Senior Class Officers History of Class of 1944 Hy NANCY HORD When our class entered the doors of Beverly High School that September morning in 1941. we felt that we were entering upon a new and exciting venture, but we little realized the good times, the hard work, and changes that were ahead of us. Wie numbered approximately 350 at the beginning of that year. Because many hav e left to join the services of our country or to take part in some useful war work, we have dwindled down to about 24-0. Wie have witnessed many changes around the school the past two years- in particular. the change of faces among the faculty. Our principal, llr. Pierce. stepped into the superintendent's position during llr. King's absence, and was succeeded by llr. Atkinson who came to us in September of 194-Q. He has proved himself to be a good friend and counselor to us. llanv teachers have left to be married: others have gone into all branches of the service. nie were sorry to see them go but were glad to welcome new friends into our midst. In order to prepare the boys for the armed services. new, special courses have been started emphasizing mathematics, aeronautics, radio, physics and gym. Also a Victory Corps has been installed. Blembers have been inducted into this organization at two very impressive ceremonies. During our Sophomore year we elected as officers: President, William llercaldil Vice President, Allen Elliott: Secretary, Nancy Hord: Treasurer, Polly Parker. The members of the Executive Committee were: Jane Howarth. chairman. Donald Carr, Wallace Bruce. The Student Service Committee consisted of: Phillip Carr, chairman, William Hoikala. Howard Keech, Vtilburta Bunker, and Frank Russo. 14

The annual Drama Night competition was held with our class proudly walking off with the banner. The one-act play was a comedy entitled, Blake Room for Rodney. The cast. consisted of Richard Lawrence, Lillian Horne, VVilburta Bunker, Sumner Peabody, Geraldine Snell, Helen Ginsberg, Gordon Hamilton, and Calvin Perkins. Richard Lawrence was chosen the best actor. The officers for the Junior year were: President, William MercaldigYice Pres- ident, Allen Elliott: Secretary, Polly Parker, and Treasurer, Nancy Hord. The Executive Committee was: Howard Keech, chairman, Robert Bresnahan, and Martha Tucker. Ralph Johnson as chairman, Phillip Farr, Phyllis fourchene, Ruth Glover, William Hoikala, Lillian Horne, VVilliam Morgan, and Joseph Standley made up the Social Vommittee. The members of the Student Service Vommittee Were: Donald Farr, chairman, Harold Foote, Mabel Him, Richard Lawrence, Jerry Snell, and Pearl Spear. Once again our class, as Juniors, was awarded the prize for the outstanding play of Drama Night. The cast was as follows: Richard Lawrence, Bessie Tibbetts, Anita Perrotta, William Mrirgan, Arlen Cohn, Wallace Bruce, and William Mfer- caldi. Bessie Tibbetts merited the gold pin for the best acting in the play, which was called Ghost Hunters. In June, at the Senior assembly, a very impressive serx ice was held inducting new members into the National Honor Society. The Junior members elected were Phyllis fourchene, Jean Fannon, Mabel Him, VVilliam Mercaldi. Nlartha Tucker, and Nancy Hord. Once again class officers and committees were chosen, this time for our Senior year. They were: President, Allen Elliott: Vice President, lVilliam lylercaldiz Secretary, Nancy Hord: and Treasurer, Jean f'annon. Our very efficient Executive Committee consisted of: Wallace Bruce, chair- man, Patricia Smith, Virginia Benham. Elinor Hart, Joseph Standley, and Ross Roberts. VVe owe much thanks to this committee for their splendid work during this busy Senior year. The members of the Social Fommittee were: Thomas Stokes, chairman, Jeanne VVells, Norma Fann, Gordon Hamilton, VVilliam Morgan, Laurie Sabine. Phyllis Fourchene, Jean Varpenter, May Andrews, and Betty Russell. The Student Service Fommittee was made up of six students: George Tozer. chairman, Lois Sherman, Henry Desmond, Geraldine Snell, Stuart lwackenzie, and Theresa Nlahoney. Although the field of sports has been gradually cut down, due to war-time conditions, many of the seniors have participated. The boys who have taken an active part are: Bob Hathaway, Phil Farr, Winston Naugler, Joe Felentano. Joe Cuoco, Sabino Modugno, Jerry Murphy, Doug Cram, Dan Tower. Fred Bresnahan, Gordon Allen, Bill Baker, Bill Mercaldi, Doug Nelson, Rock Shea, Robert McMahon, Stuart MacKenzie, Allen Elliott, Bennett Nlerry, James McElroy, Howard Keech, Red Harlow, Paul Harrington, Richard Steniford, Thomas Stokes, and Robert Goodell. Girls who have been prominent in basketball or field hockey are as follws: Helen Swanson, Muriel Muir, Mary Reid, Barbara Ricker, Mary Gorman, and Elinor Fielding. For the third time, we entered the competition on Drama Night, but this time we humbly gave up our first place and bowed to the Sophomores. The cast of Cfl0IZfZ'II1lFI1 on Page 761 15
