Text from Pages 1 - 158 of the 1961 volume:

the impressions of time contents faculty student life social i ■ m v- m er . m' k Home Life Reflections of childhood will never dim. The golden years of life, they are remembered as years of deepest despair and exultant joy. Nothing went unnoticed; nothing was unimportant. Each new day brought ex- citement and mystery. The world was new and life was wonderful. Precious memories deepen with the years, and, as we reflect on early childhood, may we see the brightness and happiness of a child’s face—a lesson to be learned, that the world still has mysteries to solve and that life still is wonderful. Spiritual Life Ideals are the impressions of life. They form a blue- print for us to follow in order to enjoy a full, rich ex- istence. Ideals are important. They are vital to us; for they are the hopes, the ambitions, and the dreams of the possessor. We must set our own goals, and only we can measure our own success. Our ideals can never be too high, for they will influence us throughout our lives. We can never attain a goal if we will not reach for it. the influence of example . . . Dr. E. D. Forty-eight members make up the Council including class officers, one representative of Student Health Council, home room representatives, the three Council officers, and the defeated candidates for Student Council offices. Six committees are designated to do much of the work. They are Pep Rally, Publicity, Social, Survey, Project, and Buying. Each committee has a financier who makes purchases. The survey committee serves as a clearing house for projects which are brought before the Council. Traditionally, Student Council has taken care of homecoming festivities. The bonfire, the parade, the float contest, and the crowning of the queen were all capably handled again this year. This year Student Council representatives played host to the parents at the annual parent- teacher open house. Also in November a mock presidential election was held. Students at Bexley were not in accordance with national results as the Republicans in the mock election won by a landslide. Billy Graham provided the music for the affair. Other Council projects for the 1960 61 season included a Lost and Found opened every morn- inor snH attended by a Council member. The group also operated a popcorn machine for the school administration. A program of locker inspection was instituted by Student Council for the first time this year. Designed to eliminate lost articles and littered halls, the inspection has proved very suc- cessful. Perhaps the most important project that the Council undertook was the revision of the student handbook, the Lion Life. Members of the Torch staff and Student Council officers collaborated on the revision which will be printed in time for the opening of school in the fall. Officers responsible for Council leadership were president, Sam McGavran; vice-president, Steve DeVoe; secretary-treasurer, Sue Yardley; and advisor, Mr. H. V. Tipton. Student Health Council Student Health Council, an organization dedi- cated to the improvement of health conditions in our school, had a very successful year. In the annual Red Cross and United Appeals Drives Bexley contributed the most money in its history and exceded its quota by thirty dollars. Health Council membership consists of two boys and two girls from each class who are elected as freshmen and serve for four years. This year’s officers were Bill Betz, president; Bob Self, vice-president; and Margie Turner, secretary-treasurer. Miss Love and Mrs. Manly, school nurse, served as advisors. First Aid For the first time in the history of Bexley, Student Health Council sponsored a Red Cross First Aid program. Under the guidance of Cap- tain Markham of the Whitehall Fire Depart- ment, fifteen students received their First Aid certificates. Classes were held for ten consecutive weeks on Thursdays from four to five and included a program of lectures, discussions, movies, and practical work. The course is to be continued next year with the hope that the student body will take an even greater interest than it did this year. Standing: Bill Betz, Bob Self, Bruce Siegel, Buddy Tennebaum. Page Seventy-two As a reflection of student life and activities, the TORCH has maintained its standard of ex- cellence again this year. Led by co-editors, Karen Mercer and Jeff Schwartz, the staff in- stituted several new ideas. The “Alumni on Campus” series, the extensive articles on testing and college preparation, and the first pictorial essay in the history of the TORCH by David Japikse and Karen Mercer were the highlights of the season. In addition, the new staff attempted to up- hold the prestige which previous staffs have gained for the TORCH. News Editor, Jeri Lazear, covered the news of student activities. The humor of “Stine’s Line,” written by Bob Stine, consistently lightened up the second page, while Marcia Heffernan tied together the news and