The TORCH is no exception in this regard. Under the leadership of Editor Jack Dickey and Assistant Editor Gayle Caplan, it strove to reflect the ideas of the students through editorials on current issues. Under the guidance of page editors Glenda Schottcn- stein, Susan Ross, and Karen Mercer, the TORCH pre- sented better news coverage and livelier features. eff Schwartz kept Bexleyites up to date with a comp ete sports picture. Irene Humphrey, Cirls' S orts Editor, helped to push feminine enthusiasts into tile limelight. To pay for the ten issues published, the TORCH sold many new advertisements. The staff also published the Dial-A-Date, student address book, complete with yellow pages, and sponsored two dances. In addition, TORCH staff members found time to participate in various work- shops and competitions. During the summer eight mem- bers attended a journalism institute at Indiana Univer- sity, where they won sixteen awards. They also took part in a workshop sponsored by the Central Ohio High School Press Club and a Journalism Association of Ohio competition. Both times their efforts were fruitful. Much of the real applause for the success of the TORCH should go to Mrs. Sara Amos, faculty advisor. Without her patience and understanding, the TORCH would not have attained the position which it now maintains. Page Three d row: Ralph M. Bexleo With the fine reputation of previous BEXLEOS be- fore us, we, the staff of 1960, have endeavored to main- tain this high level of quality. Realizing the effort and devotion of our predecessors, we have tried to emulate them in giving you another superior yearbook. Working together throughout the year we have in- itiated many new ideas, such as different layouts and unique divider pages, in the hope that you, the student body, will find this an exciting, more interesting BEX- LEO. Like previous staffs, we have thought from the first that a central idea or theme is the starting point for a well planned book. Our theme was chosen because we believe it has a real significance in itself and because it is applicable to the life of our school. We arc deeply grateful to Mr. Ralph Howell, who through his consideration and painstaking labor has been not only an invaluable advisor but a true friend. His photographic skill has provided many of the beau- tiful pictures which now grace this book. The staff is indeed indebted. This is your BEXLEOQ you have supported it through your subscriptions and through our tax stamp drives. We hope that you will enjoy this book as much as we have enjoyed producing it for you. -sul K.21fg'w if aa 1 a n Standing: Barbara Dulfey, Gail Dunavent. Seated: Linda Weissenbach, Kathie Kienzle. Freshman Class Summer months were full of vacation and swimming pool How- ever, the freshmen did take time to realize that from here on the emphasis would he on accomplishment and success, rather than on fun alone. On june 8, 1959, they officially became the Class of 1963. With several promis- ing athletes and some very talented students this freshman class promises to he a very successful one. Although the third floor did not get decorated for Christmas until Monday morning, December 21, at 7:00 AM., the fresh- men do have several worthy ideas for future money-making projects. Truly, the carefreeness and immaturity of summer is vanishing, as the freshmen move on to accept greater responsibilities. With these plans came the realization that this class had become a promising and essential part of Bexley High School. In addition to the established methods of collecting class dues and selling baseball-track con- cessions, this class also sold basketball concessions at two games and spon- sored a special Spring project. The sophomores were also noteworthy along the lines of scholarship, athletic ability, and special talent. With several boys in starting positions on various teams and with some musically capable students displaying their skills in the talent show and musical this year, this class seems well on its way to becoming one of the outstanding classes of Bexley High. Leaders of the sophomore class were loel Engelman, president, lack Nleyer, vice-president, and Ioan Schlezinger, secretary-treasurer. It is composed of forty-two members, including class officers, the Student Health Council president, Chief Justice of Student Court, homeroom representatives, and three Student Council oflicers. The Council's main objectives are to solve important problems and to account for the welfare of the students as well as of the school. Since there is much to be accomplished every year, each representative is assigned to one of the five designated committees, which are Pep Prally, Publicity, Social Survey, Project, and Buying. A financier is appointed in each group to handle all money transactions. Student Council assisted the faculty during the freshman orientation period. Soon afterwards Homecoming festivities began. The Project Committee made arrangements for the traditional bonfire, the introduction of the queen, the parade, and the float contest. The Survey Committee was responsible for concessions at the football game, and the Social Committee planned the dance that concluded the exciting evening. ln November the Council planned Halloween dance in conjunction with the city Recreation Department. Homeroom representatives headed a school-wide collection of canned goods for needy families at Christmas whil class vice-presidents and alternates were busy decorating the halls with Christmas decorations. The New Year's Ev dance at the Jeffrey Mansion was also a Council project. Honor study halls, begun last year after a suggestion by the Council, were continued successfully this year o a wider scale. Officers responsible for Council leadership were Fred Mann, president, Pton Culbertson, vice-president, Jud High, secretary-treasurer, and Harold Tipton, faculty advisor. Ex costumes, outstanding make-up, and fine acting were but a few of the factors responsible for the success of