Barb has a hobby of drawing, and likes ice skating, too, But she has a horror ol' house-work, a thing she will not do. 4511- ,lake Pat Bob Eu nie Barb Senior Class History This has certainly been an exciting and an eventful year for any Senior Class. ive started out with about 300 Seniors and the count taken again this April showed that there were only Q50 of us left. This means that about l6f7Q of our number are now serving Pncle Sam. Maiiy' other changes have been made in school life this year due to the calamity across that vast expense of water. New war subjects have been added. Courses have been changed. And even the atmosphere about the school is far more tense and exciting. At the half year the Senior Boys were given an opportunity to alter their course in favor of a war-time class. Some kept their regular curriculum but added the new war subjects thus circulating all of their studies and study periods. It was at the half year also that all the boys of 17 years of age or older were required to take five periods of physical education a week. About the only thing that changed for the girls was the ever growing decrease of boys in their classes. Toward the latter part of the year, that is about the mid lle of the third quarter, another new war program was introduced into Beverly High. This was the nation wide Victory Corps. Other than these added activities the Senior Class also went through its regular routine of electing oflicers, joining in the Drama Night Competition, giving a Class play, having its socials. and competing in the various sports. As to our Class officers who had a great responsibility on their shoulders we elected as presi- dent, VVilbur Hardy. As our vice-president we chose James Jameson. To be our secretary we elected Patricia Churchley. And for the class treasurer we voted for Hosamond Cole. The members of our Student Council had a great many important matters to decide upon this year. They have been about the most active council that we have had for a few years. The president of this select group, George Little, deserves much credit for his tact and initiative shown while in this responsible position. It makes the class feel as if they could not have elected a person any more suited for this office than he. Other senior members of the council who have served nobly are Nancy Hill, who is secretary: Lionel Belanger, and VVilbur Hardy. Yvillis Quimby and Stephen Fortunato are two of the many that have left school. llary Pet- ronzi o was elected to complete the unexpired term of Stephen Fortunato. Another group of Seniors who make a lot of decisions for the SeniorClass are the members of the Executive Committee. Ruth VVoodbury is chairman of this committee. The other members are VVillis Quimby. llary Petronzio, Yvilliam lNIorris, and Nlartin Kelly. The Student Service Committee is a group of students who unfortunately are hardly ever thought of after being elected by their classmates, yet they do a lot of work and really deserve much credit. The students in this group are Patricia VVoodward, Chairman: Robert York, Patricia Sim, and Nancy Dimond. So far this year we have had one Social and it was a very successful one. This lone Social was sponsored by the Senior Class. The Social Committee consists of Eileen Irving, as chairman: Robert Rogers. Cynthia Knight. Helen Cleveland. Kenneth Kinsman, Kenneth Clapp, and Robert Pitts. This year our Class for the third time competed in the Drama Night contest. VVe presented a humorous heart-warming drama with a cheerful Christmas setting. For the second consecutive year the gold medal for the best acting was most deservedly awarded to Patricia Yvoodward. Une of the traditional events of B. H. S. Senior Classes is the Class Play. Although this has not been put on up to the date of this write up, we feel confident that their production, Salad Days, will be well presented. Except for sports and extra curriculum activities which are coveredspecifieally in other sections of this book this completes the activities participated in by mem- bers of the Senior Class of 1943. 1521 Senior Play 4 v 3 5, 5 . We can recall how lowly we felt then before the high and cocky seniors who seemed always to be walking around with their chests out and their noses up in the air. VVhile we kept out of their way, we watched the slow but ever encouraging progress of our own humble class. We were indeed grateful that we were gifted with such an energetic, diligent, but patient Vlass llother, as 1IissTasker, to steer us through our trials. r Phe leaders that we had were also a credit to their classmates. In our Sopho- more year, when everything seemed to be in a turmoil, we chose some leaders. ive elected Nancy Hill as our president and to assist her we chose Daniel Kelleher as vice-president. Fynthia Knight as secretary, and Berverle Hull as our class treasurer. With the help and example of our leaders it did not take us long to get into the swing of things. Dur contribution to Drama Night competition was a lively, fast moving, and humorous play called Elmer. The much talented cast consisted of Nancy Hill, Kenneth Kinsman. Patricia Yvoodward, llary Louise Blorse. Rosa- mond Vole, Patricia Sim, Dorothy Dodge, .lack tventzell, and Robert Rogers. Kenneth Kinsman walked away with a well deserved gold pin for being the best actor in that presentation. Toward the end of our Sophomore year we again chose some more leaders to represent us in the Student Vouncil. These were Daniel Kelleher, George Little, Lionel lielanger, Allan Lawson, Ruth Yvoodbury and Nancy Hill. During all this time we were beginning to feel more and more at home at B. H. S. W'hen we entered our Junior year. we still had the feeling of inferiority to our upper classmen, but it was not so intense. This year we again competed in Drama .Yiglzf and presented a colorful play with a beautiful Dutch setting. The Juniors who took a part in this play were: Kenneth Kinsman, Tony Paglia, George Little, Hlartin Kelley , Patricia YYoodward, and Dorothy Dodge. Patty YYoodward received the gold pin this year for her excellent portrayal of Gretchen, a quaint little Dutch girl. For our Vlass Officers during our Junior year we elected Daniel Kelleher, president: George Little, vice-president: Helen Peterson, secretary: and for the second consecutive year we elected Beverle Hull as the class treasurer. They all performed their duties well and with the utmost responsibility and more than deserve any praise that might be given them. As it came closer and closer to the end of the Junior year we felt more and more in place at H. H. S. ive were beginning to understand now why the Seniors felt the way that they did. In fact we were beginning to feel that way ourselves. Now we are at last Seniors and it is really a grand feeling that will be remembered for a long time. t-Hi Senior Drama Night Presentation 1'IIRIS'l'MAS THIMMIXGS fast FIRST BI'RGl,AH Martin Kc-lly SEVUXD Bl'HGLAli Tony Paglia FNVLE JUF BIf'Kl 0HD. During the first quarter of our first year, we elected for our Sophomore officers: Pf6.?I'If6lIf, VVilliam llercaldi Secretary, Nancy Hord Vice-Pre.s'z'cle11f, Allen Elliot TTKG!