Life at B.H.S. is not merely a day-in-day-out routine, instead, the beginning of each day brings varied experiences. Each morning, the office accommodates students requesting absence passes, while on the second floor, a flux of seniors converges on the library for thesis material. Also familiar in student life are assemblies, ranging from pep rallies to the Aegis assembly. Students in classrooms are intent on a teacher's words, or industriously studying. Student life, however, is not abrupt- ly halted with the close of day, there is home- work to do and sports events to attend. Friendship, sportsmanship, learning-each is an integral component of the rich student life at Beverly High School. 1' 3? , 51 vu.. sq? E 4 . ,Yi NSE? ,- -A fi 1 EWAMTQ ,' 1 .. The pencils, text- books, and report cards represent the most im- portant phase of our three years, our academic strivings. As underclassmen and seniors we have been challenged by serious study. Basketballs, footballs, and track shoes symbolize the competi- tive spirit at B.H.S. The Student Council gavel, the yearbook, the dramatic club make-up-these, a part of the many activities, remind us of our extracurricular work. How many of the products of these symbols will remain with us? Pencils, textbooks, and report cards may change form, but life will always placeatools in our hands and iudgments on our effort. Perhaps, also, our athletic experiences will encourage us to play fair in a world which throws out penalties as heartlessly as any referee, yet which scores high for every goal achieved. Then, our constructive activities in school, con- cerning us with such as the gavel, the yearbook, and the make-up, will hopefully represent that which we shall contribute to the world we are about to enter. In this Beverlega we have recorded the tangible symbols of our years at Beverly High School. ENGLISH English is the study of communications, written and oral, and an introduction to the humanities. The Eng- lish Department of Beverly High School, directed by Mr. Edward Watts, offered speech, grammar, litera- ture, and composition to students in college prepara- tory, general, or business courses. The obiectives of the English Department were to provide an intro- duction to good literature and to develop an ability for oral and written communication in students. Mem- bers of the department also supervised the schooI's three publications. The literary magazine, Aegis, was directed by Mr. Edward Watts and Mrs. Helena Cor- bett for the first half of the year and for the second half year by Frances Trowt. The yearbook, Beverlega, was supervised by Miss Isabel Harriman, and the B.H.S. News was edited by Mr. Emery Hollerer. The Dramatic Club was supervised by Miss Catherine Hanf. 1 t,:.'JQ G. KINNALY J. National physical fitness tests, given in coniunction with the President's Physical Fitness Program, showed certain phases in which Beverly area students needed exercise. The department then concentrated on these phases to completely fulfill the requirements of the tests. Class activities such as sports, gymnastics, and dancing for the girls were supplemented by the Girls' Intramural Club, and interscholastic sports such as boys' and girls' basketball, football, hockey, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track. 4.1 Boys increase their physical stamina by practic ing various exercises, including situps. ti! I9 LIBRARY As the population of Beverly High School increased, the library also increased in size and value. Co-operating with the Beverly Public Library, our school library was an invaluable source of material for research papers, as well as a supplement for daily classwork. This year many new books were added to the library, while magazine and newspaper subscriptions also expanded the library's resources. Mrs. Helen Willmott, the school librarian, instructed sophomore students in the use of the library and provided valuable assistance as students X searched for information to supplement their education. In Ng, addition, senior girls serving as library aids provided assist- ' 1: ance by doing clerical work at the desk. The library also provided a place to display various exhibits prepared by it outside organizations, students, and the library staff itself. B.H.S.'S CORE OF K OWLEDGE 'HR 11: I ll-I' Ni- -isis.. The language reading room, located in a library conference room, contained foreign language reading material to aid students in their study of a foreign country, language and litera- ture. The language laboratory, helpful in preparing for College Boards, was used extensively by advanced students to improve their listening comprehension. L. l-lennessey is also a member of the language de- partment. I 1 I William Yarrison, Donna Tawse, Nancy Bradstreet and David Drown make use of the language laboratory to bolster their listening comprehension. M. STORY ,191 ttf? N. it , 44 , ,. We at Beverly High School have the Beverlega under the guidance and super- vision of Miss Isabel Harriman. The student members, chosen selectively by Miss Harriman on the basis of scholastic merit and recommendations, were divided into committees under the student leadership of Martha Cole and the respective committee chairmen. The photography committee under Nancy Whitmore supervised the taking of pictures, the copy committee under Candace MacArthur and faculty advisor, Miss Suzanne Bentley, wrote and proofread all written material, and the lay-out committee, headed by Eileen Brodsky, organized the dummy and copy sheets which became the finished yearbook. Art illustrations for the divider pages were designed by Betty Allen. Working with the various committees was the Beverlega busi- ness staff, divided into three basic sections - the typing committee supervised by Miss Constance Turlo, the subscription committee headed by Miss Evelyn Ricciardi, and the advertising committee led by Miss Margaret Miner. The Beverlega was the end result of the combination of hard work and much time put in by these staffs and their faculty advisors. The main purpose of the club's activities-to increase the student's appreciation, culturally and socially, of the German language-was achieved through the presentation of informal skits, tapes, use of popular German reading material, and a lecture by a German exchange student. Highlight of the cur- riculum was a field trip to Tivoli, the German festival sponsored by Boston University. BOTTOM ROW: P. Tannebig, L. Duncanson, S. Schwartz, R. Levy, L. Salter, K. Sangster, B. The leading pass receivers were Peter Johnson, Dave Tomeo, and Tom Lemire. Again the Beverly High School football squad was coached by Mr. Roy Norden assisted by Nlr. JUNIOR CLASS The Class of T965 has contributed talent and energy in making B.I-I.S. a school to be proud ot. Beginning our sophomore year with curiosity, anxiety, and ex- citement, we gradually adiusted to the pattern of school life. As iuniors we distinguished ourselves ,in school activities. Class leaders were Richard Wallace, Peter Johnson, Gail Shepard, Susan Swan, and Joseph Forti. Many ot us were members of BEVERLEGA, AEGIS, the Math Team, Choraleers, and Beverlaires. David Tomeo, Glenn Townsend, Robert Norris, Marshall Stan- ton, Steve Davison, and James Gilligan ranked among the outstanding athletes. Planning tor college and careers became increasingly important as the year progressed. Now we were ready to accept the role of leadership from the graduating class, as we looked forward to our Senior Year. JUNIOR BEVERLEGA STAFF BOTTOM ROW: E. Donahue, V. Mitchell, J. Turner, G. SOPHOMORE CLASS Now that June is here, we, the class of l966, take time to reflect upon our first year. While furthering our knowledge in such by stubborn combination locks, confusing one-way stairways, and ignorance of the rules of the school, we have adapted to the unfamiliar surroundings. Our time has been well-spent in our first year. While furthering our knowledge in such fields as biology, mathematics, languages, and business education, we attained com- mendable goals in scholarship. At the same time, members of our class participated in and supported extracurricular activities in- cluding sports, assemblies, the talent show, student council, and clubs. Under the guid- ance of our class officers and executive board, we conducted a class dance for the benefit of the entire student body. Having completed a rewarding sophomore year, we are eagerly anticipating the chal- Ienge of the future and our next two years at B.l-l.S. 76 SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS BOTTOM ROW: N.
