When Francis Bacon fwho did not write Shake' speare's playsl was Lord Chancellor of Enigland, he in- ducted into office Mr. justice Hutton. In speaking in his allocation of the judges future relationship to the juries, he advised them: '1 hat you be a light to open their eyes and not a guide to lead them by their noses. I think Bacon in this statement has struck the essence of what we would call in our day, democratic leadership. For there is such a thing as democratic leadership. It differs entirely from the leadership expressed in the idea of a DUCE, FUEHRER, or DICTATOR. That is control and domination by an individual. It is a return to the monarchical idea of governmental omnipotence and irresponsibilityfor the head of the state. It means that the will or fiat of the autocrat is the law. While it is customary, at the present time, to refer to this as leadership, it is not leadership at all. Democratic leadership, on the other hand, does not command by virtue of an omnipotent power, whether that power be given by a temporary majority or by a small group. It suggests, counselsjadvises, and, above all, in- spires. It appeals to rational beings whom it leads. There is great need for such leadership today. Great changes are taking place the world over. Some of the older generation are bewildered. You, the youth of today, will bear the fruits of the change. It is the problem of leadership that there be placed before the youth of today a true- picture of the changing scene. True leadership will do this. It will encourage intelligence. It will encourage the spirit of inquiry, which -is the true spirit of youth. It will at the same time show to the youth of today that the present is related to the past and that the future cannot be built upon a solid foundation if we destroy freedom and those values which centuries of civilization have brought us. Like the runners of old who carried torches before the litterfbearers, lighting their way, our leaders .must carry before the coming generation the torch of light, tolerance, and civilization. - L And so to my young friends of the Beverly Hills High School, I say: Seek true leadership. Follow it. And may this leadership realize its true responsibility to your generation. I am sure you will not fail us if they do not fail you. Remy if
