As a senior, I often witnessed this event while giggling and snickering at my unfortunate classmates. However, when it happened to me, I had a change of heart. Now I understand the animosity towards the librarians. The purpose of this letter is to enlighten them. When I was exiled for the remainder of the week, I felt this was unjust punishment. True, Iwas talking, but I was whisper- ing. When I was apprehended, I tried to explain myself feven criminals are read their rightsl, This only got me into deeper trouble. I was then informed that I lacked manners, and my attitude left something to be desired land I thought a person was innocent until proven guiltyl. As for my manners, Emily Post I am not, however, I am quite capable of sitting in a library. I find the librarians lusuallyl to be intimidating, patronizing, and annoying! Even when one is taking a break from studying, maybe just daydreaming, he or she is often commanded, Get back to work! Their yelling disturbs those students who do study - but no one tells them to get back to work! The following are some suggestions for the librarians: ll We all know the school is overcrowded, and we all feel the pressure. A little conversation andfor giggling is to be expected. Calm down before you give us all coronaries! 2l Think up a new system of punishment. To be kicked out of the library can be detrimental to grades and health fthe cafeteria is freezingll Maybe there should be a demerit system. After a certain number of demerits, students could Do time. This could consist of helping the librarians put books away, clean tables, or even yell at other students. 3I Behind every mild-mannered student does not lurk a little red guy with horns. But is you keep looking for him, you'll find him. My advice: if you want respect, you have to earn it. g Sincerely, Stephanie Duchin 78 Librarian strikes back To the Editor: An allegory: The young thing tripped lightly into the room, a smile on her face. The surroundings were pleasant subdued colors, drapes to filter the sunlight, carpeting to provide a sense of warmth, and quiet, friendly faces at surrounding tables. After a glance, she flitted to one of the tables and engaged in an animated if hushed conversation with her friends. The ex- change of news was something she felt just couldn't wait. Then, spying another friend half-way down the room, she moved eagerly in that direction. Social repartee was a very important part of her day. Didn't all the books on teenage psyche say as much? Suddenly, out of the blue, an authoritative figure swooped down. The young thing was asked to sit down and quiet down. Gadzooks! This wasn't a teenage gathering place after all. It was a high school library. And that mean old librarian was request- ing quiet - on the off chance that there just might be some students who were trying to study. What was the school coming to! Gur heroine stopped smiling. lndignation altered her usual pleasant expression. The indignity of it all! After all, she was a good kidg smart personable, would never rip off a book or vandalize a carrel. What was wrong with a period of library socializing anyway? A quiet place to study, was just a tacky old-fashioned concept. And worst of all, she was being asked to leave for the remain- der of the period. Not actually to be relegated to the frozen wastes of Antarctica for even to an evening with Lawrence Welkl, but to the school cafeteria, where she would be allowed to chit-chat to her heart's content, study with her friends and munch out on fat, scrumptious donuts and pastries. The terrible inequality of it all . . . Carol Dunn, Librarian Leduc. C Levasseur. R Levy. M. Lewis. D. Lewis. H. Lewis. K. Lewis. W. Libby. M. Libby. M. Libby. S. Lindsay. S. Little. C. Long. C. Video music is a kind of a visual listening concept that displays different filmed sequences while certain songs are put to them. Making the videos that are required for this concept has opened up a whole new industry. Film directors, conceptual artists, film crew, and many more people involved in this business have made it big, costing the rock bands a pretty penny. But as time goes on, these videos will become more and more important for promotional reasons. Most present-day videos feature only a concert set-up, where they just perform the song, but in the future the tide will be tumed and the rock bands will be acting in their own conceptual videos. After all this hard work is done by the rock band and its associates, it is sent off to the ever so popular MTV, where video jockies show them at their own discretion. There are four regular video jockies: Martha valley girl Quinn, J.J. Jackson, Nina Blackwood, and Alan Hunter. Not only does MTV provide constant music, but they have music news which includes various rock stars' birthdays, tells about new albums which going to be released, changes in the i.J , actual bands themselves, and much more. When a certain group decides to tour, dates which tell where and when they will be playing are provided. Interviews are often given with rock stars, such as Pete Town- send, Mick Jagger, Geddy Lee, Robert Plant. and many others. These