One of the major projects of the Main Student Coun- cil this year was the annual Spirit Week. Do you re- member Carnation Day? What! You didn't get yours? Paul Ramsdell was victimized by pins and tags. but the seniors sus- tained their title on Tag Day. The whimsical Hat Day carried on longer than expected due to the usual screw-up of events and ob- livious students. The money-grabbing Slave day. full of banter and ridicule. ended that week, but where did all the profits go? Creg?! lndigestion! So much for the Pancake Breakfast where hungry football fans and passerbys enjoyed the Council's semi-edible food and Maxwell's instant cof- fee. This year's Powder Puff Team relieved the Council jocks of their organization and coaching duties and coached themselves to a loss under Salem. Of all the Student Council members. only Blair LaCorte added his athletic knowledge. Mr. Peroni and David Iutras applied their defensive and offensive tactics. The Council furnishes two thousand dollars for scholarships which will aid seven deserving students and contributed one hundred dollars to the char- ity Clobe Santa benefiting underprivileged children. I, X ,J THE MAI GFFICE The Main Office is the center of ac- tivities at Beverly High School. Lo- cated in this administrative center is the office of principal. Dr. Francis Fisher. Assisting Dr. Fisher with his busy schedule and activities are sec- retary, Mrs. Marie Ieffreyg principal's clerk, Mrs. Shirley Palmerg switch- board operator, Mrs. Eleanor Craig: and office aides Ms. Pamela Lovasco and Mr. Iohn Lessard. M 0 C ,G AI? Q ALT HGUSE Mr. Philip Kendrick, Mr. George Taylor, Mr. Thomas Tanous, Ms. Kathy Wells 1 'Q .L X The Alt House office crew seems to be cut from the same superior mold which makes up the other House of- fices. Mr. Taylor, House-master, may have the rough exterior necessary to hand out the penalties, but underneath he softens some when he states that the true purpose of his job is to make stu- dents responsible enough to strike out on their own. Assisting Mr. Taylor is secretary, Kathy Wells, a 1979 graduate ofBeverly High School. The two guidance offices are well serviced by counselors Thomas Tanous and Philip Kendrick. Both enjoy working with students and add that it is a fine feeling when a former student comes back to tell them they've made it. S 2 i g. at '15 ff 3.1 E flu. BRO HOUSE Mr. Robert Michel, Mrs. Dottie McAskell, Nlr. Richard Batcheler, Mrs. Patricia Danielson -A The new face in Brown House this year is Housemaster. Mr. Robert Michel. Mr. Michel joined the staff as a science teacher, and for the past several years has served as Science Department Coordinator. He finds his new adminsitrative position enjoy- able and most challenging. A very prominent figure in B-House office is Mrs. McAskill. As secretary, she has the pleasure of greeting absentees and tardy students with the ever popular question. Where is your note? The students in Brown House are well represented by guidance coun- selors, Mr. Richard Batchelder and Mrs. Patricia Danielson. Both are constantly challenged and delighted by the academic achievements and vocational choices of their coun- selors. ll BUCKLEY HUUSE Mrs. Ann Schack. Mrs. Rita Cashman. Mr. Demo Agganis. Mr. Stephen Sherriff Q. I9 xA ' X he -09, sz l . G-:sv I 54 J-l Z-A-.ni amz: Jw 4. x X0 Loyalty and dedication have helped Mrs. Ann Schack through another suc- cessful year as the first woman House- master at Beverly High School. Mrs. Schack commented that she enjoys her administrative position because of the spirited and cooperative attitude of most students. The Buckley House office is efficiently run by secretary Mrs. Rita Cashman. Her positive attitude toward students and their needs is warmly appreciated by the all. The guidance office in Buckley House is staffed by counselors, Mr. Demo Agganis and Mr. Stephen Sherriff, who are always willing to help students with academic problems, scheduling, and career planning. J' J 'i Y! .Hyun-. The staff at the Claude H. Pattern Vocational School seems at first sight to be the typical administrator and sec- retarial staff, but a closer look, one can see that there is much more. In addition to their regular office duties, Mrs. Wright and Mrs. Keech must also order supplies and tools needed in the various shops and bill for contracting work done by the faculty and stu- dents. Mr. Barry, Principal of the Voca- tional School, is a straightforward, honest person. He wishes to stress that the students who attend the Voca- tional School have a different frame of reference toward their school. They CHP should be respected for their courage and ability to go against the mode of the times and seek their personal goals in their own way. The Vocational School guidance