Under the leadership of Barry Kayne, president; Jack Meyer, vice- president; Meg McGavran, secretary-treasurer; and Mr. Tipton, advisor, the council considered such business as the “lost and found’’ department, noon hour procedure, and the use of hall pos- ters. The Homecoming Game and Homecoming Dance were sponsored by the organization in the fall. Members did all the planning and decorating for the evening, and the event was a big success. The popcorn machine and apple machine, both bought by the council, were under the oper- ation of council members. Popcorn was made and sold at football and basketball games as well as at other presentations at the school. The apple machine, too, proved to be a worthy investment. Many students greeted the new year at the New Year’s Eve Dance sponsored by the Stu- dent Council and held at the Jeffrey Mansion. Again, all arrangements were made by the council. Bexley was proud to be so well represented in this larger organization. Other activities of the council included ratifying three club constitutions, acting as host to five foreign exchange students for one day, and assisting in the debate tournament held at Bexley. In addition, the council lent support to the five mill levy bond issue. Student Council offers the opportunity for representatives of the student body to work with the faculty in solving student-life situations. The students at Bexley feel fortunate in having such an organization. National Honor Society On March 15, twenty-eight new mem- bers were inducted into the National Honor Society. Juniors in the upper sixth of their class and seniors in the upper third of their class are eligible for election. Students are considered on the basis of leadership, scholarship, character, and service. Each person elected to the society has excelled in each of the four principles. Mrs. Antoinette Barr, sponsor of the society, planned the ceremony in con- junction with the seniors who became members as juniors. Short speeches were made concerning character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The symbol and history of the society as well as a few words by Mrs. Barr and Mr. Jones were included in the ceremony. Surprise, Ed,” says Meg. Quill and Scroll Quill and Scroll, the international journal- istic society, each year recognizes those mem- bers of the BEXLEO and TORCH staffs who have shown interest in their work on the publications. To be eligible for membership in the society, one must be maintaining a current “B” average and be recommended by his advisor. At this year’s Journalism Banquet twenty-nine from the two staffs were inducted into this honorary society. Thespian Society National Thespian Society was organized at Bexley in 1955 with its chief purpose being to encourage students showing ability and interest in dramatics. Its main function this year was the sponsoring of a dance following the Dramatics Club play, “See How They Run.” Officers for this year were Judy Franz, presi- dent; Linda Franz, vice-president; Peggy Cregg, secretary; Harriet Nalty, treasurer; and Mr. Eliopulos, advisor. During the Christmas season the two clubs combined again to take part in Kinder Key caroling. In addition to participating in various activities sponsored by the Y.M.C.A., the club also supported the annual basketball games—Hi-Y versus Faculty and Hi-Y versus Y-Teens. Leading the club this year were Bill Thomas, president; Richard Dick; vice-presi- dent; Jeff McClelland, secretary-treasurer; and Mr. Tong, advisor. Pep Club Officially made a club this year. Pep Club had many more activities than in the past and had one of the highest attendance records of all the clubs. Included in the activities were the sponsoring of buses to away football and basketball games, the making of sport signs for the boys’ lockers, the teaching of new cheers, and the promotion of school spirit. This year’s Pep Club was under the leader- ship of Mabel Gilbert, president; Carole Smoler, vice-president; Joyce Friedman, secre- tary; Kalitsa Tsitouris, activity chairman; and Miss Robson, advisor. ’ep Club Officers: Mabel Gilbert, Carole Smoler, Kalitsa fsitouris, Joyce Friedman. Under the co-editor- ship of Peggy Gregg and Jack Meyer, each edition provided four pages of human interest and informative articles. Much work is needed to produce a monthly school paper, and this year’s competent staff certainly maintained the high standards set by former staffs. After stories and articles were written, they had to be fit into the columns and proofread. For each edi- tion the printer received a first copy and returned three “galleys” to be corrected by the staff. After all correc- tions had been made, the paper was printed and distributed to the student subscribers. Other positions on the staff included the page editors, Steve Ault, Fahn Zelizer, Rosanne Kanter, and Ron Solove; and the copy editor, Harriet Nalty. Much appreciation goes to the TORCH’s excellent advisor, Mrs. Amos. Her time, cooperation, and experience were timely to the production of the paper. Students at Bexley are certainly proud of both their TORCH and the people who are included in its staff. The quality of the TORCH has again