Foley headed the administra- tion department of Beverly High School, As principal of a high school with over fifteen hun- dred students, Mr. Foley was burdened with an unlimited amount of work. Therefore, this past year, the Beverly School Committee ap- pointed three men, Nlr. Harland Carter, Mr. George Taylor, and Mr. Thomas Donahue to assist him as housemasters. Mr. Donahue directed the first floor and cafe- teria supervision, iunior discipline, and the checking of iunior attendance. Mr. Carter super- vised the second floor, senior discipline, and the checking of senior attendance, while Mr. Taylor directed the third floor and supervised sophomore discipline and the checking of soph- omore attendance. Each housemaster was also guidance coun- selor for one-third of the sophomores, and his work was basically the same as that of principal of a small school with the exception that the ultimate responsibility was in the hands of Mr. Foley. The duties were delegated by Mr. Foley in specific areas chosen by him. ln the new high school, the housemasters will be responsible in their respective houses for scheduling, supervising in all phases, ob- serving teachers, and generally supervising guidance. As the plan develops, each house will consist of sophomores, iuniors, and seniors and will be almost a separate school within a school. OFFICE STAFF AND OFFICE AIDES With over T500 pupils and. approximately seventy faculty members at Beverly High during the i964- 65 school year, the office staff and our principal, Mr. William Foley, had many busy days! Unexpected problems such as conducting fire drills and dismissing ill pupils arose daily. Mrs. Louise Dube controlled the attendance and the registers. Miss Nancy Cyr and Miss Susan Allison not only checked the programs and records of students, but also sold bus tickets, wrote letters, filed information, read mail, and took telephone calls. The yearbook staff and the members of the guidance department depended on the office workers for references. At graduation time the staff aided the senior class advisor, collected the final class dues, prepared the diploma list, organized the exercises for the services, and arranged service en- listment. The office aides, who volunteered their time during study periods, included seniors and iuniors with good academic standing. Besides run- ning errands, the students collected attendance, did routine filing, and took telephone messages. Plans for the new high school consisted of a divi- sion of the students into three houses each with a headmaster's and a secretary's office. Mr. Foley and his secretary made plans for the main office from which they would govern the entire school. The administration also anticipated the valuable assistance of the office aides in the new school. I2 1 . iv' ED f N 'VJ C? QS? Among the courses offered were Those for general, business, and college preparatory students. The Oral Communications course was expanded to meet a growing demand. New reference books and text bboks, such as unabridged dictionaries and self-teaching books were purchased. With all the changes, however, our three traditional school publications continued to meet their deadlines. The B.H.S. NEWS published by The English 4 Journalism class under the direction of Mr. Emery Hollerer, kept us informed of the latest school events. The AEGIS, supervised by Miss Frances Trowt, provided us with a chance to enioy the literary Talents of our fellow students. Beverly High's yearbook, the BEVERLEGA, headed by Miss Isabel Harriman, furnished us with a memento of the past year's activities. The Dramatic Club, under the direction of Mrs. Marta Dennis, offered an outlet for those with theatrical ability. Unquestionably, the English Department provided opportunities for every student, no matter what his interests. and ,7rfurmzHsm Mr. John Sanborn, Mr. George Kinnaly, Miss Sandra Johnson. During the high school years nearly all the students included a science course in their curriculum. The sciences at Beverly High consisted ot biology, phys- iology, chemistry, physics, and senior science with supplementary laboratory work in chemistry and physics. Mr. Richard Preston headed the department. The obiect of the science division was the teaching and the studying of the physical world and the under- standing and application ot the scientific principles. ' Emphasis was centered on the students' enthusiasm the laboratory, More and better facilities were outlined for the new high school. These included three lecture rooms tor chemistry and one each tor physics, senior science, and physiology. The department also planned a lab- oratory and a project workroom tor chemistry and physics classes and a dark room. Mr. Preston and his teachers anticipated tour combination class and lab- oratory rooms in addition to an animal and plant room for biology. SOCIAL STUDIES Problems of Democracy and the history and psy- chology classes come under the direction of Mr. John Page. In the psychology classes students were given a chance to better understand themselves, while in the history classes, which included American History, World History, and Modern History, they studied the problems which face nations. The course in Problems of Democracy provided the students with an oppor- tunity to learn more about the workings of government and keep them up to date an current events. Supple- mentary history reading material, provided mainly for non-college preparatory students, was one ot the most significant improvements made in this department. A record number of students were enrolled in these courses this year, and they received the benefits of new text books, maps, and films. The Senior history research papers were the major proiects, and the Problems of Democracy class corresponded with Con- gressman William Bates to learn about