Miss Millicent Boswell, senior teacher of home economics. 26 Paula White and Susan Perkins prepare a meal in cooking class. HCME ECONOMICS Being able to cook without knowing how to plan a balanced meal cannot suffice for an efficient home- maker. Having the skills necessary to follow a dress pattern without the ability to choose a practical fabric is equally unsatisfactory. Every girl should know the fundamentals involved in selecting, making, and caring for clothes, as well as buying, preparing, and serving food. Miss Millicent Boswell, senior teacher of the home economics department, and Mrs. Ruth O'Carroll instructed girls daily in these arts. Vocational home economics could be studied as a major subject. lf the student preferred, she could enroll in courses in either foods and nutrition or clothing and design, both of which were electives. Miss Boswell and Mrs. O'Carroll attempted to prepare B.H.S. girls for successful futures with careers in home economics and for rewarding adult lives as wives and mothers. With the modern equipment which will be available at the new high school, girls will have even better opportunities for learning the household skills.

Apprecikzfivn and Discrimination MUSIC AND ART There is more to art than a few colors thrown together and more to music than rock 'n roll according to Miss Elsea Bridgess and Mr. Lawrence Drouin, the directors of Beverly High's art and music departments, respectively. Miss Bridgess' students had an oppor- tunity to acquire discrimination in taste and appreciation of beauty in our daily lives through the study of general crafts, general art, commercial art, applied art, and jewelry making. The pupils mas- tered skills which provided opportunities for profitable careers in the constantly expanding field of art. Mr. Drouin encouraged stu- dents to improve their musical abilities, as well as to appreciate and understand both classical and popular music. The chorus, band, and orchestra, which accepted all interested students willing to devote the required time and effort, were directed by Mr. Drouin. Mem- bers of the three groups participated in various school functions: the band entertained at football games, the orchestra played at several assemblies and also at graduation, chorus members sang at concerts and assemblies. The instrumental and choral students were eligible to compete for membership in the Massachusetts Dis- trict and All State Music Program. With the additional space and equipment in the new high school, both the music and art depart- ments will be able to serve an increased number of students. Well-Kouudad Jndzvzdualv PHYSICAL EDucATloN Mr. Leo Smith and Miss Ann Farley headed the physical education department this past year. They attempted to develop a well-rounded individual, both physically and mentally through controlled activity. ln this way, they hoped to raise the fitness standard of B.H.S. to the national level and develop an interest in carry-over sports after high school. This past year, the boys received instruction from Mr. Smith in touch football, soccer, basketball, softball, and advanced stunts and tumbling. They also took part in the national fitness test which consisted of the fifty-yard dash, softball throw, potato race, situps, pull-ups, standing broad lump, and the most popular event of all, the six-hundred yard run. Intramural basketball was the only extra-curricular ac- tivity connected directly with the boys' physical education department. However, Mr. Smith feels that there will be a complete intramural program in the new high school with basketball, softball, and touch football among the sports offered. Miss Farley instructed the girls in basketball, badmin- ton, folk-dancing, field hockey, soccer, softball, and track. Cheerleading, girls' basketball, and G.I.C. were also under the direction of the girls' physical education department. .4111-.A Mr. Leo Smith, boys' physical education instructor.