been recognized this year by an All-American rating. BEXLEO Page Eighty-five Aware of the high yearbook standards set for us by former BEXLEO staffs, we, the staff of 1962, have tried to equal and if possible surpass these standards. As in other years we selected a theme which we felt could symbolize school life and be developed through quotations and pictures. The major change in this year’s book is the increased use of informal pictures. The staff felt that informal pictures of school activities give a better picture of student life. To adequately express our thanks to our advisor, Mr. Howell, is not possible. He has devoted so much time and effort to the production of this book that we can only hope he realizes our appreciation. This year’s BEXLEO staff included Margaret Tur- ner, editor; Mary Wulber, associate editor; Lorraine Weber, literary editor; Meg McGavran, senior section; Brian Michaelson, business manager; George Slater, advertising manager; Nancy Kahan, staff secretary and layout assistant; Joan Dunavent and Cheryl Simpson, art editors; and Nancy Calland, Richard Dick, Judy Franz, Linda Franz, Reesa Goldsmith, Barry Kayne, Karen Scheiderer, and Bill Thomas. We enjoyed producing this book for you, the stu- dent body. You helped through your cooperation in the tax stamp drive and the subscription campaign; and it is our hope that as the years go by this book will serve as a remembrance of the wonderful 1961- 1962 school year. Football Under Head Coach Ben Tenwalde, the 1961 Lions experienced a disappointing season, winning two games and losing eight. After starting the season with a 12-8 victory over Logan, the Lions lost a heartbreaker to St. Charles, when the Cardinals scored the winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter after recovering a fumble which ended a long Bexley drive. The following week Bexley trav- eled to Circleville, where they lost a hard- fought game to the South-Central Ohio League champs 12-6. In the Lions’ first CBL game, they were blanked by Grandview’s Bob- cats 14-0. Although outscoring Arlington 6-3 in the second half, Bexley lost to the future CBL champs 22-6. Whitehall’s highly favored Rams came to Bexley the next week and left with a 20-6 victory over the Lions. At Worth- ington everything went wrong and a strong Cardinal team overpowered the Lions 36-0. CBL play brought six successive losses to Whitehall, Worthington, Mt. Vernon, Urbana, West, and Delaware. The Lions finally battled out a 52-50 win over Grand- view. Upper Arlington, the next opponent, was victorious 60-31. The next night, however, Bexley won over North High on a last second shot by Jim Hoyer. Bexley’s second round of CBL competition started with losses to Whitehall, Worthington, | Mt. Vernon, and Urbana. The next week the Lions played their best game of the year, Basketball defeating Delaware 55-45. The season’s last win was over Grandview 55-51. Captain Calvin Hamrick was the only re- turning starter from last year’s squad. The other starting positions were filled by juniors Jim Hoyer, Jeff Berlin, and Roger Williamson and sophomore Jeff Schmidt. Seniors John Moriarty and Rick Culbertson provided bench strength, especially in the rebounding depart- ment. Junior Joel Brandt contributed support in the back court. Hoyer, the team’s leading scorer and cap- tain-elect for next year, was named to the all-CBL second team, while Captain Hamrick received Honorable Mention. Swimming Led by Coach Russ Owens and co-captains Jeff Paine and George Slater, Bexley’s 1962 swimming team enjoyed a very successful season, winding up with a 9-2 record. In the season’s first meet the Lions defeated Worthington by a score of 55-30. Bexley’s next opponent was Aquinas, which offered little resistance in losing 58-28. Bishop Hart- ley was the next victim, this time by a 60-26 verdict. Greenfield McClain was defeated 44- 32, but in their next meet the Lions just squeezed out a 49-46 victory over Ashland. St. Charles was downed 55-31, and then Bex- ley polished off Greenfield McClain for the second time, 48-38. The Lions carried a seven game winning streak into the Academy meet, but had it broken by a 49-37 score. Five new school records were established this season, two by Co-captain Jeff Paine. After breaking both the 400-yard (a new event this year) and the 200-yard freestyle record several times during the regular season, Paine Coach Russ Owen checks the times of co-captains Jeff broke them both for the last time in the Central District Meet. His times of 4:35.2 in the 400-yard, and 2:04.1 in the 200-yard enabled him to become the meet’s only double winner, and receive the Outstanding Swimmer award. Bexley finished third in the meet, be- hind Upper Arlington and Academy. Barry Mellman broke the record for his specialty, the 100-yard breast stroke, several times dur- ing the season, the final time being a 1:08.3 which enabled him to finish fifth in the state meet. In the City Relays a new standard was set in the 200-yard medley relay by Mellman, sophomore Gary Olander, and juniors Jeff McClelland and Mark Paine when they had a time of 1:54.3. McClelland, Co-captain George Slater, sophomore Tom Leukart, and senior