The recent success of Norman football must be contributed to Head Coach Dick Keelor and his fine staff who brought Beverly from a winless season to the ClF Ployoffs in just four short years. This year's offense which averaged over 25 points a game, was powered by nine All-leaguers. The defense also had nine All-leaguers and held their opponents to only about one touchdown a game while boasting four shutouts. This year's backfield v as piloted by Penrod Vladykci, the All-league quarterback who completed 12 touchdown passes in leading 8everly to its first league championship in over a decade. Running backs Lindsay Wellman and Dick Felton also earned All-league spots with 11 and 10 TD's respectively. Lindsay's efforts also won him Player-of-the-year honors in the Pioneer League. Beverly also had flashy Peter Bourne and Steve Wasserman as standout receivers and a line boasting such bulwarks as Geoff Schlaes, Mark Wiseman, Phil Savenick, Ed Fishbein and Harry Trotter. Defensively the Normans were unconquerable. With the exception of 40 seconds in the Culver game they were not behind to any team until the season finale. The line v as the story and Kevin Cahill, Jeff Steinberg, Mark Wiseman, Steve Wasserman, and Geoff Schlaes all earned All-league spots. Geoff was also voted to a pre-season All-California team and a national magazine's All-America team. The backfield was equally as good as the line with linebacker standouts Benet Rutenberg and Lindsay Wellman. The backfield gathered in 22 interceptions with Bill Weisberg and Rick Smith leading with 5 each. Kicker Mark Vladyko set a team record with his 27 extra points. Even though the final football polls ranked Beverly sixth, every Norman could still hear the chant of We re number one . 196 S’eve V oiinrron o'-noit block the pou V. FOOT8AU 1| (KM! The team responded with strong performances but could not break the win barrier more than once. The valuable skills and knowledge gained by Bee players under pressure will provide a strong basis for winning teams in the future. The Bees showing the greatest Varsity potential were offensive powerhouses Steve Kessler and Tom Troesch and defensive stalwarts Terry Mathers and Hal McAlister. C FOOTBALL Coach Flanagan's C ' Football team showed continual improvement throughout the season this year. Although the team had only one win against seven losses, the valuable experience gained was more important than the season's outcome. Freshman Charles Watt showed himself to be an outstanding prospect at quarterback, while Carlos Yeaggy proved himself a bruising ball carrier at fullback. Scott Hoag demonstrated extreme versatility on defense and was sided by linebacker Joey Sutton. 1 B . CW, C7 L ' S’ Sop '- ' k t Sv’loo. J.lf Web,,. M ) o,l Joy,, Cel I «. SO 7 n I Over the years Beverly Wafer Polo teams have maintained a high standard of excellence. This year was no exception. The Normans dominated the Sky League as few teams ever have. Led by the Sky League's Most Valuable Ployer ond AM CIF choice Dennis Needleman, the team notched six straight victories. In the process Needleman broke all school scoring records with 118 goals. A large part of the almost 16 goal a game overage the team carried can be attributed to the fine play of all-leaguers Dave Wallace, Stan Schwimer, and Doug Erenberg. Second team all-leaguers Ken Chernove and Albert Manopla also played key roles in Beverly's drive to the League Championship. Coach Richard Douglas directed the team to a number of big victories. The poloers took third place in the Buena tourney and for the first time defeated arch rival El Segundo. For the second time in as many years, Beverly poloers advanced into CIF playoff competition. Again the team readily won the first game but lost to powerful -w.--------------------- ' Bueno in the second. 203 The Bee Poloers splashed their way to a 7-7 record. Al Crandall and team M.V.P. Ed Schnitzcr provided the scoring punch while Bruce Goldsmith and Mike Hayutin paced the defense. The Bees were at their best in league where they finished second with four victories and but two defeats. 204 The Cec Team finished third place in league as the result of long hours of dedicated practice. The varsity harriers had an overall winning record, and even their disappointing 2-3 league record can be overlooked when viewed in respect to three previous winless seasons. Two of the league's finest runners were Bob Stein and Simon Longer. langer's superior running qualified him for C.I.F. competition. The Junior Varsity was the most successful Cross Country team in Norman history. Their 5-0 record led the league and only the league's inequitable scoring system enabled Aviation to push them into second place. It was the fine running of seniors Paul Diamond and Warren Skong that paced the Normans. The Frosh-Sophs showed great promise for future years. They displayed fine running style while compiling a 3-2 record. 7 1| left •© righv Top Bob S'e n. Srmon lo--get. V.ncent Hung. Ron Reotl. Jeremy Sbonick. Roget Osnieti. Raw) Tortow. Thousands of vociferous fans filled the arena as in olden days on the Ides of March to see if fourteen Norman players and a Coach called Reilly could conquer the strong men of the North, the Santa Maria Saints. Caesar and his fellow warriors proved too strong, too fast, too sure-handed, bnd too united for the Northerners. With a 74-62 victory the CIF crown was brought to 8everly for the first time in history. The road to the championship began early in the season when the Normans played in the finals of the Pacific Shores Tournament and the Beverly Hills Invitational. Outstanding performances by giant Rick Caesar and fierce Jason Newman earned all-tournament positions for both. In League there was no stopping the Norman powerhouse. Ed Carman's and Ed Burrus' inspired play against Aviotion on television brought victory to the team in a game that went into five overtimes. Ten straight victories gave the League Championship to Beverly. First team recognition was awarded to Jason Newman and Jim Tough, whose soft touch from outside also put him on the CIF all-tournament team. Ed Carman and Ed Burrus were second team choices. The League's unanimous pick for MVP was Rick Caesar. The greatest tributes to a fabulous season were the 26-5 record and an 88 point per game average compiled against intense competition. I) top Row.
