Woodyard and Bob Granat; Page Two, Cindy Levoff; Page Three, Kathy Bidlack; Sports Editor, Barry Thall; Business Managers, Joel Slaven, Phil Magley, and Irv Godofsky; Art Editor, Sherry Christie; and Photographer, David Swedlow. The Torch can be proud of the fact that sub- scription records were broken this year, as more Torches were sold than ever before. The staff spon- sored the sale of the Dial-a-Date, the student tele- phone directory, and the sale of the April Fool’s Day issue of Torch lire. A football dance and the annual Valentine’s Day dance were also sponsored bv the Torch this year. Bexleo This year, as in past years, the Bexleo staff has produced a yearbook with you, the students, in mind. The high standards which the Bexleos of the past have set were our goals this year. We selected the theme “Gateways,” through which we have presented our high school year 1962-1963. The addition of class histories, a greater influence of theme, and more informal pictures with original layout patterns were the major improvements in this year’s publication. The staff felt that these alterations add interest and give a more detailed account of this year’s activities. Gail Gertner as Editor and Mary Jane Chittenden as Associate Editor have put much time and effort into making the 1963 Bexleo a success. Other mem- bers of the staff are Edward Pritchett, Advertising Manager; Jeff McClelland, Business Manager; Dody Schwartz, Literary Editor; Pam Robinson and Shep Kahn, Art Editors; Marilyn Kurtz, Senior Section; Sharky Roberts and Barbara Koltun, Girls’ Sports; Judy Danchik, Clubs; Missy Heffernan, Faculty; Jane Gumble and Carole Glick, Classes; Lynne Elsass, Student Government; Janice Brenner, Social Section; and Libby Lemmon, Secretary and Layout Assistant. The debt of gratitude that this year’s Bexleo staff owes to Mr. Ralph Howell can never be paid. The time, effort, and guidance which he has self- lessly given to the staff are beyond measure or com- pare. We thank our adviser, Mr. Howell, for his wonderful help. The Bexleo is your book. We hope that you will enjoy it and through it save the memory of the 1962-’63 school year. Standing: Judy Danchik, Libby Lemmon, Barbara Koltun. Football Under the direction of head coach Harold “Ben” Tenwalde, Bexley’s 1962 Blue Lions experienced a varied season with three wins, five losses, and one tie. On September 7 the season opened with Bexley on top by reason of a victory over Logan 22 to 0. Host to St. Charles the follow- ing week, the Lions were defeated 41 to 16. Two scoring runs by Jay Maupin and Rick Mauger proved to he in vain, as the Golden Bears of Upper Arlington downed the Lions 34 to 16. Amidst a downpour and on a wet field Bexley lost to Whitehall 36 to 20. Parents’ Night, October 5, found Bexley tied with Worthington 14 to 14. Upsetting second-rated host Mt. Vernon, the Lions emerged victorious on the winning end of a 24 to 8 score. Bexley went on to outplay Urbana the following week 26 to 8. October 26 saw Bexley drop its Homecom- ing game to Delaware 20 to 8. Rick Harbold scored a 66-yard touchdown run in the losing cause. Bexley fell before the Grandview Bob- cats in the last game of the season 20 to 8. Co-Captain Mauger and Jay Maupin won All-CBL honors this year, and six Bexley grid- ders won honorable mention. These were Schmidt, Curl, Brandt, Packard, Williamson, and Snider. At the November banquet Van Snider and Jay Maupin were announced as 1963 Co- Captains. Basketball Head basketball coach Millard’s Bexley cagers ended up the 1962-63 season with a deceptive record of five wins and fourteen losses, as five games were lost with a total of only fifteen points. The Lions dropped the first four games of the season to opponents Grove City, Worthington, St. Charles, and Urbana. The following games were close ones, Bex- ley winning two of five. The Blue Lions de- feated Delaware’s Pacers 36-29, a slow game which was followed by an exciting Grand- view victory 50-48, and a non-league win by Columbus West 62-55. Upper Arlington seemed to have the Golden Bears’ luck in the last seconds of the game as they defeated Bexley’s home team 48-46. Bexley then de- feated Whitehall 60-54, and the following week, the Lions were outplayed by Mt. Vernon 66-34. In the second round of CBL action, Bexley cagers won two games of seven. In an exciting last minute spurt, the Lions defeated the league-leading, state ranked Worthington 40-39. Bexley then lost to first and second ranked Urbana and Mt. Vernon. Last place Delaware found the Lions too much for them as they were defeated by Bexley 47-41. Bex- ley dropped the remaining league games to Grandview, Upper Arlington, and Whitehall. Tournament play saw the Lion cagers de- feat Marion-Franklin 57-44. In the next round, Bexley lost to Grove City 53-39. At the winter sports banquet in March, members of the basketball team were honored with various awards. Captain Jim Hoyer was selected to the all-CBL first team, and Boger Williamson and Jeff Schmidt received honor- able mention. Rick Harbold received recogni- tion as the most improved player, Roger Wil- liamson was given credit for the most re- bounds, Jeff Schmidt for the most free throws, and Jim Hoyer received the most valuable player award. Wrestling Ably captained by Larry Lieberman and Alan Glas, this year’s wrestling team compiled the best record in the history of Bexley