Since the high school routines are entirely new to them. the freshmen follow the examples set by the upperclassmen. Ar the begin- ning ol the year, the freshmen start to develop the pattern of their high school life. Throughout the year, they become more and more familiar with high school both academically and socially. As a result, next year they will hegin to he leaders. XVith a great deal of enthusiasm and ingenuity, this years freshmen class selected the theme, Lets crown Leo! for their Hoat in the Homecoming parade and captured first prize. It is made up of forty-one mem- bers, including class oflicers, Student Court, Student Health Council representatives, and the three Student Council oflicers. Problems pertinent to school life are solved here, and new projects are developed. Much of the work is done by committees-committees designated as Pep Rally, Publicity, Social, Survey, Project, and Buying. Each committee has a financier who makes purchases. The Survey committee serves as a clearing house for projects which come to the attention of the Council. Very early in the year, the Council took part in planning the freshman orientation assem- bly. Then came the Homecoming activities, including the dance, the crowning of the Queen, the parade, the float contest, and revival of the bonfire tradition. In November the Council planned a Hallowelen dance at the Ieifrey Mansion in collabo- ration with the city Recreation Department. Many other achievements may be enumerated here. As a service project, each home room representative collected canned food and money to be sent to the South Side Settlement at Christmas. Alternates decorated the halls at Christ- mas time. -, Freshmen C1 Back row: joel Engleman, Dick Rush, Sue Helmick, jim West- water, Jeff Brandon, Grant Price. COUNCIL The Council planned and sponsored the New Years Eve dance at the Ieffrey Mansion. First steps were taken to inaugurate honor study halls on a limited basis, with the hope of expanding the system in future years. Council also investigated the possibility of revising some sections of the student limitations system. The Council served as host to the C.B.L. Council meeting, at which Fred Mann was elected vice-president of the C.B.L. Council. Bexley Council also sent delegates to the Ohio Associa- tion of Student Councils convention and workshop and to Buckeye Boys' State. Last, but certainly not least important of Council activities, was its strong backing of the bond issue and school lexy This activity culminated in the staging of a mock election, in which the student body gave an overwhelmingl favorable vote to both issues. Officers responsible for Council leadership were Fred Shafer, president, Dick N afzger, vice- president, jane Baldwin, secretary-treasurer, and Nlr. Harold Tipton, advisor. National Honor Society Being elected to National Honor Society is a great experience to re- member from oneis high school years. Only six per cent of the juniors and fifteen per cent of the seniors are eligible. In addition, students are considered on the basis of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. This year on March 11 more stu- dents were inducted into the National Honor Society. There were ten juniors and fourteen seniors to receive the honor. Following the formal induction, there was a tea in the foyer of the auditorium for all the new members. Miss Marion Thomas is the sponsor. The opening game proved to be a sign of the good things to come as a Bexley squad defeated St. Charles for the first time since 1950, 35 to 8. The next week saw powerful Logan come to town, only to succumb to the deadly passing of Bob Babbitt by the score of 38 to 30. Bexley posted its first two CBL wins the following two weeks at the expense of Delaware and Crand- view. The Arlington game, expected to be close, quickly turned into a rout as the Lions defeated their archrival 42 to 0. After defeating White- hall in the F og Bowlf, Bexley returned home to host Worthington before an overflow home- coming crowd. Although winning 14 to 8, Bex- ley's title hopes received a bad blow as Bob Babbitt was lost for the remainder of the season with a broken leg. After downing a stubborn Mt. Vernon team, Bexley met unbeaten Urbana for the championship. In an extremely close game, Bexley lost 14 to 8 and finished the season as CBL runners-up. Although not winning the championship, Bex- ley received recognition as seven boys, Rick Thatcher, Co-captain Bill Malloy, Mike Hard- esty, Dick Penn, Sam McCandlish, Co-captain Karl Kumler, and Bob Babbitt were named to the All-Central Buckeye League team. In addi- tion, Kumler and Babbitt placed on the All- Central District team, and Babbitt made third team All-State. Bexley can certainly be proud of this year,s football team, a team which never gave up and which came through with its great- est efforts when the chips were down. We may be proud, however, that Urbana's lone defeat in league play was at the hands of Bexley. Coach Smith's Lions led by Captain Dick Nafzger, featured good scoring balance with Sam McCandlish, Tom Tussing, and Nafzger consistently hitting in double figures. Mike Hardesty and Karl Kumler also contributed many outstanding performances, especially in the rebounding department. Dave Brandt, Jim Haunty, and Sandy Pollock provided the