SMITH Principal 270 the Members of I 6 611155 of 7950: Whatever your present thoughts and emotions may be on the eve of your high school graduation, I would urge you throughout life to keep in mind and strive to meet great challenges which can help you make the most of your lives. What are some of these great challenges? I am thinking especially of the following: 1. The challenge of character. Beverly and every other community need men and women of great integrity and of high moral and ethical character, men and women who are honest with themselves and others and who are clean in thought, word, and deed. Working together actively with other like-minded men and women in the church or synagogue of one's choice can be an effective way of meeting this challenge. 2. The challenge of citizenship. The good citizen is the man who has a useful job best suited to his own abilities and interests and who uses his income wisely for himself and his family. The good citizen takes as active a part as possible in promoting good government on the local, state, national and, international levels. 3. The challenge of service. Loved and respected is the man or woman who with no thought of financial gain says the kind word or does the good deed to help relative, friend, or neighbor or to advance the good work being done by the church, civic, or fraternal organization ofwhich he is a member. Giving of oneself in service to others is one of the noblest activities a man may pursue in life. 4. The challenge of tolerance. The tolerant man is one who respects his fellow man notwith- standing his class, color, or creed and who has as his great ideal the brotherhood ofall men. Out of the crew four oflicers were cited. They were George Accomando, Com- mander of the fleet, john Farrell, Lt. Commander, Elinor Dwyer, Chief Steward, and Shirley Dion, Pursor. Weathered the gale-first report cards. The crew presented the skit, The Wraith of Wrath. Members of the crew who were in this skit were the following: Paul Lester, Charles Hiltunen, janet Lawler, Jeannette Surles, Dick Lebel, Thomas Grady, Dick Norris, andjean Godbout. janet Lawler received the best acting award. Boarded S.S. Student Council for spring prom. Very successful. Frannie Story's orchestra. Things relatively quiet until june. Dockedjune 25A75 day leave. Second Voyage. New Admiral aboard-Mr. Smith. Adjusted and capable crewmen. Crew cited the following officers: George Accomando, Harold Ransom, Elinor Dwyer, and Shirley Dion. Ship had an excellent football crew. Outstanding game was with S.S. Gloucester High School. Crewmen did a wonderful job. Crew presented Goodnight Please. Cast included Irma Russell, Paul Lester janet Lawler, john McKenna, Tom Grady, Dick Lebel, and Jeannette Surles. john McKenna received best-acting award. April 22 May May 15 june june 15 june 17 June 24 1949 Sept. 7 Oct. Oct. 15 Oct. Oct.-Nov. Dec. 9 jan. Feb. 11 Feb. April june june 16 Senior Executive Committee Again met and boarded S.S. Student Council. All enjoyed this cruise! Skipper Preston appointed four crewmen to act as marshals when 1st class seamen received their stripes. They were the following: George Accomando, Elinor Dwyer, Jean Stapledon, and Ben Bowden. Outstanding golf team. State champions. Hurricane. Severe exams-few of crew washed overboard. Senior Assembly: Awards to crewmen. jean Stapledon received a book for being an outstandingjunior girl. Fred Clapp took over the post as Captain of the Student Council. Ben Bowden became head of the traffic squad. Manyjuniors ushered at the Senior reception. A colorful event! Came into port. Another 75 day leave. Third Voyage. Important year ahead. Oilicers appointed: George Accomando, Dominic Abate, Elinor Dwyer, and Dick Lebel. Important visitor aboard, Charles Laughton. Cross Country team State Champions. Crew again had successful football squad. Many crewmen did exceptional work. Drama Nightx The Curtain. Cast: Helen Noyes, Paul Lester, Margaret Low, Dick Lebel, and Tom Grady. Margaret Low received best-acting award. Basketball crew really hitting the deck. New coach aboard. Senior Social. Skipper Preston, along with his mates, Miss Ray and Miss Sakrison, planned suc- cessful social. Senior homerooms chiefs were chaperones. Miss Watters, Miss Markey, and Miss Carter working diligently on Senior Year Book. Senior Play-Perfect cast. Banquet and reception to be marveled at even years later! We never thought that they'd be at our reunion. Poor Mr. Preston looked so seasick. Then we started our search for the rest of the class of fifty, The years have been good to our classmates and they are all just as handsome as they were ten years ago. There was Admiral William Ambrose giving orders to Bill Neve, Ronnie and Bill Kirby, Lawrence Shaw, Bob Marshall, Frannie Courchene, Elmer Dawson,john Dunham, Ronald Hall, and Bill Flynn, members of his frightened crew. Smugly watch- ing the proceedings was Commander Richard Currier ofthe Naval Research Headquarters. He told us that the