interviews concern the band's situation, future plans. their videos, and their albums. Other specials on MTV include weekend concerts featuring many well-known bands, like Rush and Men at Work. These concerts usually last an hour, starting at 11:00 o'clock on Satur- day nights. Contests are held on MTV like The One Night Stand with The Who, which included actually seeing The Who's last concert and meeting the members back-stage. Another contest that was a large success was The M 'IVMedio Room, which included various electronic stereo equipment such as a stereo receiver, a vcr, a camera, and more, all of which were to be given away. Many groups, because of this new concept, have been put up to top ratings. Most new groups just starting out, not to mention the older ones, think this new system is awesome in the way the listener-watchers can now see their favorite groups as well as hear them. MTV is the entertainment of the future. It will soon surpass the old-fashioned radio, but will not leave it extinct. 83 J ff' MJ al I 'q V- Q ni' ,,,. .rw -4 ,f - , -nl' -A-4' ' 'dl ,nr . wwf' W, x J 45 4 I'- Q'Q uw!! :Of 4 'hu'--QW f-I 1 . 1 5 i'-I-' uzltlllvl-H - '- ' ' 111111:----........ .x'g1:uu111111?1 ISI!!-'Z iiliiii 33-1-111111 31111- 11333333 11111111 11111 3 '-----nw-'-11111: 1111111111111 19:--Q11 11 1 href 1 Y ' R7!Qlr FHIIA 11 I I 'il .. GIRLS' SOCCER The Girls Soccer team, coached by Mr. Maitland, put much effort into their season with an 8-5-1 record. The greatest victory for the girls was beating Swampscott with a 4-O score. Co- Captains Randy Shields and Billy Hamor were the teams strength and with the help of many seniors and underclassmen, the team tumed out to be a dominate force in the Northeastern Conference. Hopefully with the 1983 Tri-Captains Steve Pascuc- ci, Joe Miller, and John Putur, next years season will tum out to be as promising as this year. With an outstanding offensive line including Mike Fall. With only captain Peter Larcom not retuming next fall the golf team is looking for its continuation of the three year hex over the NEC. Every three years BHS has won the NEC title and 1983 marks another third year. This year's additions were very strong and showed that strength with impressive wins over Lynn English and Melrose. the undefeated state champ from last year. Beverly handed Melrose their only duel loss in three years. The team will be in the state and individual championships this June and will be led by Larcom. who was third in the NEC individual Tournament. and Scott White. who was unde- feated in duel play and chosen for the first team of NEC All-Stars and North Sore All-Stars. Scott Givens. who led the NEC to victory over the Cape Ann League All-Stars was equally as formidable as was Dave Miller, a medalist many times in his two years on the team. Unfortunately the team was hurt with the loss of Tom Gillis, a senior who was recovering from an operation. Allin all. the golf team was a major force this season in the NEC and is looking forward to an even better season in the fall, maybe its best ever. 111 3 15 1.7, A I .. , 1 - Q f Y-. -. 4' Q Iv 4, - F rl 9 r V ' 51 M' Q I M ' 1- V' 9 wufs' , QQf'wf 'f'1l'7f?fi' .1 lf -' f -Lf Q- 43 ' '.A3u'qV.i W, be , my Jiri ' Sf .-W' f .- H - I 1 i V . 5 4 ff' an 1 f I I 4 . . , . The girls started the season slowly, losing their first five matches. Then they quickly improved and shut out the next four teams in matches. All the losses were due to the absences of playersg yet, the team played well, and all losses were close. The Panthers then entered the State Tournament and beat Malden 5-1. That was as far as they went in tournament play after another disappointing loss to Saugus. Only during the season. Who? Twenty- year veteran Coach Fred Hammond. Words alone cannot describe the personality and general charisma of this figure. He is known by many as the US History teacher, who in many respects, is a part of history itself. ln and out of the classroom, Mr. Hammond is a professional, and as such, he stands out among his peers. Although many of his former students still remem- ber and speak well of the man, many more have known him as Coach. Mr. Hammond himself attended BHS in the early '50's and was the captain of the Cross Country Team in 1952. He has, unlike any other coach at BHS, compiled 20 years of consecutive winning seasons. That kind of achievement is one that is rivaled, not only on the high school level, but also on the college and profes- sional level, as well. Certainly Beverly has been en- dowed with good talent, but it was Mr. Hammond who sharpened and put it to work. During those 20 years, the Cross Country Team had many underdog crews, but as the record shows the team has won 707, or more of all meets every season. Behind each year and indeed each meet are weeks upon weeks of hard, grueling practice. Many a runner would comment that he would never give such a hard workout to any other track coach past or present as he would for Hammond. All too frequently it seemed, the team would be faced with a sneaker-shreading, blister busting dis- tance run. Mr. Hammond would announce these events, however, not