-S'lll'F7', Polly Parker When Drama Night came, we submitted the winning play. Blake Room For Rodney, The cast was as follows: Richard Lawrence Geraldine Snell Lillian Horne Falvin Perkins Gordon Hamilton Sumner Peabody IYilberta Bunker Richard Lawrence merited the gold pin for the best acting in the play in which he portrayed the leading role of Rodney. Many sophomore boys and girls were prominent in the various sports offered at Beverly High. VVhen summer came and ended our activities for a time. we were all a bit sorry. but we looked forward to an equally enjoyable junior year. The school year of '42-'4-3 began a trifle confused, for the shadow of war had en- tered our studies. As thc year progressed. we made the acquaintance of several courses in the VVar Program and later many of us became active in Victory Forps. As our first duty, we elected our Junior class officers: Presiflelzf, Vtiilliam NIercaldi Secrelary, Jane Howarth IIIUFU-PfF.9I'fll'Ilf, Allen Elliot Treasurer, Nancy Hord In the annual Drama Night Vompetition, our play won the banner for the sec- ond consecutive year. This time Bessie Tibbets won the gold pin for her wonderful acting. As before, the boys and girls of B.H.S. '44 excelled in sports. The outstanding boys in basketball were Douglas Vram, Paul Harrington, Howard Keech, Robert 3ICM3h0Il, Norman Sciamanna, and Richard Shea. In football, we had our representatives too. with IValdo Harlow, Paul Harring- ton, Robert Hathaway, Allen Elliot, Phillip Carr, and Donald Farr. The girls interested in basketball were Elinor Fielding, 1Iuriel lluir. lIary Reid. May Gorman, and Helen Swanson. In addition, several girls played field hock- ev and we were well represented with Elinor Fielding, Nancy Hord, 1Iuriel lluir, ' 'ay Gorman, Mary Bernasconi, and June Donnelly doing a fine job on the field. NIembers of the Student f'ouncil, who served us well were Natalie Cole, Gordon Hamilton, Mabel Him, Nancy Hord, Jane Howarth, and llartha Tucker. They car- ried on into the senior year. During the fifth week of the fourth quarter. two more members were elected to serve with these six. VVe are proud of Harold Foote, James Kearney, James Odell, Arthur Kluge, John Ross, Edward lVIartin, Albert Loranger, Thomas Vfickers, and Arthur Hard- ing, who have answered the call of their country and entered the service. The class of '4-4 is looking forward to a senior year as interesting and busy as ourjunior and sophomore years. In the annals of Beverly High , there could never have been a more pathetic group of sophomores. Corridors, punctuated by doors, stretched for yards in every direction, and there the annual tussel with lockers began, causing a hum of exasperation to hover over the school. At first we were shy and awkward in our new surroundings, but soon home room officers and members of the House of Delegates were elected, clubs were organ- ized, and we were finally recognized by our fellow students and the faculty as a help- ful link in the well-run machinery of this grand school. The war came close to us. Because of preparations for rationing and Victory f'orps organization, we were the orphans of Beverly High without officers or faculty adviser until late in the third quarter, but we soon developed initiative and self- reliance. A large number of our class entered the trade School and studied printing, auto mechanics, and sheet metal. ive are proud of Wlilbur Surles, Tom Ward, and Emerson lYright, who put away their hooks and joined the armed forces. Our first introduction to high school entertainment was a social in the gym. Although, as sophomores, we did not have an opportuity to have a dance of our own, we immensely enjoyed the entertainment offered by the upper classmen. Drama Night was an addition to our class high lights when the sophomores produced a hilarious comedy entitled Elmer and the Leveling. The prize for the best acting was awarded to lvilliam Floyd. Although we did not succeed in winning the banner, we gave the seniors and juniors some stiff competition and the audience a good many laughs. Our football season was soon under way. To the Second Team the sophomores contributed: Robert Pelonzi, who saw action as a substitute for Paul Ambrefel William Kelly, Ralph Lewis, Dave Trefry. Joseph Hirschhorn. Other sophomores, Clifford Roby, John Farr, lNIichael Pisani, Thomas Quinn, and Dennis Shea. provid- ed heax y practice opposition. Finally the basketball season popped its head around the corner, and our lone representative on the Boys' First Team, fllifford Roby, sprang into the spot light. Dennis Shea and Eugene La llontagne showed speed and playing ability on the Second Team. Un our Track Team were: Robert Benjamin, John Hilton. James llitchell. Kent Rudkin, Donald Richardson, Richard Burr, and Edward Sullivan. Promising players on the Girls Basketball Team were: Blargaret Walton. Louise Fielding, Lorraine Andersen, Eleanor Ricci. Annette St. Pierre. Frances Bonjorno. A capable group of girls represented the sophomores on the Girls Field Hockey Team. They were: llargaret VValton, Sally Ann Vohn. Naomi Berman. Joan Lindberg, Annette St. Pierre, Louise Fielding. Frances Bonjorno. and Blanche Dodge. Thus we are striving towards better education for a lasting peace and a crowning Victory. never knowing what lies beyond the horizon.
