Their unselfish Willingness to Work for others has Won the affection of us all. We extend to them our sincere thanks and Wish them long life and hap- piness. Eiiicienc yPI TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1951: I want to tell you a dramatic incident in the life of Abraham Lincoln which greatly influenced him. Lincoln's stepmother, Sarah Bush Lincoln, was a fine, understanding woman who recognized the great potentialities in the young Abraham. In spite of the life of grinding poverty which the Lincoln family had to endure, Mrs. Lincoln wisely encouraged her young stepson in every way to develop the great powers which were within him. When as a young man he prepared to leave home to go to the State Legislature where he was to begin his political career, she faced him in their rough, crude, frontier home, put her arms on his shoulders and from the depths of her heart cried out, Abe, be somebody! . Abe Lincoln never forgot this fervent wish, this great challenge. All too few of us ever attain the stature of Abraham Lincoln, but all of us have to a greater or to a lesser degree the powers and talents within us to lead useful and fruitful lives. Developing well adjusted, attractive personalities, establishing happy and satisfying family relationships, doing an honest day's work in jobs well suited to us, earning the respect and approval of those people with whom we work and play, and contributing generously of our time and money to help make a better world are ways in which each one of us can be somebody . My wish at graduation time for each one of you is this same desire which Sarah Lincoln had for young Abe so many years ago. Sincerely. WILLARD H. SMITH Principal 10 5Hz1ru11g MR. A few weeks later Mr. Belmore, Miss Carraher, and Miss Brown were ap- pointed our class advisors. The results of our first election were: Richard Carr, president of the class, Robert Hayes, vice president: Robert MacLeod, secretary: and Fred Bucci, treasurer. The men were in charge this year! The Student Council election was so close we had to have a recount and another election. The final outcome was the election of Mary Him, Fred Bucci, Richard Carr, Robert Hayes, Iames White, and Annette Fortunato. Our first dramatic presentation, Charity Ball, starred Muriel McLean, lane Povah, Donald Kenney, Iean Barry, Bruce Wilkinson, and Dean Zeilon. Muriel McLean won the award as best actress. Our 1948 football season, in which Beverly was undefeated, will go down in B. H. S. history. Because of their great achievement Fred Bucci, Richard Carr, Bob Hayes, Ioe Maglio, Lore Frost, Ioe Ambrefe, Nate Winer, and Wayne Raymond were given a trip to Florida. VICTORIAN PERIOD Now upperclassmen, we were ready to start our second successful year in September, 1949. A girl, Annette Fortunato, joined our class officers as secretary. An outstanding event of our junior year was our winning of the Drama- Night Award for the play, BECKY SHARP. The cast consisted of Iean Barry. Richard Hazell, Eleanor Hawthorne, Kenneth Kulberg, and lack Rothbard, who received an award for his acting. The Hockey Hop , sponsored by the juniors, proved to be a success. Awards were given to the outstanding players of the Danvers and Beverly teams. Special mention should be given to Carol Wade for her poem, My Friend, which was published in the THE NATIONAL ANTHOLOGY OF HIGH SCHOOL POETRY. tContinued on page 1253 73 Q, D .Nf J A W 6 STE Z? Iohn Maloney Carol Wade Charles Hogan 76 Glletmi lgrnphrrg I t p ... f 1 -...Zi ANNOUNCER: And now station WBHS presents an exclusive interview with the leading candidate for president, Richard Carr, by your reporter, Dean Zeilon. ZEILON: Ladies and gentlemen of the radio audience-tonight, instead of having Dick give a campaign speech, I have asked him to tell us any news he may have of our 1951 classmates at Beverly High School. CARR: As a matter of fact, Dean, I see some of the old class every day. Fred Bucci, who is in the pro-football off-season, is my campaign manager. Mrs. Bucci, nee Bet Obear, is assisting him. Eleanor Hawthorne and Annette Fortunato are my very efficient secretaries, and I would be lost without my errand boy, Phineas Elbling. My head press agent, Bruce Wilkinson, directs the