Like the resourceful leaders of the covered-wagon trains which trekked across the nation a century ago, our Class Adviser has faithfully guided the Forty- Niners on their long road to graduation. Bridging the rivers of Sophomore worries with patience and understanding, braving the deserts of junior problems with reserve and initiative, scaling the mountains of myriad Senior troubles with sympathy and genuine sincerity, Miss Griffin has won the respect and admi- ration of her student followers. Now the journey is over, the end of tlze school trail is in sight. These travel- ing Forty-Niners will go their way, exchanging the close associations of school life for new friends and interests. But as these members separate, they will have one common share-memories of B. H. S. and you, Miss Griffin. In future years your pleasant manner and warm smile will continue to guide the Class of 1949. You have achieved a goal which many young men and women, even in Amer- t ica, never reach. For you to succeed. there has been hard work and sacrifice on your part: there has been love and encouragement from your parents, there has been friendly assistance and ad- , vice from your teachers. You have reason to be thankful for the success your efforts have brought and for the help you have received from others Fm al .glllifg along the way. Our United States needs intelligent, educated citizens to be a strong, democratic nation. I hope that as the years go by each of you as individual citizens will increasingly be influential in helping to build a better community, a better state, a better nation. I hope that you too will see the meaning of democracy so well expressed by Howard Hartzell, a high school student in Chautau- qua, New York, when he wrote: I speak for democracy. It is worth defending, maintaining. and recreating. , Democracy is the right of every man to know himself, to function to his capacity, to hold fast those things he values, to be governed by his representatives, and to dream the dreams which will become for a dynamic people the reality of tomorrow.
