L i V ' MW This year the community of Beverly is celebrating the three hundredth anniversary of its incorporation as a town. As we contemplate the overall growth and advancement of the community to a city of beauty and charm, we cannot but reflect on what has been a parallel growth in its educational department. But the schools have not merely paralleled the growth of the community and served as transmitters of the traditions of the past, they have also contributed to the training and accultura- tion of several generations of Americans who have in turn made their talents available to the community and school system. The present high school is an example of their enlighten- ment. Through the foresight and perseverance of a concerned citizenry, the present City of Beverly has been provided with a high school whose facilities have brought to it educational con- ventions, sport jamborees, and visiting educators. The school plant with its extensive possibilities for instruction and extracur- ricular use is making Beverly High School one of the leading educational centers in the Commonwealth. As the City continues to grow and need leadership, we are hopeful that the graduates of the Class of 1968 to whose fore- bears we are all presently beholden will demonstrate the loyalty and convictions which have brought the community to its flour- ishing present. RELEASE FRCM THE DAY'S STLIDIE R-.f 'f The Mixed Chorus sings carols at the Christmas Assembly. MIXED CHORUS Chorus classes were held twice a week under the direction of Mr. Lawrence Drouin. The students worked to make this year's mixed chorus a success. The chorus put on several assemblies during the year for the entire school and also staged public concerts. One of the most successful was the Christmas Concert with the Men's Singing Club of Beverly. They also traveled to Bos- ton Common for caroling. With the profit made at their various concerts, the chorus participated in an exchange concert. The Concert Choir was selected through audition from the entire chorus. This group was composed of those students with the most vocal talent. The choral programs put on by the Mixed Chorus have delighted the entire school. Much credit and thanks should be given to Mr. Lawrence Drouin and the chorus members. 22 Mr. Lawrence Drouin conducts the chorus REATI GA DAPPRECIATIN ,ar W' Q f cfgfm-ff- Q3 xlz' , - r X Joanne Hutchinson completes color sketch. The Office Aides organized business, while the newspaper staff informed the students of all house ac- tivities. The Fire Squad concerned itself with the safety of the faculty and students during bomb scares and firedrills. Through their efforts, the school was evacuated quickly each practice session. For the sports-minded, the Intramurals demanded their attention. Not only did Buckley House have good sportsmanship. but they captured the boys' touch football and hand- ball championships. This section ot' the school showed itself to be quite seIt'-sut't'1- cient. TRADE SCHOOL The aim of the Claude H. Patten Trade High School was to train young men for profitable employment and social and family responsibilities. Mr. Charles DiPie- tro, the Director-Principal, upheld his re- sponsibilities to the Vocational Bureau of the Department of Education of Massa- chusetts by supervising the high shop and curriculum standards. The applicants were screened for the school, and only a specified number were chosen. Many non-residents from neighboring towns also attended. These courses ranged from classroom work to arts, auto repair, printing, electronics, cabinetmaking, patternmaking, carpentry, and machinery. A special course was af- filiated with the United Shoe Machine Cor- poration. Mr. DiPietro supervised the students and their progress reports in order to help these young workers become pro- ductive and successful adults. PATTEN SECRETARIES Aside from their usual duties of answer- ing telephones, typing reports, and filing in- formation, the Claude H. Patten Trade High School secretaries had many other im- portant responsibilities. Although the school was connected by spirit and bricks with B.H.S., the Trade High School op- erated on its own budget. The school re- ceived federal and state funds through the City of Beverly and ordered and paid for its own materials out of this budget. Mrs. Jean- nette Corse, Miss Mary Benedetti, and Mrs. Elizabeth Lizio handled and processed these orders and kept the funds balanced. This can be seen in the now North Shore Community College. The building started as one of the first elemen- tary schools in the state. Later as the need arose, it became one of the first pub- lic high schools. When it could no longer accommodate the growing student body. it housed junior high students. Even this use changed as the years passed. and the building now serves as a college for stu- dents in this area. Through all these trans- formations the high ideals first upheld in the elementary school still reign in this community college. The Class's main goal was to raise enough money to finance the annual Senior Week, which involved a picnic at Crane's Beach and an informal dance. To do this, the Board sold tickets for an exchange concert with Middleton, Rhode Island. Aiding the officers were Mr. Michael Casale and Mrs. Jeanne Lombardi, the Sen- ior Class Advisors. Excelling in academic accomplish- ments were Kathy Wonson, Janet Machiewicz. and Walter Curran. Under the direction of Class President. Walter Curran, the Junior Executive Board helped to make the Class of '69 a success. The Juniors were fortunate to have as their Class Advisor Mr. George Accomando, who assisted Class Treasurer, Arthur Gran field. and the House Treasurers. The juniors gave Beverly High School some of its finest athletes, and school spirit was shown in both victory and defeat. Members of the Junior Class also per- formed in this year's Aegis assembly and the B.H.S. Talent Show. This year's Class has proved itself capable of accepting the Senior Tradition set before them. T I7O SOPHOMORE CLASS The Class of 1970 entered Beverly High School and immediately tried to make itself a vital part of the school environment. This class can be proud of itself, for it was the largest class ever to enter B.H.S. Under the leadership of Peter Boutcher, the Sophomore Class participated actively in all the school functions. Many sophomores became in- terested in the clubs, others in sports, and others in the publications, AEGIS and BEVERLEGA. With each day in school, every sophomore became more a part of the goings-on at B.H.S., com- pletely realizing that in 1970 they would be in a large way responsible for the up- keep of the prestige of B.H.S. academical- ly and athletically. .FO LE D TQMCRRQW -xf if 71,1 E - . This year we stunned all the upperclassmen with stars in track, hockey, and basketball. Along with athletes, we have our share of scholars participating in the Marine Biology Club headed by Mr. Michel. Their goal of the year was to make a collection of marine life found in the Beverly, Massachusetts area, the final display to be contributed to the school's science department. To organize the class payment of dues, House Treasur- ers were elected. The Sophomores' first year at Beverly High School was productive and enjoyable. y l72 EEILIMB UPWARD Frau Pmtprsuii tuiiglns .4 Guniiin ll gliiss 5 la Dianne Dimmick and Linda Kaplan eye hockey star James Deering, while examining the House of 1110 Seven Gablefpictures. ,fx Ch .hi Bi Sophomore Houm Trcnsurgrx.