High School as it won nine matches and lost only three. The team started the year with an annihilation of Newark, 44-5. It then had equally impressive victories over Grandview and Mansfield Madison. Next it lost a close match to eventual District Champion Franklin Heights. In the next match, Bexley eked out a win 22-21 over Pleasant View. The team then beat Arlington’s wrestling squad 23-19, the first wrestling victory over Arlington in the team’s six year history. Bexley next toppled a powerful University team 21-19 and crushed Hilliard’s 31-6. After a 24-9 loss to East, Bexley grapplers won a 27-16 victory over Groveport. Fol- lowing a heartbreaking 15-18 loss to Whitehall, the team rebounded and beat Walnut Ridge 35-6. The team’s fine record speaks well of Coach Ten- walde, who did an excellent job this year. Mr. W eis served as tennis coach again this year and witnessed his team in three shutout victories over Newark, Chillicothe, and Ports- mouth. Returning lettermen formed the nucleus of this year’s team. They were captain Godofsky, foe! Slaven, Jeff Schmidt, Mark Engelman, Dan Dick, and Dave Frasch. Coach Carlton Smith’s golf team must try to uphold the high honors gained by last year’s team. Captain Roger Gleckler and Bob Peterson returned from last year’s District Champion team, with strong support expected from Woody Woodworth. The golf team took its annual trip south this spring and was able to view the P.G.A. Masters’ tournament. Bexley began the season with two impressive wins over Whitehall, each by the same score of IOV2 to 5V2. At midseason the prospects were very bright. Front row: Joel Brandt, Tim Greiner, Bill Salt, Doug Squeo, Jim Hoyer, Mark Lackritz, Walt Wallace, Jeff McClelland, John Schmidt. Baseball Bexley’s baseball team had bright prospects this year. Captain Joel Brandt, who has been All-CBL for three years, was considered a likely choice for All-Ohio. He was backed up by returning lettermen Jim Hoyer, Jeff McClelland, John Schmidt, and Walter Wallace. Outstanding new prospects were Bill Salt, Doug Squeo, Marc Lackritz, and Jim Greiner. Brandt’s pitching was supplemented by that of Mike Myers and Sam Geldis. At mid-season Bexley’s diamond corps had a three and three record. Bexley had beaten Dela- ware and Mt. Vernon and had split a double header with Bishop Hartley. They had lost to Lancaster and Linden McKinley. Inclement weather could destroy Bexley’s hopes by having them overwork their pitching staff. Buck row: Dick Montgomery, Bill Meeks, John Strocfer, Bob Barr, Pete Snyder, Woody Jones, Bob Simcox, Coach Dejong. Many lettermen returned in a wide diversity of events. Although hampered by loss of Rick Mauger to injuries, the track team began with impressive victories. The six opening meets saw the cinder- men scoring over seventy points per meet while crushing Brookhaven, Grandview, Delaware, Eishop Hartley, Circleville, and Aquinas and St. Charles in a triangular meet. Rick Harbold broke a long-standing school pole vault record early in the season. Outstand- ing performances were also turned in by Jay Maupin and Van Snider, as well as by Captain Williamson. Although strong opposition was presented by Worthington and Arlington, Bexley’s trackmen set their goals high for this year. Standing: Mgr. Bexley diver at the Academy pool. Swimming Bexley’s swimming team compiled a six won six lost record this year. Even so, Coach Owen noted the opposition was extremely strong this year and was pleased with his team’s record. Bexley lost its first meet in a triangular clash with Academy and Newark. The Lions splashed back, though, to dunk Aquinas 66 to 27. After suffering a 60-35 defeat at the hands of Newark, the Tankers beat Whetstone 61-34. Bexley then lost to Greenfield 39-56 but defeated St. Charles 59-36. After successive losses to Columbus Academy, 62-33, and Arlington 69-26, the Lion swimmers defeated Ashland 52-43, St. Charles 60-35, and Aquinas 61-36. The seasons finale was a close loss to Worthington 51-43. At the Winter Sports Banquet, it was noted that Coach Owen’s team placed fifth in the Central Ohio Swim League, the City Relays, and the Central District. Captains Jeff Mc- Clelland and Mark Paine received four and three year trophies respectively. Jeff and Mark also announced that next years captains would be Bob Rosel and Bob Berlin. Members of the Girls’ Athletic Club started this year’s schedule with a United Nations of Sports rushing party. Girls dressed in cos- tumes of many countries assembled at the school for an evening of songs, food, and games. In the fall of the year, the GAC mem- bers sold football concessions and sponsored the annual Hockey Night. A “Mad Hatter” dance with wild hats provided an evening of fun after a football game. The girls collected toys at Christmas time to give to Franklin Village. The senior girls’ varsity basketball team won Class Night, as Marilyn Kurtz was crowned 1963 Sports Queen. The Girls’ Athletic Club is in charge of all intra-mural sports activities at Bexley. Home- room volleyball and girls’ and boys’ basketball teams vied for the school championship under the direction of this club. At the annual GAC Banquet in May, this year’s officers, Barbara Smith, president; Cheri Papier, vice-president; Paula Young, secretary; Dody Schwartz, treasurer; and Susie Wolman, intra-mural manager, installed the newly elected officers.