builder of this ship was the illustratious john Paddol and the navi- gator, none other than Alden Norman. Feeling hungry, we went down to the galley to see what was cookin'. There was Frances Murray with a chef's hat on talking to the dietitians Peggy McGloin and Anne Hutchinson, and the new owner of Club 21, Pete Moliviatis. As we went top- side, we bumped into Robert Lewis, the new manager of the Hood's plant in Salem. We were rescued from falling by George Accomando and his lovely wife, the former Tillie Clarke. We were sure that the class president could tell us what some of the other kids were doing, and that he did. He was to be the M.C. for our show that night since he had taken Milton Berle's place as the Television King. He told us that the playboy Bill Ransom had brought his famous chorus line with him. In it were some of our old school chums:jean Godbout, Mary Lee, Nasha Pappas,-Jackie Morse, and jane Fitzgerald. We wondered how his wife, the former Mary Lane, liked that. We were also lucky in having Larry Cippolone and his orchestra with us. Ronnie Bovio, the collosal drummer man, is still with the band, along with Melvin Eklund, Bernie Cristoforo, and Lincoln Stuart. Mickey Abate, the crooning quarter- back, sang. He has become quite the swoon king! The famous disc jockey and ac- cordion player, Lou Datillo, was part' of the great show along with his assistant, Art Edwards. George told us thatjudy Bell would not be with us because of her concert at Carnegie Hall, and that Robert Atwood is away with a big name band. We heard quite a commotion and some of our better known athletes came on deck. Don Mitchell is now the star of the Boston Bruins, and Al Berman pitches for the Washington Senators. Don Campbell is now the coach of the Celtics since he is not yet tall enough to play for them. john Spiridigliozzi has not been so fortunate as he is still the coach of the Beverly Farms team. While these boys are working hard playing, Bob Entwistle, the peppy sports writer works for Fred Clapp, the editor of the New York Timer. Also making money in the sports line are Vic Menesale, football coach at Notre Damegjim Pettipas, basketball coach at B. U., Bill Hedin, swimming coach at the University of Miami, Charlie Kessaris, baseball coach at U.C.L.A.g and the famous stock car driver, Bob Fielding. 'l52l On the deck, we ran into some of the married couples spooning. Jean Staple- don has become the wife of Dick Price and has four little Price-tags. Also there were the former Betty Smith, now Mrs. Phil Dodge, Janice Worrall, now Mrs. John Trues- dale, Nancy Guething, now Mrs. Art Landers, Mrs. Bob Haskell fEleanor Grahamj, Jackie White, now Mrs. Richard Field, Ruth Watson, now Mrs. Walter Hayes, andJoan Woodbury, now Mrs. Pete Liberti. Among the others that are now enjoying wedded bliss are Pat Goodrow, Pauline Grondin, Lois Draper, Jackie Fissette, Cynthia Low, Lorraine Allen, Almira Petrosino, and Catherine Buckley. After breaking away from the happily-married couples and the equally happy bachelors, George told us about the intelligentsia of our class. Peggy Low, R.N., B.S.,and P.D.Q., is now superintendent of nurses at Massa- chusetts Memorial Hospital. The food was really good and we didn't forget to compliment the chef. While we were walking down the deck, we overheard some words about bosses. Who else has words about bosses but their secretaries? 'l54l Some of our friends have become engineers. They are: Earljohnson and Fred Burns, civil engineers, Robert Grout, an industrial engineer, and Vincent Terry, an aeronautical engineer. As we continued on our way, we saw Diane Sterman, the taxi heiress who has broken a million hearts, talking to Paulina Carlson, our C.P.A., and the two boys from G.E., Alan White and Frank Williams, draftsmen. Of course we had to send some of our boys to the Shoe. It wouldn't be fair if we didn't. They are: Walter Howard, in the office, William Barter, Henry Pinciaro, and Bob Kent, sheetmetal workers, and Gordon Morse and Richard Silva, patternmakers. Moving along we saw some of our female members of the fleet including: Dorothy Greene, Pauline Haibon, and Helen Hajdys, all Waves. By then it was fairly late, but some of our theatrical people were just coming on board from their evening performances on Broadway. We find that they are: janet Lawler, whose latest role is Lady Macbeth opposite Paul Lester, Helen Noyes, whose latest role is opposite Bill Stone in Who Kicked The Bucket? a mystery thriller by Irma Russell. The stage manager for this great presentation is Carl Foster assisted by Bob Drinkwaterg the wardrobe mistresses are june Skoglund and Lucille Sciola. The beautiful costumes were designed by Carole Cantyg the business manager is that cleverj ohn Rowell and the sitting-down supervisor of all work is Brother Poor. The play is being presented at the new theater, The Pestilence, owned by Ed Morin. Joanne Morse is the ticket seller and William Smith the head usher. Selling candy in the luxurious