with maliciousness or even concern. He would just announce them. Just as everyone was about to commit a mutiny of sorts. Mr. Hammond would rub his beard and say. Well boys, today we're going for some nice, easy distance - a good 8 or 10 miles. l want you to run to the Farms using Grapevine Road. He would quickly add, But make sure you take in the scenery . . . good scenery today boys. Somehow the team would do it, although no one would know exactly why. Coach Hammond's style was, and is unique. lt's hard to find a coach who could get away with leaving his team in Marblehead, or having it practice at Wing- aersheek Beach in hurricane conditions, but then again, Mr. Hammond is a unique man. lndeed, Mr. Hammond has proven to be an asset to B.H.S. as a teacher and as a Coach. Hopefully, he will be around for a long time to come doing just the same. 0,4 .6 Q.-.w 4 4- , -5.1 Bev Boy's Cross Country Opp 28 31 Lynn English 30 4-4 28 50 25 50 50 OPP 1 1 1 0 1 0 0 1 0 1 0 3 1 0 27 Gloucester 18 Winthrop 30 Swampscott 15 Danvers 32 Marblehead 15 Saugus 15 Salem Bev Girl's Soccer 3 Saugus 0 Danvers 0 Svvampscott 3 Lynn English 1 Salem 4 Winthrop 2 Danvers 0 Marblehead 4 Svvampscott 2 Lynn English 2 Saugus 2 Salem 0 Marblehead 3 Winthrop Q ,W Wt ix 4 Yr vw, Vu ' , Vi? It heralded in the new school year with the news of the new superinten- dent and an article relating the views of the students to the draft situation. It received local press coverage for its polling of US history classes and its naming Dr. Helen Caldicott as i'Woman of the Year. The staff at the Times looked more like an entourage of hand peddlers than a journalistic crew. While Editor Dan LaSo- ta discovered the influence of editorials, Rich Fecteau and Barry Dunphy enjoyed the safer entertainment and house call writing. Scott Dickenson and Risa Babroff, after swopping jobs, held down their re- spective stations with a certain noncha- lance. Kevin Wesley and his occasional sports writer, Marc White, covered the sports area while Peter Fecteau filled the letters column. Vinni Zizza, although not finding his Flies article in the paper, still contributed a great deal. New comers to the scene, such as Andre Teague, Laurie Field, and Ron Gainsboro, along with reg- ulars such as Tim Gannon, Pessimistic Pete, Lisa Norris, Danyele Desjardins, and Heidi Kempersal, were quick to supply fine article material. On the financial and photography side were Steve Giles and Becky Wuenschel. While they usually set their own deadlines, they always came through with the photos and the bucks. It was a transitional, yet very produc- tive, year. lt was also a milestone in Ledger history as the Ledger never did have quite the same viewpoint after the 1983 succes- sion. All in all, it was a fine year for junior journalists and would-be reporters. They covered the news and made the news. Thus another chapter in Ledger history was unfolded. ,ff l'lll ocfff' Back Rowz Risa Bodroff. Mr. Dan Murphy lTimes editorl. Rich Fecteau, Steve Giles. Front Row: Barry Dunphy. Danny l.aSota. The Aegis has been cited as one of the best written high school literary publications in the country recently, it won third place in a contest sponsored by Columbia University, and it has won other honors from the New Eng land Scholastic Press Association This year was a new beginning for the Aegis. With the departure of Miss Sandra Smeltzer Mrs. Suzanne Nicolo became the new advisor, and from last year's staff only three seniors retumed. Even though this year's staff, led bv editor Connie LeClerc, is made up only of seniors and freshmen, they all have the willingness and desire to get jobs done. Not only have they profitted greatly from adver tisements, but they also achieved finan cial success from a number of sales and sponsors. For a mere 52.50 you can see two old ladies with an unusual secret in Arsenic and Old L Ace. The curtain rises nf eight o'clock tonight and tomorrow night in the BHS Auditorium. The play is about two helpless old ladies, Abby and Martha Brew- ster, played by Chris McAdoo and Laurie Field respectively. Loved by all, these spin- sters have three neph- ews: Mike Chapman as the cynical drama critic Mortimer Brewster, Donald Knuuttila as Jonathan Brewster, the steroetyped evil neph- ew, and Andrea Teague as Teddy Brewster, who imagines he's Teddy Roosevelt and digs his way to Panama in the basement. Taking the part of Jonathan's sidekick, a plastered plastic sur- geon, is Dr. Einstein, played by Michelle Bobroff. Meg Furey is Elaine Harper, the persistent young woman after Mortimer's heart. Up and coming play- wright Officer O'Hara is Russell Ormiston. Bossy Lt. Rooney is por- trayed by Diana Ed- wards, and Ann Chisholm plays the part of the senile supervisor of Happy Dale ta nut housel. Other charac- ters are Spencer Bra- gart iplayed by Joe Occhipintil and Officers Klein and Brophy fplayed by Mary Melia and Rhonda Wilsonl. Elaine's over protec- tive father, Dr. Harper, is enacted by Paul Way- man. And finally, Kathy DeBoer is Mr. Gibbs, an old man. The director of this production is Mrs. Pa- tricia Flanagan, a teacher at Memorial Middle School. Assisting