main bench strength and were called upon many times to spell the starters. After defeating Washington Court House in the season opener, Bexley rolled over its next five opponents before meeting its first stiff com- petition in Columbus West. A close game all the way, the Lions won it 42 to 40 on Karl Kumler,s last second jump shot. After downing Worth- ington, Bexley suffered its first defeat by losing to Mount Vernon. Bexley won six of its final eight games, losing only to Worthington and to Urbana in the season finale, 49 to 33. In the Central District Tournament Bexley was seeded third and won its first two games over Cardington and Hilliards, before losing to a stubborn VVesterville team 51 to 50. For his excellent play all season long, Dick N afzger repeated as All-Central Buckeye League guard. Next year's captain, Sam McCandlish, was honored on the All C.B.L. second team. The reserves, coached by Dana Swinehart, Hnished their season with 9 and 8 record. Coach Smith can look forward to many fine prospects including freshman Ron Clowson and sopho- mores Frank Eiferman, Steve DeVoe, Jerry Mechling, Steve Tuckerman, and Larry Ritter. just because Bexley did not win the champion- ship does not mean that they did not play like champions. Many fine individual performances were turned in by South, Crall, Stan and George McCloy, and jon and Tom Olander. Tom Olander, a new student this year, broke the existing school records in the 150-yard individual medley and the butterfly. Wrestling Bexley's wrestling team, much improved with a year's experience, posted a 4 and 8 record. Wrestling, still a relatively new sport at Bexley, came into its own this year, attracting increased student interest. Other than regular class work, every girl is given the opportunity to participate in any of the seventeen intramural sports between individuals, homerooms, and classes. For more highly skilled girls, the girls' athletic program offers interscholastic sports, as well as intramural. Tennis, golf, hockey, and basketball constitute the interscholastic or varsity sports that are offered. 4 4 A Barbara Rose, Iill Edmonds, Sharon Wiggins, Norma Kahn, Jule Durschnitt Return by Jill Edmonds and Norma Kahn Mary Lou Carves, Melanie VViseman, Meg McCavran, Debbie Siegel. The intramural tennis sportsheads, jill Edmonds and Norma Kahn, organized a Bound Robin tour- nament which was played in the fall. With the spring came the selection of members for a varsity team, which competed with the teams of other high schools. While the tennis team toiled on the courts, the girls selected for the varsity golf team practiced on the green. Since only a few high school girls play a good game of golf, Cv.A.C. offered an instruction course at the Columbus Country Club for those who were interested. Its programs are many and varied. This year the singing group gave many outstanding per- formances. Early in the fall, the parents of choir members were treated to a rehearsal given by the choir. At the holiday times the choir was especially busy, singing at the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter assemblies. The cold weather of Decem- ber did not prevent the choir from signing its Christmas Concert C Robert Myers Girls' Ensemble: Joan Williams, Judy Bone, Mary Orr, Barbara Daines, Carol Davis, Jean Wil- loughby, Becky Riggs, Judy Jones, Jane Baldwin. The band began to practice for the marching season about a week before the school year began. Under the direction of Mr. john Maza- rak, this yearis marching band was one of Bex- leyis finest. After the football season ended, the band demonstrated its versatility by changing to a concert band. This change required a complete change in technique. With the choir, the band participated in the annual Christmas concert, and also played for the tree lighting ceremony at the Circle. On April 3 the band gave a very enjoyable spring concert in the auditorium. When the State Music Concert was held at Bex- ley, band members participated and also helped Mr. Mazarak by being runners and typists for l .. The light from the Torch has been unusually brilliant this year. Each issue has reflected the pulse of the stu- dent body right down to the latest gripe, the most current bits of humor, the newest happen- ' ings Between Bells , and the most recent sports heroes. Among the projects of the Torch for financial ' support of the publication was the usual Dial-a- Date, Bexley High School's version of the tele- phone directory-including the yellow pagesf, A Dial-a-Date received unexpected publicity in the New York Times. Editor Mary Orr was instrumental in bringing additional prestige to 4 the Torch by virtue of her article on Dial-a-Date when it appeared in the Ohio State journal and was broadcast over the Associated Press wires. - Another Torch-sponsored fund raising project was a Valentine's dance. But as if to prove that not all of their thoughts ran in mercenary A channels, Torch staff members also sponsored A the Athlete of the Year Award. For each issue the Editor has extracted from each staff member his fair contribution, and the paper has achieved balance and dignity through Ti1DkEdif0fSf 106 Schofer, Barbara Kanter, Doug the understanding, patience, and helpful guid- F ec ner' Mary Orr ance of Mrs. Sara Amos, the faculty advisor.
