We can easily adapt that statement to one we have emphasized frequently at the Beverly Hills High School-an informed youth guarantees an informed citizenry and thereby establishes the soundest safe- guard against encroachment by any of the insidious isms that are contrary to our democratic principles and ideals. lt is our hope that the graduating sen- iors have moved substantially forward in enlightenment, understanding, and edu- cational curiosity and are better able to meet their many responsibilities on the road ahead, whether it be to the colleges or universities, to the trade or technical schools, or to gainful employment. We are proud to have had some share in your growing-up process. We hope you are proud to look upon Beverly Hills High School as your Alma Mater. Good Luck - if you represent yourself well, you will represent Beverly well! Ld . ' ' si , gg Mr. Kenneth L. Peters, principal With enthusiasm for student activities, whether on the football field or in the classroom, Mr. Peters came to us four years ago after being principal at Monte- bello. l We have all come to know and love his warm, friendly personality, his cheer- ful smile and sly wink put everyone at ease. Our principal is someone to be proud of, and we are happy to have him with us. , ,R X , Mr, Harry M. Alter, vice-principal Discussing college entrance require- ments are Sophomore Counselor Miss Helen-Louise Aldrich, Freshman Counselor Mr. James Knauer, Senior Counselor Mr. Ed Elliott, and .lunior Counselor Miss Edith Knoles. A place to go with many of your problems is the Guidance Office. lts duties include sche- duling classes, programming students, inter- preting transcripts, and issuing work permits. One of the proiects of the Guidance Office this year was the filming of permanent rec- ords dating from l92l. This film was placed in a bomb-proof vault in downtown Los Angeles. Directing and supervising the activities of the Guidance Office is Vice Principal Harry M. Alter. As our direct contact with colleges and universities all over the country, he works with the counselors in recommending students for colleges and scholarships. Surveys are conducted among Beverly graduates to better prepare our students for college. Mr. Alter is also principal of Summer School and is our Bay League Athletic Representative. ,Z I Q -1. Whether the problem is small or large, the girls' and boys' advisers are always available to help us. Although they handle the difficult iob of upholding the standards that Beverly is noted for, they always display sympathy and under- standing. They are co-advisers to the Student Court and supervisors of all school social activities and games. Mrs. Pauley is adviser to the Club Relations Board. Their guidance has been an outstanding influence on the lives of many Beverly students. r-+4 HELEN-LOUISE ALDRICH Malhemalics, Counselor RALPH ARNOLD English, Speech NEWMAN BORDEN Mafhemalics CHARLES BROWN Boys' Physical Educalion GLEN CASE Vocal Music PHYLLIS CLEMENS Enqlish, Social Sluides ED ELLIOTT Mathematics, Counselor JUDY FALK Girls' Physical Education ELSIE FITCH Language, Social Sludies ' NORMAN FJELDSTED Science CHRIS FLANAGAN Boys' Physical Educalion PATRlCE FLOYD Head Librarian PAULINEI GARNELLA Commercial MAX GLASS Commercial RUTH GREENFIELD Language 'FRANCES GRIFFIN Language BRYANT HALE Stage Crew, Watchtower 'LOUIS HANCHETT Industrial Arts CHARLES HERBST Science MARY HERBST Mathematics MARY HURLBUT language RICHARD JACKSON Industrial Arts JAMES KNAUER Language, Counselor EDITH KNOLES Language, Counselor CHARLES LAUFER Journalism, Social Studies WARD LESTER Drama, English LOUISE LILLARD language 'JOHN MARROW Boys' Physical Education 'JANE McCLURE Home Economics STEVE MILETICH Boys' Physical Education L is 5 'Uv i 'Thu' ISI t E rg r Mw I, ,lfl 2' mm Q2 V T r If' I VE fi I, fl! h Eff-I , X , s as 551275 ANN MITCHELL Home Co-ovdinalor LEAH MOORE Music, English WILLIAM MORRISON Science SALVATORE OCCHIPINTI Social Sludies JOHN PADILLA Language ALIDA PARKER English JANET PATEY Girls' Physical Education 'DENNIE PETERSON Commercial CORINNE PYLE Home Economics 'WILLIAM QUANDT Social Studies 'LUCILLE ROBERT Ar! It requires a great deal of money to keep a group as large and active as the student body running smoothly, and it is the duty of the council to keep the, books balanced. The main sources of income are candy and student store sales, student body cards, and ice cream commissions. This fall Beverly was host to a meeting of the Bay League Forum, where the common problems of neighboring high schools were discussed. Noontime entertainment of stu! dents was the topic suggested by Torrance, and Santa Monica brought up the question of what to do in case of a tie in the Sports- manship Trophy Contest, it was decided that the trophy would be shared. Delegates repre- senting