Past reflects changing times Turn back the clock on the WATCH- TOWEB to the 192O's. Flappers were flapping, the youth were flaming. Wild fads and outlandish ballyhoo ran rampant during that decade known as the Roaring Twentiesf' This was the jazz age and prohibition was going strong. During this time, Beverly Hills was growing rapidly and as early as 1922 agitation for a local high school began. At a cost of SB703,000, Los Angeles City School District planned the high school for 7OO students. ln 1927, 380 students attended the high school's first session. The first outside speaker, a lVlr. Scott, came to speak on Reforestation. The first football game was played against Burbank High School, and even though we lost 47-O, it broke the tape for the athletic scene at Beverly. While the student body constitution was being adopted, so was Albion Street by Girls' League. was a Halloween Party and The Enchanted Christmas Tree was the first play performed by the drama class. At a yearbook assem- bly that year, it was suggested to the student body that they should buy a WATCHTOVVER to show their grandchildren in 1970. Reporting on the school scene were 29 jour- nalists dedicated to publishing a school weekly, which had the name High Lights. High was to repre- sent the hill upon which the school was situated and the high ideals which the students stood for. The Lights expressed the illuminat- ing influence of education. Spring 1928 introduced the school's first annual, The WATCHTOWER, a 144- page publication with a foreword by famed humorist Will Rogers. lt was dedicated to the students of Beverly Hills High School in honor of the two graduating seniors. Soon after breaking away from Los Angeles' jurisdiction in 1935, Beverly Hills High School was united with the elementary schools to form a unified school district.