counselor, Mr. Vernon Campbell, helps vocational students make wise and practical academic and career de- cisions. Mrs. Mary Wright, Mrs. Lilliane Keech. Iohn Geary has been elected Trade School President in his sophomore, junior and senior years. In this position, he has had to maintain good rapport with the many people he had come into contact with. Also, Iohn's presiding over the meetings have given him much experience with leadership which shall most likely help him in the future. He feels that the time he sacrificed was well worth it because of all that he has learned from the position. Iohn has also served on the Student Advisory Committee, where he attended School Commit- tee meetings. He has maintained his grades and participated in sports such as the football and golf teams. Iohn hopes that his dedication to his office of President may have inspired other Trade School members' interest in their class and school, as well as given others a better view of the Claude H. IU UUINGE r . 'Na Who were the most excited students at Beverly High during February vacation and the two following weeks? Quite possibly they were the students who belong to the G.A.P.P. club, the German American Partnership Pro- gram. For over a year, 32 students, aided by Mr. Kent and Miss Wagner, had prepared for their cultural trip abroad. The glorious departure was scheduled for Sunday, February 15. At 6:35 PM the group departed from Logan Airport on a Lufthansa airline and arrived in Frankfurt at 7:30 AM on Monday. After their arrival in Cologne, the students were greeted by their host families. The hosts were slightly younger than their American guests but often there were older members of the family. This year Miss Wagner and Mr. Burns accompanied the students as chaperones. Miss Wagner possessed tre- mendous knowledge ofthe German language and culture while Mr. Burns displayed the enthusiasm to keep spirits high. The excursion proved to be a thrilling and memor- able experience for the students. 8 wt,a'a it mi All -A r 2 x x Y. h It .1 - X . 1 Who is th' 7 the tutor asked. This year the students also served the mayor of Bev- erly, staff members of City Hall, the Beverly School Com- mittee, and various members of the National Guard. The meals are prepared all week in class. Everything from French Onion Soup to Hotdog Wraps have been served. The students achieved this by tak- ing the Waiterfwaitress Course, taught by Mrs. Ludwig. One of the largest of its kind in the country, the proposed project became a reality in 1981. The reason for the rash of publicity, ranging from articles in local news- papers to a segment on CBS News, is simple: through the undertaking of the project, Beverly High School will become the first high school in the country to have at least some of its electrical needs supplied by a Solar Photovoltaic system. The project will supply roughly eight percent of the school's electrical power. The Solar Photovoltaic system, which converts sunlight into direct current electricity was a joint effort of the Solar Power Corporation, Mas- sachusetts Electric Company, Stone and Webster Engineering Corpora- tion, and the Beverly Public School System. The projected cost was ap- proximately SS2.7 million, funded primarily by a grant from the United States Department of Energy. An in- verter building is also being erected near the site to convert the direct cur- rent electricity into alternating cur- rent. The most common question in re- gard to the project was the following: Why was Beverly chosen as the site? According to the Solar Energy Corpo- ration, Beverly High School satisfied a number of qualifications better than any other school in consideration. Among the school's positive assets are its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, its nearness to Logan Airport, its compatibility with existing elec- trical equipment, its commitment to solar energy, and its summer school session, which allows for load matching opportunities. Along with representatives of the participating companies, the local dignitaries who took part in the dedi- cation ceremonies included Mayor Peter Fortunato, Representative Nicholas Mavroules, Superintendent William Longridge, and Dr. john Cole- man ofthe Beverly School Commit- tee. For the most part, the project has met with a positive response from the school administrators and teachers. Mr. Zapantis, science co-ordinator, termed the project an excellent op- portunity for students to interact di- rectly with solar energy. . It works like this: Under the Veterans' Educational Assistance Program, you save up to S100 a month from your pay and this money is matched by Uncle Sam S2 for S1. After 24 months of saving the maximum, you would have 37,200 in your educational fund.