his views on maior issues. Students who participated in these classes sought and received an increased understanding ot hu- man relations. Mr. Michael Casale shows Paulette Mach- eterre the Louisiana Purchase Region. As the school nurses they kept the health records of the sophomores, and the new students up to date. Early in the year Mrs. Carr and Mrs. Townsend assist- ed Dr. Samuel Albert in the sophomore check-ups at the school. They also con- ducted eye and ear tests for the seniors, juniors, and sophomores. Mr. Joseph Brucchi was director-prin- cipal of the new school until his resignation, when Mr. Robert Watson acted as interim director-principal. The new facilities will allow for expansion of the program to in- clude an expected top enrollment of about three hundred students within two years, the present enrollment is one hundred ninety. Two new departments were added, and furnished with modern equipment. The other departments-Auto Repair, Car- pentry, Pattern Making, Machine Shop, Printing, Sheet Metal, and Cabinet Mak- ing made use of equipment from the former trade school with some replace- ments and additions. The traditional house building project was carried on at Santama- ria Avenue with three departments con- tributing their skills: the carpentry stu- dents built the house, the sheet metal di- vision installed the heating system, and the cabinet making classes built and in- stalled the kitchen cabinets. Last year's placement program, was one hundred per cent successful. Stu- dents were provided with sound vocational training which would enable them to find and hold a position after graduation and help them to become good citi- zens and consumers. A wide variety of courses was offered to students in the business department. They received instruction in business mathematics and bookkeeping, shorthand and typing, office and secretarial practice, economics and law, salesmanship, advertising, and distributive education, and consumer education. There were a few extra-curricular activities offered to students by the Business Department. Business man- agement of the Aegis and Beverlega, which consisted of advertising, subscriptions, and typingj were all handled by business students. Miss Rose Brancato headed the Aegis business department, while Miss Margaret Miner directed the Beverlega advertising committee. Mrs. Evelyn Ricciardi advised the Beverlega subscriptions committee, and Mrs. Constance Golds- worthy headed the'Beverlega typing committee. Also, Mr. Edward Deep advised. the Retail Merchandizing Club, a club associated with his distributive educa- tion class. 23 Hvmmunicatian With Other lands TH E LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Pupils who took advantage of the language pro- gram offered at Beverly High and acquired only the knowledge of grammar rules did not success- wing Miss Watters explains a gram- mar rule to Judy Maxner. 24 fully complete the course. The student missed a large part of the education available to him if he was not able to communicate and appreciate the culture of the people whose language he studied. The teachers in our language department attempt- ed to give pupils practical training which they would find interesting and useful as they meet people with different backgrounds in a modern world. Miss Elsie Watters directed the language depart- ment this year. The teachers in this department of- fered classes in French, Spanish, German, and Latin. For several years, Mrs. Lila Hennessey has served as faculty advisor for the German Club. Most college preparatory students were required to study a language for at least two years. Usually, these pupils found that the preparation they re- ceived at Beverly High was completely sufficient, they could compete for entrance to institutions of higher learning with students from the entire country. Those students who took the oral com- prehension tests this year used the language lab during free periods for more extensive listening practice. This work was voluntary, and pupils who used the program to its full advantage found it most beneficial in the tests. Miss Watters hopes that next year the facilities at the new high school will allow for more extra-curricular activities by the language department. Apprecikzfivn and Discrimination MUSIC AND ART There is more to art than a few colors thrown together and more to music than rock 'n roll according to Miss Elsea Bridgess and Mr. Lawrence Drouin, the directors of Beverly High's art and music departments, respectively. Miss Bridgess' students had an oppor- tunity to acquire discrimination in taste and appreciation of beauty in our daily lives through the study of general crafts, general art, commercial art, applied art, and jewelry making. The pupils mas- tered skills which provided opportunities for profitable careers in the constantly expanding field of art. Mr. Drouin encouraged stu- dents to improve their musical abilities, as well as to appreciate and understand both classical and popular music. The chorus, band, and orchestra, which accepted all interested students willing to devote the required time and effort, were directed by Mr. Drouin. Mem- bers of the three groups participated in various school functions: the band entertained at football games, the orchestra played at several assemblies and also at graduation, chorus members sang at concerts and assemblies. The instrumental and choral students were eligible to compete for membership in the Massachusetts Dis- trict and All State Music Program. With the additional space and equipment in the new high school, both the music and art depart- ments will be able to serve an increased number of students. HCME ECONOMICS Being able to cook without knowing how to plan a balanced meal cannot suffice for an efficient home- maker. Having the skills necessary to follow a