Students have excelled athletically and scholastically. A precedent for do- ing one's best has been established. The accomplishments of each student and the support each has received from fel- low students exemplify the pride and spirit of Beverly High School. The pres- ent student body has played its part in upholding this tradition. rx, J r , 9 I 'Y z 'iii 4. U V F , .iff . M - ' :IX Mr. Paul Crosby, head of the Guidance Department. I2 ,I ,, 'NJ p.- .:,, f YWO INQPIPJNG LEADERS The major responsibilities of the Princi- pal of Beverly High School were in the areas of organization, administration, and super- vision. As Beverly High School had been organized for many years, a new Principal needed to learn the established procedures of the school and the past policies of administra- tion. Of equal importance was for him to be- come familiar with the traditions of the school and the values of the community. Within the framework, he worked with the staff and students to keep everything going smoothly, to make whatever adjustments in the program were desirable, to co-ordinate the efforts of all personnel, and to super- vise the over-all educational enterprise. Help- ing Dr. Fisher, Mr. Paul Crosby, head of the Guidance Department, co-ordinated the guidance counselors, and handled vocational and educational matters. With these two in- spiring leaders, students and faculty were proud of B.H.S. SCHOOL QE EQ AND OFF-ICE AIDEQ Miss Susan Allison and Miss Suellen Na- son, with the help of the office aides, per- formed many duties this year. Their daily routine consisted of answering all calls and routing them to the proper recipient, greet- ing visitors, handling the PA system, sort- ing mail, keeping reports for Dr. Fisher, is- suing bus tickets, and publishing the menu. Some of their more exacting work was hand- ling the details of the graduation exercises and processing all transcripts leaving the school. SCIENCE The Beverly High School Science Depart- ment, headed by Mr. Richard Preston, im- proved its courses in biology, physics, and chemistry by more extensive and detailed use of the laboratories. An increase in the num- ber of materials improved the quality of these courses immensely. With the addition of two new teachers, Miss Carol Langley and Mr. james Banks, the Science Department proved to be a well-rounded division. SOCIAL STUDIES Our world became smaller as our knowl- edge about the countries surrounding us grew. The Social Studies Department, under the direction of Mr. John Page, strove for the students to become acquainted with oth- er lands, so that they could better under- stand the problems of these countries and their people. It was the job of the history teachers to acquaint the students with the countries, and the psychology teachers fol- lowed by helping the students understand the why of what they learned. Putting the knowledge to use. l LANGUAGES Uniting efforts with the Social Studies Department, the Language Department, too, helped our world grow smaller. By learn- ing a foreign language, the students better understood how a person in that country thinks. The knowledge of a foreign lan: guage encouraged students to travel to the country in which the language is spoken, Thus, the Language Department provided a stepping stone to seeing a country first hand. This year's President Nancy Carlin worked very diligently to offer all the members an active part in the c1ub's busy schedule. Under the direction of Mr. Wfhitney Patch and the able officers, the club presented the successful production of George Orwells 1984 for the annual Drama Night presentation at B.H.S. The members not only acted in the play, but also made the scenery, props and costumes. applied the make-up, and assisted in direction, produc- tion and all the other behind-the-scenes ac- tivity. Advertising, ticket sales, and prompt- ing were also part of the clubls responsibili- ties. Lockarcl leads the Beverly High Marching Band off the field during half-time. THE E. H. Q. BAND Mr. Lawrence Drouin, the musical direc- tor at Beverly High, planned a very busy year for the members of the band. Rigorous practicing to perfect difficult routines took place throughout the football season. The re- sult was a satisfying reward, as the numbers were presented successfully during the pre- game and half-time entertainment periods. jeff Lockard, the Band Major, was very helpful to Mr. Drouin by maintaining unity' and cooperation among the members. In- cluded in the busy schedule are frequent con- certs and various trips or exchanges. Thanks to the band, Beverly High School was able to offer one of the most well-rounded musi- cal calendars on the North Shore. Attractive members of the Baton Squad, Flag Squad and Cheerleaders provided dec- oration as well as enthusiasm at the football games. The Baton Squad was a part of the band, as was the Flag Squad and they added color and beauty to the band's numbers. The Cheer- leaders provided enthusiasm and vivacity with their varied and lively cheers. By maintain- ing a proud and spirited attitude, the Cheer- leaders stimulated the exciting atmosphere associated with football games. Y ON THE FIELD Mr. Lawrence Drouin, music director. J. With the help of Mrs. Jeffery, the office ran smoothly and efficiently, Mr. David Smith and Miss Rose Brancato did their utmost to see that every student under their care had the attention and guidance he needed. To assist in the office were the office and guid- ance aides. Although the duties were numer- ous, the jobs were completed and the spirit of Brown House remained. Mrs. Marie Jeffery, secretary. S.. Bl2aOWN HOUSE ACTIVITIES During the year the activities in Brown House were many. For the first time Brown House had its own newspaper which helped to bring the students up toydate on such ac- tivities as the intramural program, student council procedures and class election results. When a fire drill occurred, the agile boys of the fire squad helped to evacuate the building quickly, and to man the fire ex- tinguishers. Finally, Brown House intramurals had a successful year by providing such activities as soccer, tennis, volleyball, and badminton for girls as well as boys. F. Douglas concentrates during an intra- mural tennis match. I I 3 QENIOES 91 x-. N IQTPNF CDN Buckley House was under the leadership of Mr. Charles Pelonzi. Some of his duties included taking charge of discipline, the house council, and intramurals. Miss Frances Trowt and Mr. Demo Ag- ganis counseled all students regarding edu- cation beyond high school, and helped with other academic problems. They also wrote necessary recommendations for college ap- plications. Wfith the help of the guidance aides, the guidance room was kept in order. Office work including typing transcripts for college, answering the telephones, and checking attendance were done efficiently by Mrs. Ida Nicolo, The office aides helped to keep everything running smoothly. NEWSPAPEI-Z STAFF AND F-IRE SQUAD Things happened this year in Buckley House, and the newspaper staff reported them faithfully. Bi-monthly, the members of the staff worked diligently to gather the news, put it into newspaper form, and dis- tribute it to the classrooms. The Bzzgler in- cluded such events as newteachers enter- ing B.H.S., election results, and those vic- torious in the intramurals. With spirit high, Buckley House walked away with triumphs. The students welcomed fire drills, especial- ly during classes, but there was a more seri- ous aspect to them-evacuating the school as quickly as possible. The Fire Squad helped in the immediate exodus of students and faculty by holding doors, insuring free pas- sageways for all. In the event of a fire, the Fire Squad was equipped with enough knowl- edge to help the students to safety and to keep the fire at a minimum. FIRE SQUAD , METALS, TRADE I-HGH SCHOOL S Courses at the Trade High School were designed to equip boys to enter the indus- trial occupations in their respective trade or technology. In such courses, the students al- ternated between laboratory and classroom work. Upon graduation, it was the aim of the school to secure employment for each graduate in the vocation in which he had been trained. The studies available were basic electronics, auto repair, carpentry, pat- ternmaking, sheet metal, printing, machine drafting, cabinetmaking, and academic stud- ies. In all respects, Trade High School and Beverly High School were one, being bound- ed together by intramurals, class activities, and student council, which produced the most important factor of all-spirit.
