HTOWER ALUTE Honoring the man who for twenty years has guided the destinies of Beverly Hills High School, the Watchtower salutes Superintendent R. G. Mitchell. Principal of the high school from l94O to l947, the imprint of his educational leadership can be distinguished everywhere in our customs and traditions. During the difficult years of World Warll he served in the dual role of principal and superintendent. Then in l947 he went a step beyond the high school to serve the entire district as superintendent. lt was Superintendent Mitchell, as principal, who initiated Commencement exercises on the front terrace, Senior Holiday, the Adelphians, the Biblions. ln his first year here the Swim Gym was dedicated. Under his aegis the district has, among other developments ,enlarged its guidance services for students and parents, correlated the curricula of the elementary and high schools, begun the practice of mail- ing students their programs during the summer to insure the smooth opening of school, coordinated the school libraries under one supervisor, established a system of departmental examinations in the high school, provided special preparation for students taking the Subject A examination, and in- augurated the plan of interviewing alumni at their colleges to discover means of improving the educa- tion offered here. Firmly believing in the unity of the community and its schools, Superintendent Mitchell has taken an active part in the life of the city and has served on the board of directors of the YMCA, as a trustee of the Beverly Vista Community Church, and president of the Rotary Club. Highly regarded in his profession, he has received recognition from the California Association of School Administrators, the State Department of Education, and the State Board of Education. ln Superintendent Mitchell's two decades of leadership the Beverly Hills schools have attained a proud educational reputation throughout the nation. The University of California has three times awarded its Certificate of Honor to Beverly Hills High School for the scholastic supremacy of its graduates at the University. Colleges and universities across the country have given similar recognition to alumni whose attainments have proved their sound preparation. To you, Superintendent Mitchell, the Watchtower pays tribute at this twentieth milestone, voicing the sentiment of a student body grateful for your educational vision and for your deep interest in the young people of Beverly Hills. R. G. Mitchell, Superintendent of Schools ln the Watchtower for 1948 it was my privilege to write a message of congratula- tion to the members of the student body. One of the sentences in that article stated, Master yourself and you overcome your greatest obstacle to success. From the records made by the graduates of Beverly there is no question as to their ability and willingness to master themselves. During the past years the graduates have demonstrated their outstanding accomplishments in all fields of endeavor. The professions as well as the business life of our community have felt their influence. At the end of twenty years of professional association with outstanding teachers and student body, l wish to express my sincere appreciation for this experience and extend my best wishes for the continued growth and accomplishments ofthe Beverly Hills School System. The Board desires that the program of education be such that it will challenge the best of students as well as others to achieve the maxi- mum of their individual capacities. The Board of Education believes that superior achievement should be the rule rather than the exception in Beverly Hills Schools.
