One of the main aims of the social studies department is helping to give students a broad understanding of the development of our institutions and social environment so that they may be better able to adjust to rapidly changing conditions. Great importance is placed upon becoming independent thinkers and useful citizens while developing critical thought and tolerance of opposing ideas. Department aims not only to improve skills and deepen interests which girls already have, but to create new interests and to safeguard health. It attempts to have every girl participate in planning her own program, setting her own goals and outlining the steps by which she can achieve these goals. Through daily experience it tries to enable every girl to grow in self-direction.
