y li sccc c T lt has often been said that Bev- erly Hills Unified School District is a lighthouse district, one that lights the way through reasoned experimentation toward an unsur- passed educational program. It The elementary schools serve as the sturdy foundation, then certainly the high school is the beacon itself. The achievements ot our students and the success of our graduates sparkle brilliantly and beam lucid evidence of The soundness of our educational program. We have come a long way since that light was lighted 50 years ago, but we have not reached any zenith. As long as man seeks out the illumina- tion ot truth to banish The darkness ot ignorance, dedicated educators continually will seek new ways to strike The spark. As we stand at the outset ot another 50 years, we know that this exciting age ot un- fhe In believable technological progress will demand more and more trom the students it they are to be pre- pared tor their destiny beyond the horizon. Many years ago, a wise, old Japanese philosopher once said: Education is sometimes painful, But pain makes man think. Thought makes man wise, And wisdom makes lite endurablef' structional Center Mr. Kenneth L. Peters, Superintendent of Schools speaks of achievement

Principal, Dr. F. Willard Robinson, outlines our responsibilities. At the start of this school year a committee from the California State Legislature met in this district to ana- lyze our educational program. At the conclusion of this hearing one of their official spokesmen made an on the record statement. ln essence he said that Beverly was an example of a local school system that should stand as an educational goal, a light- house of public education. His use of the word lighthouse is significant. I see it not only as a compliment for all who share in the building of our school, but also as a responsibility and a challenge for the future. True to this responsibility we have marked new milestones again this year, New curriculum patterns, i so i the establishment of a program lead- ing to honors at graduation, extend- ing advance placement opportunities, and exciting plans for the expansion and improvement of the physical plant are all examples of our vital for- ward looking program, But the suc- cess of our school will ultimately be measured by the stature of the in- dividual human personality that emerges. Our goal is to send you forth as heroic men and women - to face life with courage and purpose and faith. This gives a head to human experience, a sense' for living. lf you leave with the qualities of which l speak, you go forth in the image of heroic man, and we will have done our job successfully. lg Believing his major function as Principal to be the gathering of a top staff which can operate in an ideal atmosphere, Dr. F. Willard Robinson has been able to admin- istrate a series of successful innova- tions in each of the five years since his arrival at Beverly Hills High School. Most recent of these is the experimental Independent Study Hall which will allow students the opportunity to obtain special aca- demic aid. Beverly's Honor Program, new this year, will allow all deserv- ing students to receive honors at graduation. Team Teaching is a sys- tem enabling the introduction of a wider range of ideas than is found in most high school classes. fp, K