her in this job is Kathy DeBoer, the student director. A large amount of ef- fort has been put into making this production successful. The cast and crew are very positive about the final outcome. Anyone and everyone are welcome to come see Arsenic and Old Lace tonight and to- morrow night. Tickets can be pur- chased at the door on the night of the show. The D + D club at BHS is divided into two groups - beginners and advanced - which meet on alter- nating Wednesdays after school. Each player invents a character and gives it cer, tain powers and abilities. There are different classes of characters, fighters. which most players opt for. are warriors which fend off enemies. magic-users. thievesg clerics. and assassins When the players have their characters. the dungeon master fDlVll. a combination referee and narrator who has absolute power. starts the game The game itself involves adventures in which the players set out to fulfill a certain purpose ln the D + D club the advanced group is on a quest to bring vengeance upon the local Orc bands, The begin- ners, meanwhile, are in search of a certain group of bandits who put an end to the city ruler of their home town. Whether the adventures are in cities. under- ground labryniths. under water, or while exploring underground dungeons. There is a great deal of combat, swordfighting. and taking of treasures. All of the combat and magic can be confusing You can read all of the books lthere are five major volumes and many lesser onesl and still not really understand how the game works. The only way to really leam is to play. lt suffices to say that D + D is becoming in- creasingly popular at BHS and is now a steadfast organization here to stay. Unlike other organizations, membership is purely selective. Students qualify for membership in their junior year upon demonstration of four primary qual- ities: character, scholarship, leadership, and service, with a heavy emphasis placed on scholarship. In order to be eligible for membership, a student must attain a 3.6 grade point aver- age. Those who attain a 3.8 or higher re- ceive an Honors Blazer. This is the highest academic award available at Beverly High School and has been presented to twenty one graduating scholars from the Class of 1982. Although this year's officers worked to try to increase the involvement of the N.H.S. among the student body, it is a task which will involve many years of transition. Their goals for the future years are to see more emphasis placed on the four qualifying characteristics, increased civic and school activities, and more involvement of the general membership. The activities which the N.H.S. does sponsor include two blood drives, a Carna- tion Day, the Honors Banquet, and a col- legefcareer program. In addition, two mem- bers from the Beverly Gamma Chapter are chosen to compete in a nationwide scholar- ship program. This year's officers are Clay Burns, Pres- identg Andrew Karlyn, Vice-Presidentg Dee Hamor, Treasurer, and Karen Kromhout, Secretary. The advisors are Mr. John Mahoney and Ms. Joyce Poirier, the mem- bership consists of 36 eligible scholars. -mv. sf' fy' . , . Washington, DC., with an organization called Close-Up. The students will not be going just to take a week off from a school. If you like sixteen-hour days or walking all day. you would like this trip! Thirteen students went on this trip last year, and they all agreed that it was well worth the money. The schedule of activities include going to seminars to listen to one or two of President Reagans assistants, officials of the Organization of American States tWashington's wing of the United Nationsl. or some other experts on the economy, foreign affairs. or whatever else has something to do with the great world of politics. There will also be a day to speak with all your national representatives. Listening to people you have heard of or even know can make the week all the more pleasant, That special day includes listening to Congressmen Nicholas Mavroules and Barney Frank and Senators Edward Kennedy and Paul Tsongas. There will also be a day for the students to take in the city and go sightseeing. Most of the students went to Georgetown to shop or just walk around. while some went to such places as the Washington Monument. Lincoln Memorial. and Smithsonian Institute. During the bus rides to the places where the students were to have their seminars, the program instructors gave the students some information about where they were about to go or tell them some stories about places they passed during the ride. This proved to be informative as some students wished to visit those places. The total cost of the trip will be 5532, which includes transportation, the week's activities tduring the time the students will be under supervision by the Close Up staffl, meals, hotel. tips. and taxes. The students hope to fly but will probably be taking a bus. The cost will be slightly higher if they fly. A good testimonial of this trip is that there have been a couple of students who went twice. including myself. By SCOTT DICKINSON I First row: J. Tarr, S. Dickinson, J. Logan, S. Nelson, A. McPhers .