Scott McElroy set a 200-yard freestyle relay record of 1:40.3 in the state meet. At the Winter Sports Banquet on March 12, Jeff McClelland and Mark Paine were named as Co-captains of the 1963 squad. On your mark, get set, swim! G. Olander, M. Paine, B. Mellman, T. Leukart, J. Wrestling Despite the handicap brought about by losing Co-captain Dick Golden, who was seri- ously injured in a match against Hilliards, the grapplers compiled a five and seven record and enjoyed the sport’s finest season in its five year history. The matmen opened their season with im- pressive victories over Bishop Hartley and University. They then went to Pleasant View where they were edged out by Pleasant View, 15-24. The Lions came back by overpowering Mansfield Madison 25-20 and beating Watkins Memorial 41-10, but only to lose to a fine Franklin Heights team, 16-23. The fighting matmen then came home and shutout Ohio Blind 24-0. They suffered their biggest defeat by Hilliards. Although losing by only one point, 18-19, they lost Co-captain Golden for the entire season. In completing their season, tthe team was defeated in four out of their last five matches, with the lone victory being over Grandview, 24-19. At the Winter Sports Banquet, the wrestlers received recognition for their outstanding achievements. Larry Lieberman became the first Bexley wrestler to enjoy an undefeated season, district runner-up, and winner of the Most Valuable Wrestler Award. Jerry Robins set the school record for the most pins in one season and Alan Glas had the fastest pin dur- ing the season. Front row: Irv Godofsky, Joel Engelman, Jeff Brandon, Jeff Schmidt, Richard Dick, Mark Engelman, Joel Slaven, Don Alspaugh, Gary Beim. Tennis Golf Coached by Mr. Weis, the tennis team has a promising outlook despite the graduation of lettermen last year. A wide schedule will be played with many schools in addition to the CBL. Three returning lettermen form the nucleus of the team, which will consist of Captain Richard Dick at first singles; Mark Engelman, second singles; Jeff Schmidt, third singles; Dan Dick and Dave Frasch, first doubles; and Jeff Brandon and Joel Engelman or Irv Godofsky and Joel Slaven, second doubles. Impressive victories over Newark, Dela- ware, and Academy have given the Lions a good start toward league supremacy. Bexley’s 1962 golf team, led by Captain Steve Miller, is expected to have excellent chances of winning both leagues in which it competes. Miller and senior Reid Wasserstrom are the only returning lettermen from last year’s squad, which placed high in the state tourna- ment. The other two positions on the four man team are filled by sophomore Roger Gleckler and either sophomore Bob Peterson or sophomore Woody Woodworth. The team participates in both the Central Buckeye League and the Saturday Morning Division of the Greater Columbus League. Front row: Mike Myers, Doug Squeo, Walt Wallace, Bill Woodruff, Joel Brandt, Chris Tsitouris, Steve Rosenthal, Jeff McClelland, Charles Friedenberg. Bexley’s 1962 baseball team has high hopes of winning the Central Buckeye League crown, after finishing second for three years in a row. Coached by Curtis Tong and captained by Ron Clowson, the team is built around a nucleus of returning lettermen. These players are Clowson, first base; Calvin Hamrick, center field and pitcher; Chris Tsitouris, short- stop; Bob Hepps, catcher; Steve Rosenthal, second base; and Joel Brandt, a first team all-CBL pitcher last year. The best new prospects are seniors Jeff Smith and Rick Baseball Culbertson; juniors John Schmidt, Jeff Mc- Clelland, and Jim Hoyer; and sophomore Wally Wallace. This year the Central Buckeye League is more balanced than it has ever been in recent years. According to Coach Tong, Bexley’s chances of capturing the elusive champion- ship are just as good as those of any other team. The biggest factor in the league race will probably be the weather, since most teams more or less rely on one or two pitchers. Postponements will put a strain on pitching staffs and will hurt any team involved. Track This year’s track team, under Coach Owen and Assistant Coach Ridenour, has a promis- ing outlook. Although there are only nine returning lettermen, fine performances are to be expected from many experienced under- classmen. Trackmen for ’62 opened their campaign with six impressive victories over Rosary, Grandview, Circleville, Hartley, Delaware and Reynoldsburg. Rarry Kayne, Sam Rates, and Rick Mauger are standouts in the dash events, while Jim Westwater, Dick Curl, and Rick Harbold have been earning many points in the field events. Among other consistent scorers will be Dick Patton, Van Snider, and Bob Rosel. Although the team is not contemplating a CBL championship, the fine leadership and hard work done by the squad should pay off with many victories over league members. Roundup” rushing party to which the girls came dressed as Wild West characters. “Winter Wonderland” was the theme of the dance sponsored by the club. Also in Decem- ber was the orphan toy project supported along with Y-Teens. ,A.C. One of the big events of every school year is the annual G.A.C. Banquet, and this year was no exception.