features of the third page. Jack Meyer, as sports editor, covered the entire Lion athletic scene. The business staff, consisting of Mike Fried- man, Lynne Grundstein, and Don Ruben, en- abled the TORCH to have its most successful fiscal year by selling more subscriptions and advertising than ever before and by sponsoring the TORCH Valentine Dance and the sale of the Dial-A-Date. Although the TORCH had the potential for a top-notch newspaper, its final product would have been impossible without the guidance and training of its advisor, Mrs. Sara Amos. Bexleo Throughout its years of publication the BEXLEO has maintained a fine reputation. We, the staff of 1961, chose our theme embodying the ideas of reflections and impressions because we believe that these two concepts are indeed a memorable part of school life. While carrying out our theme we have tried to produce an- other superior yearbook equal in quality to the books of previous years. The purpose of this yearbook is to present you, the student body, the many impressions and experiences reflected during your high school years. With a central idea as a starting point we have worked throughout the year ex- perimenting and thereby initiating new ideas. Our co-editors are Betty Harris and John Strahm; literary editor, Ellen Ziskind; art editor, Terry Thall; business manager, Fred Barry; and advertising manager, Andy Tsitouris. We are deeply indebted to our advisor and friend, Mr. Ralph M. Howell, who through his concern and time-consuming efforts, has proved to be an invaluable counselor to our staff. This is your BEXLEO it reflects your support through the tax stamp drives and through the subscription campaign. We hope that you will enjoy this book as much as we have enjoyed producing it for you. Page Seventy-four Choir One of the most active and talented organizations in our school is the choir, under the direction of Mr. C. Robert Myers. Meeting the fourth period every day and giving ten to fifteen performances each year certainly makes the choir a busy group. First on the choir’s schedule was the annual Parents’ Night Rehearsal. A typical practice, to which all parents were invited, was held in the evening. The choir sang several numbers—one of which was entirely new— in order that the parents might see how the choir is conducted. November was filled with many engagements. The girls’ ensemble entertained at a dance and the entire choir sang at the Thanksgiving as- sembly. The Christmas season immediately followed. Page Seventy-five Concert Bexley's Marching Forty-eight displayed its excellence again this year during performances at the football games. In preparation for the season, the band began practices two weeks be- fore school. As a result they were able to pro- vide the audiences with delightful music and intricate routines. After the football season ended, the band demonstrated its versatility by reorganizing into a concert band with sixty-seven members. This change required a complete change in tech- niques. Concert Band prepared many enjoyable concerts for the community. The first of these programs was the annual Christmas concert held in the Bexley High Auditorium. Also during the winter months the band gave several assemblies for students in the Bexley School System. Bexley High School, Bexley Junior High School, and Cassingham. Elemen- tary School were all entertained by the excellent musical programs. Band Director: Mr. William Rost Page Seventy-six Back row: Dan Moore, Barbara Rose, John Johnston. In addition to these shows Concert Band played at the Athletic Awards Assembly and presented a spring concert that was very well received. On May 5 the annual band awards banquet was held at the Seneca Hotel. After dinner, awards were bestowed on deserving members, and the rest of the evening band members spent dancing and socializing. As a climax to a busy year, Concert Band played at commencement. For its successful and active season, the band is greatly indebted to Mr. Rost for his untiring efforts and invaluable advice. Mr. Jones and Mrs. Barr congratulate John Strahm. From one editor to another Betty taps Margy On March 23, twenty-nine new members, nineteen seniors and ten juniors, were inducted into the National Honor Society. Juniors in the upper sixth of their class and seniors in the upper third of their class are eligible for election. Students are judged on the basis of character, scholar- ship, leadership, and service. Each person inducted into the society has demonstrated these qualifications. In conjunction with Mrs. Barr, sponsor of the group, this year’s seniors who became members as juniors planned the ceremonies. Character, scholarship, leader- ship, and service were presented by these students as being essential to success in life. The symbol of the Society, the history of its foundation, and a few chosen remarts by Mr. Jones and Mrs. Barr concluded the cere- mony. Induction into the National Honor Society is