able staff of George King, photographer, and Ernie Tucker, writer. I'm sure you have read of the would-be senators, Bob Hayes, lim White, Mary Him, Donald Kenney, and Bruce Miller. As I drive through the country on tour, my Winslow car always gets good service at Iim Donlon's chain of gas stations. Al Manzi, Vito Tanzella, Don Saunders, Phil Haefner, Gordon Hall, Lawrence Terry, Iohn Barter, Richard Dunn and Walter Gardner all manage branch stations. ZEILON: It's good to hear you're so well taken care of. Speaking of service, what did you think of Bill Burns's new catering business at your banquet? CARR: I really enjoyed more the entertainment program which was headed by Iohn Maloney's Number l band. His aggregation includes Iimmy Hoar, Dick Wilkinson, Carol Robbins, Bert LePage, and Carol Wade. The dancing of those 'famous girls from Lore Frost's Club 220, Marion McRae and lean White, and the singing of Mildred Cann brought back old memories of the talent shows we used to enjoy. I went back to the high school yesterday to see how things have changed and I was greeted at the door by the principal, Nate Winer, who took me 77 around the building. My first surprise was to see Charlie Hogan at Mr. Belmore's desk in room 204. Previously he had taught at the University of Miami with Professor Richard Gourdeau. I noticed that Charlie was using a new reference book written by Iames Dooling, published by the Don Hiller and Bob Cook Company. It was not an ordinary text: the title was Achieve- ments of the- Class of '5l. Dooling has noted the accomplishments of many of our classmates such as Dick Hiltunen, Walter Fowler, and Dick Atwater, who had just finished a cruise around the world in their yacht, The Amercana. accompanied by sailors, Charlie Hull, Ray Robb, Bill Graffam, Art Ober, and Ioe Maglio. The day they reached home port, Mel Giles was busy setting a new trans-Atlantic speed record. Continuing the tour around the school, I noticed Carol Ruest conversing in Spanish in 202: Muriel McLean teaching Latin in 201, Normand Caron parlez- ing in 219: English teachers-Ianet Merry, Ronda Gamble, and Ianet Bartley -holding classes in rooms 218 to 215: and Russell Tupper teaching history in 205. On the third floor Wayne Raymond was teaching physics assisted by chemist Warren O'Neill: in the cooking room I found lane Povah and Lucy Bussone as dietitians. Principal Winer said that lean Barry, star of several Broadway productions, is now dramatic coach and Donald Broughton is in- structing an oral interpretation class. Bob MacLeod is the physical ed. instruc- tor for the boys and Iudy Lewis handles the girls' department. Carol Gardner and Shirley Landergren were trying to explain the vivisection of frogs in the biology labs and Merinda Bonjorno was teaching sewing in the home economics department. Marilyn Anderson and Vivian Cotti are the B. H. S. librarians. The chief janitor, Normie Donavan, is assisted by Carl Larcom. I found Nancy Worrall, Barbara Barbati, and Donald Farnham as the guidance directors. I faked a little sickness after I walked by the nurses' office and saw Helen Grant and Ioan Cameron looking very cute in their white uniforms. Assisting them were Sheila Walsh and Ioan Pizzelo, as medical secretaries. Decorating the walls by the front office were famous art works sent from Paris by the celebrated artist, Dot Moody. Working in the office were Ioan Durkee, Claire Stewart, and Barbara Iones. After chatting with them, I put in a telephone call and recognized the operator's voice as Norma Lefavour's: she said at the switchboard with her were Myrna Post, Pat Durgin, lean Montevecchi, and Marlene Morse. 