Inglewood, Leuzinger, and Redondo also attended. The council arranged for buses to trans- port students to the sports events which took place at other high schools. Many of these students would not otherwise have been able to attend the games because of the expense involved or lack of other means of transpor- tion. Under the direction of Student Body Presi- dent Alan Reed and the supervision of the sponsors, Mr. Peters and Dr. French, the Stu- dent Council executed many beneficial pro- iects wisely and efficiently. Members of this group include all the appointed as well as the elected stu- dent body officers, the representatives from both leagues and the four classes, and the editor ofthe Highlights. An activity ofthe Summer Student Council was the filming of a movie showing the pro- cedure of writing and printing the school paper. The purpose of this film is to help inspire an interest in iournalism in more lower grade students and to give the student body an idea of the work that goes into the publi- cation which they read each week. Because ofthe success of last year's spring play, the council voted to have another play instead of a carnival. The selected musical comedy, Good News, was presented in May. The council under President Johnnie Ander- son was responsible for the purchasing of a refrigerator for the boys' gym and also a new victory flag. The council provided a means whereby students could suggest programs for future assemblies and also re-established the Cafeteria Council. ln order to improve stu- dent-faculty relations to an even better de- gree the council planned a meeting and invited the faculty to participate. This meeting and other projects helped the students and the faculty to better understand each other's problems. Order in the court, says Chief Justice Steve Rykoff as Student Court begins another session. The purpose of the Court is to have students judged by their peers, rather than by faculty members. The associate iustices, who are appointed by the student body president, carefully consider each case that is brought before them. Cutting seventh period, going off-bounds, and conduct unbecom- ing a Norman are the most frequent violations. Offenders are sentenced to loss of Norman Points, detention, and suspension. Christmas and Hannukah were interpreted through modern dance, Narrating the program, in which there were over three hundred participants, were Johnnie Anderson, Barbara Fairchild, Nancy Rosenberg, and Alan Reed. The cast was headed by Stan Marx, Judy Speelman, and Mele Chuda- coff, and the choir and the orchestra provided the musical background. Miss Judy Falk and Miss Mary Ann Whitmore supervised all the chore- ography, while Mr. Fred Spellicy directed the entire production. A Early in May Beverly presented its spring musi- cal, Good News. The setting was Tait College, and the plot concerned the efforts of one Tom Mar- lowe, the school's football hero, to pass astronomy, play in the final big game, and marry Connie Lane. All this was complicated by the fact that he was engaged to another girl. Pete Meniou was Tom, Jeanne Pereira, Connie, Alan Reed, Bobby, Rita Seiler, Babe, and Linda Robinson, Pat. In addition to his role, Alan Reed handled the iob of student producer-director, assisted by Sue Simon. Mr. Fred Spellicy was in charge of the entire production, which featured outstanding sets, costumes, and music. The class council under the gavel of Mike Franks chose royal blue and white to be the permanent class colors, while the first talent show, Get Rolling Romeo, premiered outstanding talent to the student body. Lynn Bailey, as president during the second semes- ter, presented to Paul Zimmerman the Freshman Sports Tro- phy, which wqas initiated by the class to be presented an- nually to the outstanding freshman athlete. The delightful comedy, I Remember Mama, was Beverly's spring play, and the year was brought to a close with a successful carnival. Under the leadership of Captain Johnnie Anderson the Sophomore Showboat dropped its anchor long enough to present a talent-filled show to the student body. This was the year of the memorable faculty talent show, when Li'l Abner Glass, lem Scragg Spellicy, and City Slicker Peters left Dogpatch and invaded Beverly. Chef Mike Franks, second semester president, directed the sophomore hot dog booth at the carnival. The Student Council initiated the Club Relations Board, the car pool system, and a basket- ball rooting section and revived the Norman Newsreel. Deb- bie Reynolds, Eddie Bracken, and Liberace performed at an assembly opening of the March of Dimes Drive. Femme President Gail Karp called signals for the Pig- skin Prom, the Class of '54's first proiect as upperclass- men. Hostessing a get-together tea at her home, Gail welcomed iunior girls new to Beverly. later in the semester the iunior class