One of the main aims of the social studies department is helping to give students a broad understanding of the development of our institutions and social environment so that they may be better able to adjust to rapidly changing conditions. Great importance is placed upon becoming independent thinkers and useful citizens while developing critical thought and tolerance of opposing ideas. These classes are particularly fine for the students preporing for careers in I aw, government service or foreign service, social work, teaching, journalism and any other field where one must be constantly aware of the problems in a changing society. 11 Poaer C ' ' on; 8 S .