considered to be the highest honor that can be received at Bexley. During the year the members played French charades, listened to a speech given by Mona Hirris on Franco-Egyptian customs, and partici- pated in the annual city-wide French banquet held at the Ohio Union on February 21. The project committee sent a scrapbook of a day in Bexley High to a school in France. In the spring the club joined Spanish Club for a picnic to close its enjoyable year. Fred Barry presides over Latin Club meeting Latin Club Latin Club, with leadership provided by Fred Barry, president; Melissa Blanton, vice-president; Judy Franz, secretary; and Fahn Zelizer, treas- urer; enjoyed a very successful year of activities. Miss Opal Wylie served as advisor. Freshmen with an “A” average in Latin for the first semester were inducted into Latin Club. This induction enlarged the total membership of the club considerably. The Latin Club Dance was one of the most successful in the history of the club. Janus, the god of good beginnings, served as the main element in the decorations. As in past years the Roman banquet was held in May. Its success was attributed to the hard work of the committee chairmen. By studying ancient and modern Roman life, the club served to broaden the intellectual appreciation of its members. In the ninth game of the season, the Lions met the C.B.L. champion, unbeaten Urbana, and went down before the Hillclimbers, 30-14. The season ended on a satisfying note with a 14-0 victory over Dela- ware. The 1960 Lions seems to deserve the title of a “one half” ball club, but it may be said for them that they never quit and they always played clean football. At the football banquet, November 22, the Varsity and Reserve teams were honored and letters were presented to the members of the playing Varsity. The highlights of the ban- quet were the presentation of the Fred Medors Award to Jim Wacker and the induction of Larry Herwald and Jim Wacker into the Shoulder Pad Club. The Lions placed Jim Wacker on the C.B.L. team and Chris Tsitouris, Terry Lane, Jerry Mechling, Jim Westwater, Bill Goldberg, and Dave Helmick were given honorable mention. Mechling and Wacker also made first team hon- orable mention on the Central District honorary team. Basketball In spite of the fact that the 1960-61 Lions finished with a losing 7-10 record, they displayed a great deal of basketball ability in a league which was represented in the Central District Finals by Grandview and in the State Finals by Urbana. Captain Jerry Mechling and Frank Kass pro- vided most of the scoring punch, aided at times by Larry Ritter, Steve Tuckerman, and Steve DeVoe. Ritter and DeVoe were also mainstays in the rebounding department. After losing the first game ever in the new gym to Grove City, the Lions, coached by “Lefty” Swinehart, rebounded to down peren- nial rival, St. Charles for their first victory of the season. The Lions then lost to Arlington after leading for three quarters. In the following two games, Bexley won over Whitehall and Worthington, coming from behind by thirteen points to conquer the Cardinals. The Lions lost to West and Urbana but came back to crush Delaware, 60-27, only to bow to Grand- view in a rough battle the next night. Bexley then lost three games in a row to Arlington, Whitehall, and Worthington, as the second round of C.B.L. play began. On the following weekend, the Lion cagers beat Mt. Vernon and Delaware. In their next game at Urbana, Bexley gave the League champion and State finalist a battle, finally losing by eleven points, one of Urbanas’ smallest winning margins of the regu- lar season. Bexley broke even in the last two games, losing to Grandview and winning over Mt. Vernon in the last regular season game. Though the team was handicapped at times by the illnesses of Jerry Mechling and Steve DeVoe, the Lions turned in a creditable record in a very tough league. For this reason, Lefty” Swinehart is to be complimented on his fine coaching. Frank Kass, the team's leading scorer, was rewarded with a berth on the second string ALL-C.B.L,, while Jerry Mechling received Monorable Mention. Bexley’s tankers finished third in the Central District Meet behind Upper Arlington and Academy. Ten men qualified for the State Meet although none reached the finals. Les Levitt captured the only first for the Lions in the District with a time of 1:07 in the 100 yard butterfly. In winning six of nine meets, Coach Russell Owen’s team broke three school records. Barry Mellman, Jeff Paine, and the Medley Relay team were among the record breakers. Wrestling The Bexley wrestling team in its fourth year had the largest schedule, IB matches, in its his- tory. Led by co-captains Ivan Romanoff and Bill Goldberg, the wrestlers compiled a four and nine record with victories over University, East, Ohio State School for the Blind, and West. Coached by Ben Tenwalde, the team stimu- lated more interest on the part of the student body than ever