assisted the Beverly Hills Junior Chamber of Commerce in its annual Mile of Dimes Drive for polio. They began their second semester by crowning King Bernie Liebowitz in the iunior talent show and later presented the Little Flower Orphanage with an Easter party complete with talent and refreshments. Many became experts on Tahitian dancing as Bryant M. Hale's Hollywood legend returned to Beverly's stage. Decked out in white sweaters with royal blue '54 emblems, the senior class took over the duties of the teachers and administrators on Senior Day. President Norm Garey in- troduced the senior actors in the hit Goodbye, My Fancy. With former Student Body President Alan Reed as producer- director, Good News, the spring musical, was introduced to Beverly by the second semester A. S. B. president, Johnnie Anderson. Stan Marx, Senior A president, gave the student body the unforgetable talent show, Senior Faces of '54. Climaxing its activities, the class said farewell to Beverly High as it was graduated in caps and gowns on the front lawn. Bernie Liebowitz and Don Long were credited with the two tallies. The Normans walloped El Segundo 26-7. Long's three touchdown passes and Jim Simp- son's circus catch highlighted the victory. Edg- ing past the home ll by a conversion, Mira Costa eked out a l4-l3 win. Dick Davis scored the first TD following Ron Siegel's recovery of a fumble. . . . A rough contest between Leuzinger and Beverly opened the last Bay League football season for the Normans. Facing a 7-7 tie at the half, the fighting Beverly team tallied two more times in order to down the Olympians 20-7. Ends Stu Hoyt and Larry Gilbert massa- cred Olympian halfback Tony Alteri, while Gil- bert recovered a fumble to score. Davis and Liebowitz made the remaining touchdowns. . . . Despite the hard driving of Gilbert and Co-Captain Liebowitz, the tribe from Inglewood 'rounced the Beverly ll. The Normans failed to stop the speedy running attack of the Sen- tinels as the latter racked up a 34-12 victory. Amazing pass-catching was demonstrated by Jerry Viner, a member of the Second String Bay League team, while Long completed l7 out of 23 passes. . . . The tired, but fighting band of Normans met the TorrancevTartars whose superior man power plus Beverly's lack of substitutes tells the story of the 33-6 final score. The Orange and Whiters tallied in the first quarter when Long completed a pass to Hoyt. The Normans were leading at the half, but the Tartars tied the score in the third quarter and completed four more TDs in the final period of play. . . . Smash Samo was a bit reversed-Samo smashed Beverly 40-7 as Jackie Douglas, blue and gold quarterback, ran one of Long's punts 92 yards to score. ln the third quarter the Long- Viner combination clicked on a i9 yard pass and tally. Mel Chudacoff completed the con- version. Samohi, C.l.F. champs, were sparked by the great play-calling of Douglas who be- sides the punt return, tossed two TD passes. . . . Friday the thirteenth proved to be unlucky for the Beverly football squad as the Normans wound up the i953 season with a 27-l9 loss to Redondo. On the short end of a 2l-O score the Marrowmen returned to the field after half- time and dominated the remainder of the game. Playing quarterback in a creditable fashion was Davis replacing Long, who due to an in- iury remained on the sidelines. Explaining a key play to Coach Chris Flanagan and Varsity Co- Coptains Bernie Liebowitz and Ben Strauss is head Varsity coach, John Marrow. Strauss, o tough tackle, received honorable men- tion in the Bay League standings, while both boys were Ace Club winners. Liebowitz starred in the halfback position. WL, H- ,-, .9 L W IH! The Norbabes ended the football season with a six win, one loss, one tie record to earn the Bay League Trophy with Samo. Doug Theis' passing highlighted almost every game, but the team owes most of its victories to their strong defensive playing. An average of only 2 and 3f5 points per game were scored against the Bees in league competition. Climaxing the Norbabes' season was the cru- cial 7-7 tie with the Vikings. In the last 48 seconds of play Co-Captain Ned Eckert ran the ball over for Beverly's only tally. During the Bee's unde- feated league play Eckert scored l3 touchdowns. The Norbabes had a team with fighting spirit. The line was the strongest in the league, and each team member had endurance and, more important yet, the desire to win. Halfback Eckert and End Gary Mordock made the first string All Bay League Bee Team. Dave Miller, the spark plug of the team, won second string honors. Dave, a three year Bee Letterman, dropped back from the Varsity to strengthen the Bee line. The best blocking back in the Bay League was said to be Sophomore Alex Irvine. Coach Hal Sieling illustrates a play to Bee Co-Captains Ned Eckert and Fred Gaylord.