the tw Japanese saga. In December the entire club motored to Otterbein University to see The Diary of Anne Franke. Other ii ing programs included attending a clinic at Ghio State University and witnessing the dress rehearsal of Lute presented by the Players' Club. Other annual projects included Kinder Key Caroling and Career Day, which proved to be one of most interesting programs. Y-Teens crowded their social calendar with such events as a Spaghetti Dinner in March, the Annual Hawkins Dance, the Y-Teen weekend camping trip, and the Motheris Day Tea in May. Members took part in charitable drives such as the Lily Parade and Links. Though they won less than half of their games the Lions provided some stiff competition for several league leaders proving that they were a better team than their record shows. Captain Sam lVlcCandlish and Tom Tussing provided most of the scoring strength with excellent help from lim Haunty in the rebounding department. Jerry Mechling, Frank Eigerman, Sandy Pollock, and Bill Rader all displayed outstanding skill in guard positions. Following a defeat at the hands of Washington Court House in the season opener, Coach Lefty,' Swinehart's cagers edged St. Charles 38-37 in one of the season's thrillers. The Lions lost their next three giving Grandview and Arlington a tough battle but offering little opposition to an alert Whitehall Five. Determined to remain in the CBL race, Bexley won three in a row from Worthington, West, and Mt. Vernon. The Lions succumbed to mighty Urbana and were ni ped by Delaware 45-43 the following night. The next week Bexley travelled to Grandview to capture their fifth win which was followed by dual losses to Arlington and Whitehall. The season ended with triumphs over Worthington and Delaware and losses to lVlt. Vernon and champion Urbana. Coach Lefty Swinehart did a fine job with this year's team. Captain Sam McCandlish must also be mended for his sixth place position in CBL individual scoring and his outstanding contributions in every game. Though our Lions failed to capture the CBL crown or even a high position in the league, they exhibited the sportsmanship and sense of fair play which characterizes true champions. Choir This year's choir, under the leadership of M Myers, proved to be one of the Finest Bexley h ever had. ln the fall parents of choir members were invite to a rehearsal. The choir presented songs i various stages of development, several which we perfected, several which were fairly well prepare and several which were entirely new to the grou In this manner parents got a better picture of ju what goes on during choir periods and how lo Choir Director: Mr. C. Concert Mr. Rost, the new band director, trained one of the Finest marching and concert bands Bexley has ever known. To develop precision the marching band began long, hard practices before school started. llalf- time entertainment was provided by the band and majorettes at every football game. Following football season, the concert band began practices. They undertook and perfected a variety of pieces and performed them well. ln early December the band marched through the streets of Bexley to the Circle, where they played for the many onlookers awaiting the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting. They also aaecompanied the Choir in the evening Christmas program pre- sented at the high school. ln February the concert band presented a forty- five minute program for the students. In an effort to bring about a better understanding of music Clarinet: Sue Murray, Diane Stropes, Ray McWhorter, Eddie Stein, Holly Partsch, Steve Shkolnik, Barbara Buker, Mike Norris, Sharon Harbold, Nancy Fritsche, Kathy Sheetz, Ann Epstein, Alan Glas, Sheldon Hurwitz. Bass Viol: Cheryl Margulis. B and nd to arouse interest in the band, Mr. Rost pre- eded each piece by a brief explanation of its eaning and style. The director felt that this -vould make the program more interesting. In he Spring a similar concert was given in the eve- ming for parents as well as students. Few people realize how much hard work is re- uircd of band members. Besides the rapid me- orization of pieces and the natural skill which is volvcd, members devote further time to money- aking efforts, This year's small blue and white ushions imprinted with the letter B were sold at -ootball games to relieve the uncomfortableness of lard bleachers. This year's ofhcers were Bill Rogers, president, ob Edmister, vice-president, and Linda Ohmer, cretary-treasurer. Mr. Rost must certainly be commended for his xcellent supervision and guidance. Fine perfonnances are also expected to be turned in by Calvin I-larnrick and Howie Schlezinger. Bexley sackers at present are not hindered by injuries, as they were last season. Coach Curtis Tong, in his I-irst year at Bexley, predicts fine things for his team. Bexley, Grandview, and Arlington are expected to give defending champion Mt. Track Coach Russ Owen has set his sights on the Central Buckeye League crown this spring for his track team. Chief opposition will be provided by ever-powerful Upper Arlington and Wortliington. Mr. Owen has high hopes, however, for his thirteen returning lettermen. Despite the loss of Larry Kerr, Karl Kumler, Mike Hardesty, and Dick Nafsgcr, there are many events in which Lion trackmen will excel. Great things are expected from Captain Tom Tussing, who last year tied the school record in the 880-yard run, and from john Otfenbcrg in the mile run. Other consistent scorers will probably be Frank Eiferman and Dick Morrow. d row: Roger VVilliamson, George Slater, Jerry Anthony, Jim Hunter, John Annbruster, Jim Kellogg, Tom Deaton, Bill VVilliams. Also returning is Dave Sansbury, who is a probable starter. Jerry Mechling, in his first year on the is expected to turn in some fine performances also. Other CBL schools lost many starters also, and Coach Smith therefore feels that Bexley's chances are good. Games have been scheduled with Arlington, Delaware, Waterson, Mt.
