SENIORS Senior Class Officers History of Class of 1944 Hy NANCY HORD When our class entered the doors of Beverly High School that September morning in 1941. we felt that we were entering upon a new and exciting venture, but we little realized the good times, the hard work, and changes that were ahead of us. Wie numbered approximately 350 at the beginning of that year. Because many hav e left to join the services of our country or to take part in some useful war work, we have dwindled down to about 24-0. Wie have witnessed many changes around the school the past two years- in particular. the change of faces among the faculty. Our principal, llr. Pierce. stepped into the superintendent's position during llr. King's absence, and was succeeded by llr. Atkinson who came to us in September of 194-Q. He has proved himself to be a good friend and counselor to us. llanv teachers have left to be married: others have gone into all branches of the service. nie were sorry to see them go but were glad to welcome new friends into our midst. In order to prepare the boys for the armed services. new, special courses have been started emphasizing mathematics, aeronautics, radio, physics and gym. Also a Victory Corps has been installed. Blembers have been inducted into this organization at two very impressive ceremonies. During that year we elected our homeroom officers and delegates, we joined thc different clubs, amd became a real part of Beverly High School. lVhen Drama Night arrived, we presented Elmer and the Lovebugf' and although we did not win the coveted banner, we provided the audience with rollicking entertainment. William Floyd, who portrayed Elmer, received the prize for the best acting. Others in the cast included Barbara Haskell, Jane Brotchie, Estamarie Shea, Phyllis VVebber, Lucile Gove, Gwendolyn Leonard, Edward Flook, Warren Griffiths, hlarylou Buckley, and Richard Burr. In the various sports offered at Beverly High School many Sophomore boys and girls participated. At the end of our Sophomore year. we elected our Junior Class officers: President--Armand F ortunato Secretary-Erma lNIcLean Vice Presidente4John Carr Treasurer--Sally lNIcKay lVhen summer vacation came, and ended our activities, we all regretted leav- ing but we looked forward to a Junior year that would be as pleasant. In the drama night competition we presented the play Blow, Bugle, Blow,,', and though, again. we did not win the banner, our play was well received by all. The cast included: Marylotl Buckley, who won the prize for the best acting, Barbara Haskell, Phyllis Webber, Elaine Stuart, Warren Griffiths, and llarland Slaven. Our class of '45 was well represented in all the school sports. Those who went out for football were: Ralph Lewis, John Dooling, William Kelly, Robert Pelonzi, and Robert Hoar. The Junior boys who played basketball were: John Dooling and Eugene Lamontagne. The Juniors on the girls' basketball team were: Lorraine Anderson, Shirley Trask, and Anrette St. Pierre. hlembers of the Student Vouncil who are serving us so well are Sally lNIcKay Marylou Buckley, Erma McI.ean, Armand Fortunato, Helen Grant, and Robert Seanzani. Their duties will continue on into the Senior vear. We are proud of VVilbur Surles, Tom Ward, Emerson VVright, Cidney Rowell, Fred f'row, and Thomas Larson, who have answered the call of their country and are serving in different branches of the armed forces. The class of '45 is now looking forward to a Senior year, and anticipates an even more memorable one than our Junior and Sophomore years. 78 History of the Sophomore Class id By CONSTANCE BERNASCONI September 8, 1943, was a big day in the lives of the recent 3lQ Briscoe grad- uates. We were assigned to the third floor of the High School, which soon became a scene of bedlam. Lockers, combinations, new faces, strange teachers, all added to the confusion and turmoil. A common sight was that of a quavering Sophomore asking an imperialistic Senior where he was, or where to go. During our first quarter we became more established in our new surround- ings. ive organized as a class under the guidance of lVI1ss Higgins and elected our class officers: Robert LaPointe, President: Joseph Cressy, Vice President: Connie Bernasconi, Secretary, and Caroline VVyeth, Treasurer. Home Room oflicers and members of the House of Delegates were elected. Clubs were organized. Even more than last year, the Victory Corps has become an important function in the daily tasks of the students of B. H. S. Maiiy of us are doing our part by buying and selling war bonds and stamps, doing surgical dressings, letter writing, clerical aid, and other essential projects that go to make up the Victory Corps. This year Drama Night was a bright spot in our history, for we, the baby class, won the banner. The play was a farce entitled The Bard of Bakervillef' The east included Susanne Bowles, who was awarded the prize for the best acting. Warren Allen, Betty Edwards, Jean Birmingham, Horace Smith, Thelma Hardy, Edward Neve, and Sylvia C houinard who helped to make this the outstanding performance. We also made an impressive stand in football. Our contributions to the first team were Austin Hilton and Joe MacDougall. Richard Bernier, Francis Brother', Roberts, Robert Pasek, Victor Modugno, John BickerstaH, Robert Robinson Harry Munsey, Jack Murphy, Alfred Beaulieu, and Ralph Fiore, the subs, did their bit. Our own Jack Healy made the first team in basketball. The second team of sophomores consisted of Raymond Kelleher, Curtis Foster, Robert LaPointe, Leo Buckley, Joe MacDougall, and Robert Robinson. These boys gained much experience by going to out-of-town games. At this same time we find that Ramona Huard, Corinne Estes, Jean White, Laura DiFazio, Eleanor Hopkins, Barbara Mllrray. and Thelma Hardy should be f-redited for their ability in basketball. We look forward to a Junior year full of activities and as enjoyable as our Sophomore year has been. 79 Hutographs 80 w' 'fb '02 UJ ac MD , ', . .I Student Council v I -rout mir, lfjff ffl fliglffl Nlzirtha 'l'uelier. Every group of school pupils, whatever their age, is entitled to a student organization through which the opinion of the student body can be had on matters of interest to the school. This is necessary not only for democracy but also for the sake of student morale. for every group under the general authority of another group is always eager not only to make suggestions but to know the reasons behind regulations and customs. Our House of Delegates is the larger of the two bodies of student represent- atives, with each home room having a delegate. A suggestion felt by the House to be of value is referred to the appropriate committee for investigation. She understands and appreciates the importance of such human things as better eyes and cars. At Sylvania, a woman finds her kind of work for Victory- work she can do superlativcly well. YVith stepped-up war production, there are more women than ever employed in Sylvania plants. From their supple, flying fingers come incandescent and fluorescent lamps to light American war work - radio and electronic tubes vital to military and naval communications by land, sea and air. VVe have done everything possible to create a pleasant working environment for women W light and airy plants, wholesome food, scrupulously clean washrooms. We are rewarded when we see girls dress up,' to these surroundings, look and act more like college students than factory workers. VVe had our women employees in mind when we pioneered in flooding our work- rooms with music. And our theory that harmony would promote efficiency has been borne out by the production results. GIRLS WANTED to join others in working with verve for Victory. Apply from 8 A. BI. to 6 P. BI. at the Danvers Plant.
