For the girls who wished to study this art, the school offered a variety of practical courses. Under the direction of Miss Ruth Clutf and Miss Millicent Boswell, these courses offered instruction in cooking, sewing, and home and family living. The subiects may have been taken as a complete home economics course or indi- vidually as electives. Students whip up a storm while preparing a cake in cooking class. ..1 1- ff X ,

WE LEAR THRQLIGH EXPERIENC HISTORY The rich history of the United States and the heritage of the world were brought to B.H.S. students during the past year by the history de- partment, headed by Mr. John Page. Courses in modern history, problems of democracy and American history were offered to all with the hope of increasing student comprehension of the com- plex, surrounding world. With the aid of new books and an increased usage of films, especially in the study of modern history, the dual goals of student understanding and appreciation wefe achieved. .Qx-Qi. COMPETITION CLILTI ATES CO-ORDI ATIO Windmills test the extent of a young man's physical endurance and ability. PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Under the supervision of Miss Anne Farley and Mr. George Taylor, the Physical Education Depart- ment at Beverly High School emphasized physical fitness. National physical fitness tests, given in coniunction with the President's Physical Fitness Program, showed certain phases in which Beverly area students needed exercise. The department then concentrated on these phases to completely fulfill the requirements of the tests. Class activities such as sports, gymnastics, and dancing for the girls were supplemented by the Girls' Intramural Club, and interscholastic sports such as boys' and girls' basketball, football, hockey, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track. 4.1 Boys increase their physical stamina by practic ing various exercises, including situps. ti!