before. At the Winter Sports Banquet, it was an- nounced that Bill Goldberg was the Most Valu- able Wrestler and that Larry Lieberman and Dick Golden would lead the 1961-62 wrestling team. Track With the loss of ten lettermen through gradu- ation, Bexley’s track team faced a major re- building job this year. Coach Russ Owen had only four lettermen returning from last year’s squad. Three seniors were Terry Lane, Dick Stevens, and Bill Goldberg, in addition to sopho- more Rick Mauger. The greatly improved underclassmen helped fill Bexley's major void which was in the dis- tance events. The track squad was also aided by an outstanding group of freshmen, among them Richard Patton, Van Snider, Dave Parker, Jay Maupin, and Richard Harbold. Because of the experience the underclassmen are gaining this year, Coach Owen is able to look forward to several very promising teams in the future. Durham dumps the discus. Terry Lane and Sam Bates warm up. I Standing: Coach Curt Tong, Mgrs. Steve Haas, Steve Malloy, Bernie Yavitch. Front row: Jeff Zettler, Ronnie Dolinger, David Helmick, Steve Tuckerman, Tom Elsass, John Strahm, Jerry Mechling, Bill Hoyer. Baseball This year, the baseball team under the expert guidance of Curtis Tong now in his second year as a coach, has high hopes of taking the C.B.L. crown this season. The team spent the entire spring vacation in Charleston, South Carolina, where they were able to get in much pre-season practice, thus putting them one jump ahead of the other teams in the league. Each of the members of the team who took part in the spring training helped finance the trip with a personal, but very reasonable contribution; Mr. William B. Hoyer, who has two sons on the squad, financed the transportation. Several lettermen returned from last season to strengthen this year’s team. They are Tom Elsass, captain; Joel Brandt; Calvin Hamrick; Steve Tuckerman; Chris Tsitouris; Ron Clow- son; Steve Rosenthal; and Bernie Yavitch, man- ager. The team will also derive valuable assist- ance from its newest member, an automatic pitching machine which this year’s Senior Class donated to the school. The machine is designed to pitch batting practice at an incredible accuracy of 98%, and should be of great benefit to the squad. Standing: Steve Haas, Mgr., Steve Malloy, Mgr. Smith, Todd Barkan, Gary Erlenbach, Herb Wasserstrom, Bill MacDonald, Bob Peterson, Woody Woodworth, Barry Thall, Grant Price. Front row: Roger Gleckler, Reid Wasserstrom, Steve DeVoe, Wayne Weld, Steve Miller, Dick Frankel. Golf The 1961 golf team, coached by Carlton Smith, sports a roster of four returning letter- men. They are Wayne Weld, captain, Steve DeVoe, two year veteran, and juniors Reid Wasserstrom and Steve Miller. Junior Dick Frankel and freshman Roger Gleckler are also expected to aid the team. The four lettermen, accompanied by Coach Smith, toured several southeastern states during spring vacation and picked up valuable experience that they hope will carry them to the State High School Tour- nament. Tennis The tennis picture at Bexley for the 1960-61 season is bright. The team has six returning lettermen and a promising crop of underclassmen for new Coach, Larry Metz. Returning letter- men include four seniors. They are Andy Tsi- touris, Mike Friedman, Sam McGavran, and David Addison, while Richard Dick is the lone junior. The season consists of ten C.B.L. matches and extra pairings with St. Charles and Co- lumbus Academy in addition to the district event late in the season. Girls’ Sports Girls’ sports are for all at Bexley and are treated so by the girls, who do not hesitate to participate in them. There are seventeen intra- mural sports between individuals, homerooms, and classes. For those girls who are more highly skilled, the program offers interscholastic sports as well as intramural sports. Hockey, basketball, tennis, and golf constitute the interscholastic or varsity sports that are offered. In addition to these sports, table tennis and badminton are played during the noon hour as well as checkers and darts. Girls who are physi- cally restricted find that there is also a program for them. Hockey and basketball have always been the most popular and competitive sports at Bexley. The juniors captured the hockey night title in the annual competition while the seniors main- tained their three-year title by defeating the contending junior team at the annual class night competition. For those interested in learning a specific skill, classes in golf and horseback riding are offered for a nominal fee. Sportsheads for golf are Janie Gumble and Carol Monroe. Horseback riding sportsheads are Lona Spencer and Ros- anne Kanter. For those who like to be outdoors a great deal, baseball and tennis fill the bill by providing good exercise under spring skies. Under the leadership of the various sports- heads, the girls’ athletic program is able to pro- vide a year of excitement and stimulation for all interested girls.
