Student Council The 1954--55 Bexley High School Student Council under the leadership if its officers Jack Betz, president, Pete Halliday, vice-president, and Beverly Fleishman, secretary, and the guid- ance of its advisor, Mr. Tipton, had a very busy and successful year. All meetings were conducted under parliamentary procedure, an innova- tion for the Council which proved very successful. Formal notebooks were kept by all members of the Council and from these all projects were re- ported to the students in homeroom. The Council handled the homecoming festivities and the homecoming dance. It provided a Christmas tree and Christmas decorations in the school halls. Thirty baskets of food for needy families were collected and delivered by the Council. The annual New Year's Eve party was another project which the Council supervised. On the agenda this year was the revision of the Student Court Con- stitution, the revision of the bill on the limitation of student activities, the cre- ation of a committee to monitor the cafeteria and a revamping of the rules governing the homecoming Hoat con- test. The biggest project ever undertaken by a Bexley Student Council was the hosting of the first annual conference of the State Association of Student Councils. Their annual pro- jects are the United Appeals campaign and the Red Cross drive. Student Court With Benjy Zox as Chief Justice, the Student Court completed its sixth successful year. Activities of Student Court included making the parking lot a safe place to drive, writing a com- plete court constitution, helping the students with descipline problems, and helping Student Council with general problems. The second annual conference of the Ohio Association of Student Councils was held Friday and Saturday, April 29 and 30, 1955. Under the able leadership of Jack Betz, general chair- man, Miss Thomas, registrar, Mr. Tipton, advisor, Beverly Fleishman, Pete Halliday, Walter Jeffrey, Harlan Pollock, Marvin Stone, and with the assistance of the Bexley Student Council and the student body, the plans for the convention were carried out. Over four hundred high school students and sponsors from all parts of Ohio came to Bexley to attend. While here, the delegates were provided ,NK , i Discussion! The various aspects of the theme, Train- ing for Leadershipf' were discussed in small groups led by both students and advisors. Several outstanding speakers, including Lieutenant Governor john Brown, Dr. How- ard L. Bevis, Dr. E. D. Jarvis, Honorable William A. Schneider, and Mr. W. W. QWoodyj Hayes addressed the conference. One of the highlights of the two-day con- vention was the banquet and dance held on Friday night at the Ohio State Student Union. Toastmaster Jack Betz welcomed the dele- gates and introduced the guests. Music for the dance which followed the banquet was provided by Chuck Selby and his orchestra. They also sang at Capital University on February 18. One year the choir presents an operetta and on alternating years a variety show. On May 5 and 6 the operetta New Moon was presented. Preceding the game, a picnic was held in honor of all the hard work the band had put forth in producing the half-time shows for Bexley's football games. At the close of the football season the band member's feet were given a rest and the Bexley High School Concert Band was formed. The band participated in two concerts, one in April and one in May. The Football Season Bexley's 1954 football season was a better than average one as the Lions finished with a 7-2 record. In the preview Bexley whipped South 13-O, with Halliday contributing a long T.D. run and Schwartz passing to Halliday for the other touchdown. In the East-Bexley preview game, Rod Dollison blocked a conversion attempt that would have given East a tie and Bexley won 7-6. Halliday ran wild in the Logan game, scoring three touchdowns to give Bexley a 32-6 victory. Bexley, with its eye on the C.B.L. title, dropped the next game to league-leading Urbana by missing all three points after T.D. attempts. M V ,J ' A ag ,Qi ' ' . The Basketball Season Coach Smith's boys finished the 1955 season with a bang, coasting to an undisputed C.B.L. title on an eleven game winning streak, and setting a new single game scoring record of 83 points in the last game. ' After a slow start, the Lions hit their stride in the January 13 Urbana game and were never headed. Jeffrey and company cinched at least a share of the title as they won the revenge game with Mt. Vernon 47-45, the two point margin being Hubert Winebrenner's two foul shots with five seconds left. The Lions took undisputed possession of the title in the Upper Arlington game, the last regular game, in which Captain Walter Jeffrey scored 21 points-the first time he had been in the 2O's. Al Kass finished the season with a total of 183 points, which made him second high scorer in the C.B.L. In the district tournament Bexley was defeated in the semi-finals after disposing of three rivals. The reserves had their share of glory as they won the reserve C.B.L. title. The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Cline, VanBibber, Moody, and Connell set a new City Relay record of 1241.0 for the distance, a record that should stand for quite a while. Ac- cording to the coach, the title will be a toss-up between Bexley and Arlington. This year's team is a well balanced combination, liberally sprinkled with seniors. The team has good depth in the sprints but is having difliculty in taking the field events. Setting the pace for this year's team are Dave Van Blaricon and Dave Spitler in the field events, and Bob Connell and Pete Halliday in the track events: The school record for the 880 relay was smashed by the team of Betz, Ross, Connell, and Halliday with a time of 1134.6 RESERVE SQUAD-Back Row: Dave Zisenwine, Nickey Baird, Gary Bloom, Jim Sebring, Bob Bobbitt, Bill Hampton, Larry Niermeyer. Baseball Although he doesn't expect the 1955 baseball team to take the C.B.L. title, Coach Ben Ten-. walde expects the squad to finish among the league leaders. This year the baseball team is loaded with power and talent, including six returning lettermen. Another factor that should bring success this season is the experience of a large number of the team. Among the diamond stars are pitchers Al Kass and Ted Schwartz, infielders Mike Kil- bourne, Jerry Cooper, Ted Kolva, and Jeff Nacht, and outfielders Bob Doak, Norman Hal- ler, and Bob Carter. With this talent available, the Final standing should be well up in the per- centage column. Girls' Sports at Bexley An excellent athletic program is outlined for the Bexley girl, regardless of her ability. In the intramural area, girls have the opportunity to participate in sports between classes or home- rooms. Teamwork and enjoyment for all are the principal goals of the intramurals. An in- terscholastic program, which is restricted to the better qualified athletes, includes hockey, golf, basketball, and tennis. The enthusiasm and sportsmanship of every girl participating leads to many winning teams and loads of fun. There are fourteen sports in the program from fall to spring They range from team sports G. A. C. SWIMMING SHOW Joan Dye Gene Hugoniot Sandra Nacci such as basketball, hockey, and volleyball to individual sports such as tennis and swimming. From the first day in September to the last day in June, the Bexley girl is kept busy with this outstanding program. This year, on April 19, a swimming show was given at the Y.M.C.A. On basketball night Sue Fleming, this year's sports queen, was crowned by basketball captain Chubby Jeffrey and was awarded a silver medallion inscribed with Sports, Queen, 1954-1955? Programs such as these uphold the motto of the Girl's Athletic Program- There is something for everyone.