dress pattern without the ability to choose a practical fabric is equally unsatisfactory. Every girl should know the fundamentals involved in selecting, making, and caring for clothes, as well as buying, preparing, and serving food. Miss Millicent Boswell, senior teacher of the home economics department, and Mrs. Ruth O'Carroll instructed girls daily in these arts. Vocational home economics could be studied as a major subject. lf the student preferred, she could enroll in courses in either foods and nutrition or clothing and design, both of which were electives. Miss Boswell and Mrs. O'Carroll attempted to prepare B.H.S. girls for successful futures with careers in home economics and for rewarding adult lives as wives and mothers. With the modern equipment which will be available at the new high school, girls will have even better opportunities for learning the household skills. Well-Kouudad Jndzvzdualv PHYSICAL EDucATloN Mr. Leo Smith and Miss Ann Farley headed the physical education department this past year. They attempted to develop a well-rounded individual, both physically and mentally through controlled activity. ln this way, they hoped to raise the fitness standard of B.H.S. to the national level and develop an interest in carry-over sports after high school. This past year, the boys received instruction from Mr. Smith in touch football, soccer, basketball, softball, and advanced stunts and tumbling. They also took part in the national fitness test which consisted of the fifty-yard dash, softball throw, potato race, situps, pull-ups, standing broad lump, and the most popular event of all, the six-hundred yard run. Intramural basketball was the only extra-curricular ac- tivity connected directly with the boys' physical education department. However, Mr. Smith feels that there will be a complete intramural program in the new high school with basketball, softball, and touch football among the sports offered. Miss Farley instructed the girls in basketball, badmin- ton, folk-dancing, field hockey, soccer, softball, and track. Cheerleading, girls' basketball, and G.I.C. were also under the direction of the girls' physical education department. .4111-.A Mr. Leo Smith, boys' physical education instructor. Under the direction of Mr. Daniel Shea and Mr. Otto Winquist, the boys received proper instruction in the use of hand tools and power machinery. ln this man- ner, they learned to develop skills that will be useful in the future for basic home repairs. This also gave them an opportunity to decide if they wanted to choose mechanical work for their careers or enter into appren- ticeship in areas other than those taught in the Trade High School. The boys made many projects of their own choice during the year. Some of these projects in- cluded bookshelves, coffee tables, and end tables. The boys paid only for the materials they used. BEVERLEGA The thrill of the football games, the hilarity of the Aegis Assembly, and the excitement of the Senior Class Play were only some of the memories the staff of the Beverlega tried to capture for the students of Beverly High School. Working under the direction of Miss Isabel Harriman, editor-in-chief Catherine Watts, with the help of the assistant editors, guided the activities of the committees. Editor Robert Ossoff and Paul Pro- kop and the lay-out committee were responsible for the make-up and design of the book, and they spent much of their time working out the best arrangement for each page. Supervised by Miss Judith Corson, edi- tor Gloria Barry and the copy committee interviewed members of the faculty, the administration, and the student body in order to present interesting facts, then they composed the writeups. The photography com- mittee and editor Paul Hitchings assisted the photog- rapher by scheduling the pictures and planning the background. Under their guidance the council officers led the group in a very pro- ductive term. In order to prepare Beverly High for the transition into the new school, a new con- stitution was written by a special committee and ratified by the student body. Another commit- tee presented a set of dress rules to the council. A new, more democratic method of conducting class elections was instituted this year. The mem- bers were also required to fulfill the normal du- ties inherent in student council membership, such as running dances and acting upon the griev- ances of the student body. After elect- ing their officers, the members met daily with Mr. Edward Deep, their club advisor, to discuss business theory. During the year they received an opportunity to use their classroom knowledge while earning money on part-time jobs secured for them through the school. The club program stressed the need for practical saving. A portion of each student's earnings was put into a savings account. During the year they used the money to finance field trips to various business concerns, to pay graduation expenses, and to finance a dinner which was held for the students' enioyment at the end of the year. DRAMA NIGHT As a change from the light plays usually presented by students at Beverly High, this year Mrs. Marta Dennis directed The Diary of Anne Frank for Drama Night. Be- cause of the enthusiastic re- sponse with which the play was received, it was pre- sented twice instead of once as is traditional. Both cast and audiences will long re- member the moving story of Anne Frank. Susan Schwartz, Jeanette Strahl, Martha Mercaldi, and Scott Campbell listen with anxiety as Richard Miller describes the suffering of the people of Holland. David Sitek, Susan Schwartz, Martha Mercaldi, and Scott Campbell fear that Martha Mercaldi's screams from a nightmare may alert the police of their presence. Magid TALENT SHOW This year's talent show, under the di- rection of Mr. Drouin, was a great success. David Sitek was