78 Suddenly famished, I wandered down to the cafeteria cmd there I saw the manager, Dorothy Ballantine, and her assistants, Eleanor Sellenger, Bunny Scotti, Ioan Veator, and Gerry Vitale. After leaving the cafeteria, I stopped to see the head of the business educa- tion department, Faith Charland. The other business education teachers are Shirley Ambrose, Gloria Scoglio, Iohn Iaworski, Roger Deschenes, Betty Dodge, and Betty Grothaus. To complete my tour I went to the Trade School, where a few of my old acquaintances were filling the teaching positions. Iohnny Bowles was teaching pattern-making and working with him were Leon Thibault, Ronnie Surles, Iohn DeSantis, and Richmond Bailey. Back in the shop were Francis Pitreau and Iames Mahoney. Leaving the Trade School, I noticed that the girls' soft- ball field has been made over into a baseball diamond enclosed by one of Kenneth Collins's special fences. A game was going on at the time and I noticed Bob DiRubio, Iordie Baker, Iock Ambrefe, Ray Poor, and Bill Ventura were members of the squad. Eddie Mazzetta was managing the team and Arnie Tarlow was acting as the chief water boy. ZEILON: Say, Dick, you did see quite a few of the old gang at B. H. S. What about some of the others? CARR: Well, Dean, as I left the high school, I walked to Gloucester Cross- ing and discovered Ruth Norbaka and Gerry Santin as hostesses in the Miss Beverly Diner. Across the street in the florist shop were Ioe Williams and Frank DeCarlo, and Kenny Hamilton was busy on the deliveries. Next door I noticed a garage operated by Fred Young and Clifford Swaine. A cute novelty shop interested me: it is owned and operated by Priscilla Grimes. She is selling jewelry Chand-fashionedl by Ioan Desjardins: her display work is by Iessie DeCesare and the buying is done by Rose Pasquarelli. I found that Allan Gillis and Ralph O'Brien are the new managers of the First National and Emma Sabatini is operating a new beauty salon with Lucille St. Pierre and Louise Richards as associates. Next, I entered the unique photography shop of Ernie Lang and Al Commerford. Guess who was the photographers' model? That's Wright, Gloria! The grand opening of the Unicorn Book Shop was taking place and I stopped in to congratulate the owners, Edie Thompson, and her clerks, Iune MacLeod and Adele Cantone. Continuing down Cabot Street, I was attracted by music from the Whirl-Away Dancing Studio of Iohnny Makros and Marilyn Mackenzie, two able instructors. Peggy Nelson has 79 opened a new piano studio in the same building. As I hurried on my way, I met Lois Iernberg, walking two of her dogs from her famous kennels. David Kinsella is the vet for her thoroughbreds. Behind her, I spied several old married couples getting into a car to celebrate Cinnie Cushing Wier's wedding anniversary. I recognized Marilyn Davis Ploss, Ella Morgan Young, and Betty Morse Cook. Operating a new sporting goods store were Bob Bradley, Dick Iohnson, and Paul Ienness. Myrtle and Marjorie Merrill run a stationery store next door. Can you guess who is running the Tiny Tot Baby Shop? Yes, it's Iudy Flynn, aided by Iune Knight, Lorriane Crateau. and Dot Lindsdau. In the local law firm of Carpenter and Hovey, I found quite a staff of secretaries, in- cluding Charlotte Smith, Shirley Williams, Betty Mercer, Priscilla Mahan, Gerry Andreas, and Claire Lansol. A little thirsty by this time, I stopped in at the new ice cream stand operated by Dianne Moore, Mary Maloof, Eleanor Hitchings, and Norma Trask. Dianne told me that Trudy Cassola and Pat Barry are swimming instructors at the Y and Herbert French is guardian of the pool table. Guess who has taken over the new Times office? Cinnie Foshay is the new editor and she is assisted by a very large staff including Elaine Peters, car- toonist: Kenny Kulberg, sports editor: Mary Olive Byrnes, lovelorn columnist: and Sally Abbott, lane Watson, and Ann Ritchie, business managers. Walk- ing into the drugstore owned by Ronnie Hyde, I picked up a Theatre Arts and read about cz new Broadway hit starring Dick Hazell, Ioyce Brewer, and Carol Robinson. The words and music were written by Iudy Toomey. The costumes were designed by Betty Clarke and Norma DiGenova. Some V. I. P.'s at the opening were Morris Chucas, Mervin Pomroy, Richard Marcheterre. William Leck, Robert Hall, and Donny Lally. ZEILON: Say, Dick, I heard that some Beverlyites are working in Boston. Have you bumped into any on your tour? CARR: As a matter of fact, Dean, guess who the train conductor was? It was Donnie Larrabee. In North Station I just had to ask for some directions when I saw the pretty girl at the information booth-Peggy Malone. Happy to sell me a ticket to New York was my old friend, Chet Nyman. Before I left Boston, however, I walked through the Common where I met some of the secretaries of local law firms: Pat Duffy, Nancy Wilson, Lorraine O'Brien, Claire MacLeod, and Caroline Baskowski. They were feeding peanuts to the squirrels. Working in department stores were Catherine Auld, Elsie Camevale. 