lobby are Norma Shepard and Elizabeth Stanton. The most important person in the show is the backer, the wealthy engineer, Tom Rapisarda. We musn't forget the hard working stage crew and carpenters that keep the beautiful sets designed by Barbara Chick Donnelly in good order. They are: Charles Boucher, Gail Barton, Robert Brown, Roland Moody, Vincent Freeman, Henry Gauthier, and Dick Drown. Every night after the show Floyd Swanson, accountant deluxe, counts the money while Austin Cole stands by with his gun. At the end of the evening, the Good Ship B.H.S. pulled into her dock to be put in mothballs until the Class of '50 meets again. We heard a commotion on the gang- plank. There they were, the two classmates from whom we had not heard-Tom Dono- van, the youngest retired millionaire in the world, and Charlie Tenenbaum, the sophisti- cated, intellectual hobo. Our cruise was over and everyone accounted for. It was fun. We're wondering now what we'll have to report in 1970. After we mastered the lockers, the corridors, and the stairways, we felt ourselves a really important part of B.H.S. Soon, Mr. Belmore, Miss Carraher, and Miss Brown were appointed our class ad- viers. Helped tremendously by these teachers, we Sophomores got our first election underway. Richard Carr was elected president of the class, Robert Hayes, vice presidentg Robert McLeod, secretaryg and Fred Bucci, treasurer. It was certainly a man's year! Quite a battle arose during the election for Student Council members. Because of the narrow margin of votes, we had to have a recount and another election. Finally, Mary Him, Fred Bucci, Richard Carr, Robert Hayes,-james White, and Annette Fortunato were elected. On Drama Night, Muriel McLean, jane Povah, Donald Kenney,Jean Barry, Bruce Wilkinson, and Dean Zeilon starred in Charity Ball, the first play presented by the Sophomore class. Muriel McLean won the award as best actress. The football season of 1948 will undoubtedly go down in history, for B.H.S. had an undefeated season. The lucky boys, Fred Bucci, Richard Carr, Bob Hayes, joe Maglio, Lore Frost, joe Ambrefe, Nate Winer, and Wayne Raymond enjoyed the trip to Florida given to the football players. Gloria Wright, Helen Grant, Mary Him, Cynthia Cushing, and Annette Fortunato were chosen cheerleaders for the 1949-1950 season. Our second September found us somewhat less bewildered, and we were all ready to start another successful year. The guiding lights of our junior year were the same as those of the previous year ex- cept for Annette Fortunato, who was elected secretary. Perhaps the highlight of ourjunior year was the winning of the Drama Night Award for the play Berhy Sharp. .jean Barry, Richard Hazell, Eleanor Hawthorne, Kenneth Kul- berg, and jack Rothbard, who received the honor of having been the most outstanding actor, gave their time and effort towards this play. The Hockey Hop, sponsored by thejuniors, proved novel and profitable. Awards were given to the outstanding players of the Danvers and Beverly teams. Special mention should be given to Carol Wade for her poem, My Friend, which was published in The National Anthology of High School Poetry. We Juniors are looking forward to another enjoyable and educational fwe hopej year when we shall be the all-important Seniors! l60l' On September 7, 1949, the class of 1952, lowly Sophomores, entered Beverly High. The first month here was rather discouraging. To the amusement ofjuniors and Seniors, our lockers refused to open and we were continually getting lost. Soon, however, we found ourselves. One of the first important events to take place was the election of class officers. These honors were given to Richard Cunningham,president, james McPherson, vice president, Martha Kenney, secretaryg. and Charles Scobey, treasurer. The play we presented at Drama Night, Bird on the Wing, was a great success. Nancy Thomas, the leading lady, was chosen the most outstanding actress. For the Thanks- giving assembly the Sophomore Dramatic Club contributed a play called Don't Call Mej unior, which everyone enjoyed very much. The Sophomore class has been represented in many sports here at Beverly High. We have taken part in hockey, basketball, track and football not only as players but as loyal spectators. Next year as juniors we hope to play an even more important role in school affairs. As upper classmen we shall try to distinguish ourselves at Beverly High. C. 35 Beverly 17 - Haverhill 39 In the divisional meet of the Middlesex League at Haverhill, B. S. avenged its earlier defeat by Arlington by beating them out for second place in a lield of six teams. Water- town on the other hand was still ahead of Beverly and turned the trick again a week later in the league meet at Tufts. Beverly walked off with the championship of Class B in the state meet while Water- town, as expected, won the Class A crown. Then, climaxing the season, came the New England meet which included fourteen complete schools and many individual runners.