the master of ceremonies. The talent consisted of Johnny and the Milers playing an instrumental, comedian Richard Conrad, a humorous singing skit by Karen Doane and Barbara Dove, and folk-singing by Kathy Goodrow and Nancy Quinlan. Susan Perkins did a pantomine, Danny Troubetaris played the accordian, Judy Anderson sang, Sherman Smart showed the audience his magic, and Kathy Goodrow did an authentic Hawaiian hula. The program was concluded with an instrumental by the Steve Tanzer trio. GERMAN CLUB Second, third, and fourth year students were eligible to ioin the German Club this year under the supervision of Mrs. Lila Hennessey. The forty- five club members elected the following officers: William Yarrison, president, Thomas Crowell, vice- president, Susan Doherty, secretary, Donna Tawse, treasurer. The dues, which would pay for bus fares and tickets to the annual Tivoli Festival at Boston University in the spring, were set at twenty- five cents a month. This year B.H.S. was repre- sented by Sandra Pierce at the German speech contest held at the festival. The entertainment pro- grams for the bimonthly meetings were planned by the club members. It was considered a successful year for the German Club, and with the growing interest in the German Language, the club should continue to prosper. 54 ' I Hulfurc SPANISH cLuB The Spanish Club, under the di- rection of Mrs. Donavan, was or- ganized for the first time this year. The club was opened to students who had two or more years of Spanish. Committees were set up to plan future meetings. At the meetings the members played games in Spanish, discussed the culture of Spain and Mexico, and talked about their Spanish pen- pals. The club members also raised money by collecting dues to go to a Spanish restaurant and to buy Spanish books for the library. The club officers were Pat Furey, Presi- dentg Alice Haddrell, Vice-Presi- dent, Linda Guerrette, Secretaryp and Marion Gordon, Treasurer. BOTTOM ROW: F. Bolla, L. Ward, S. How- ever, they did perform at Memorial Jun- ior High School, and, as usual, at the graduation exercises in June. Several of the members played in the District Or- chestra and participated in the All-State Orchestra auditions. The music played by the group was both modern and traditional. Wclories, Urs, and Defeats HOCKEY Led by Co-Captains Jim Gilligan and Alan Johnson, the B.H.S. pucksters experienced a 4-7-3 record this past season. It was a rather peculiar season for coach George Kinnaly's crew as they played their best games in losing causes against the powerhouses of the league and then turned in some backbuster performances against weaker teams which resulted in disappointing l-l ties with Peabody'and Salem. Beverly lost the opener and then tied their next two. They then played two excellent games against Northeastern champ Marblehead and Es- sex County champ Saugus, but all they had to show were two one-goal losses. The team then ielled as they won four of their next six games as goalie Paul Carroll came up with three shutouts including a 2-O victory over Swampscott that eliminated them from the state tournament. With an outside chance for a play-off spot, Beverly then lost to Danvers and Lynn English by 4-l scores and then were held to a l-l tie by winless Salem in the finale. However, hopes are high for next season as goalie Carroll and Mike Gilligan will lead a group of five returning lettermen that will form a strong nucleus for the team. KH .Si Varsity and junior BGYS' BASKETBALL This year was a rebuilding year for Beverly under a new coach, Richard Batchelder. With only two lettermen, captain Steve Davidson and George Copelas, returning from last year, coach Batchel- der had to start from scratch to form a squad that turned in a very respectable 9-9 record. Beverly experienced rough going at the outset of the season, and after eleven games they owned a 4-7 record. However, the team balanced out this record as they won tive of their last seven games, including a 70-68 upset victory over Tech Tourney qualifier Lawrence. Since Captain Davidson was the only senior on the squad, coach Batchelder has high hopes for next year as he will welcome back seven return- ing lettermen. Added to these returnees will be members from the Junior Varsity team that had an excellent season as they won twelve of their eighteen games under new coach John Perroni. F7 GIRLS' BASKETBALL Under the direction of Miss Farley, cap- tain Janet Ahman led the girls' basketball team to an excellent 8-3 record. Approxi- mately twenty-tive girls Played basketball this year, nine of them were varsity. Be- cause fewer students tried out for the team than in past years, any girl who wished to play was accepted, providing she met the basic requirements. No player could be over nineteen, nor could she have a U in self-discipline. Each girl must be passing fifteen credits of work. For an hour after school every day the girls practiced, with games on Tuesdays and Fridays. The scoreboard was evidence of the fact that their work was rewarded. Sfraiuirzg BOTTOM ROW: J. Cassell, M. We as members of the Junior Class, now seasoned in the ways of the school, con- tributed in many ways to B.H.S. Members of our class have excelled scholastically, distinguishing themselves in mathematics and science. We participated in athletics, cheerleading, band and chorus, baton twirl- ing, and dramatics. In helping to make the transition to the new school,' we, the members of the Class of 1966, contributed much of our time and many of our talents. Our representatives played an important role in the drafting of the constitution for the new school. In looking forward to our senior year in the new high school, we will continue to maintain the high standards that have been established in previous years. fa Heverly High JUNIOR BEVERLEGA STAFF BOTTOM ROW: J.