80 and Anna Fleming. In the shipping department of Iordan March are George Rossi, Thomas Barry, Anthony Coppola, and Ioseph Tetrault. ZEILON: I have some information on our Service men and women. Iune McCormack joined the Wacsp Philip Kirrane and Robert O'Brien, the Navy: Bill Pelley, the Air Force: Leo Foss and Francis Regan, the Marines: and Dick MacPhail, the Army. CARR: Some new secretarial colleges have been opened too, Dean. Have you heard about Burnet, operated by Barbara Ball and her able assistants, Iean Moroni, Pat Ioyce, lean Bertucci, and Joanne Bossie? The second Katherine Bell is under the direction of Greta Kallstrom: and her assistants are Gail Robinson, Sally Sherman, Ioanne Rogers, and Mary Mazzetta. lack Durrell is running competition with the girls. His school is Iohn Gibbs and his in- structors are Mildred Donahue, Sylvia DeSantis, Anna DiPiero, and Iune Browning. At Massachusetts General Hospital are nurses Nancy Stone, Marcia Hadley, and Pat Laughlin. At Beverly Hospital I found Frances Cunningham, Marie Barbara, Barbara Vincent, and Marcia Baker. Shirley Stover is the director of the School of Nursing and the two new doctors are Barbara Burnham and Stephen Sanchez. Working at the hospital are social workers Barbara Todreas and Sally Flynn. ZEILON: What about some of the boys in the science field, Dick? CARR: Well, Shermie Goulding and Donnie Cooper are geologists: the three top men in engineering are Dave Gardner, Ioe Mulligan, and David Pierce. Dick Picone is a government meteorologist. Oh, yes, when I flew from New York to Boston, Neil Landers, Adelaide Hendricks, and Virginia Lee were fellow passengers. The hostesses were Shirley Daniels and Pat Donovan. I am told Arthur Crosby, Harold Le Page, and Arthur DePaulo have opened a new garage and that Ioe Falloni, Frank Albano, Fred Acciavatti, and Dudley Davis do a super job in the mechanics department. Some new patternmakers in town are Douglas Bezanson, George Lindroth, and Billy Dawson. Doing printing work are Bill Hutchinson, Lewis Foss, and Paul MacNutt. Other crafts- men are carpenters Bob Byrne and Bob Kimball. I ZEILON: Dick, do you know that B. H. S. grads have gone into specialized fields? Roland Damiani and Cynthia Silver are college instructors. Marilyn Goldberg is a foreign trade secretary, and lane McElhiney is instructing in 4-H work. Phil Williams is a drum major at Michigan State! 81 CARR: Yes, and have you heard who owns that mammoth estate in Beverly Farms? It's our retired business man, Norm Cassola. Alberta Iones is the govemess for his children and Bob King is managing the grounds and land- scaping. ZEILON: I've really enjoyed hearing about the old gang from B. H. S. It's good to learn that my wishes for their success have corne true. I'm sure they'll join me now. Dick, just as they did in '51, in voting for Carr for president. May your term in office result in as many fine works as it did then. This is Dean Zeilon signing off for W B H S. Good night. BEVERLY - MASS Gilman ihiainrg lrnntj CContinued from page 73D MODERN PERIOD September returned again and we entered Beverly High as the all-important seniors. Richard Carr. president, Robert Hayes, vice president, and Annette Fortunato, secretary, were joined by a new treasurer, Dick Hazell, On Drama Night the senior class Thespians were Kenneth Kulberg, Dick Hazell, Barbara Barbati, and lean Barry, who won the Best Acting Award. We sponsored the Valentine Dance which was very profitable and which was enjoyed by many. Barbara Burnham was elected to fill a vacancy on the Student Council. At an assembly, Iudy Lewis, Ioe Maglio, Ioe Ambrefe, Pat Donovan, Bob Hayes, and Iune MacLeod all had a good lesson in roller skating-especially Ioe Ambrefe. During the year we appreciated the guidance given by various speakers who helped us plan our future. We thank Miss Carter, Miss Markey, Miss Lyons, Miss Griffin, Miss Brown, and their staffs for making this yearbook possible. And so our days at Beverly High are ended: now we can only reminisce.
