THE STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council, the upper house of tl1e Student Congress, under the guidance of Miss Whalen, has done a great deal for Beverly High by promoting school spirit among the students. Through the Student Congress, the students have an opportunity to express their opinions of the organization and rulings ol' tl1e school, as well as to offer suggestions for improving student conditions. All suggestions passed by the House of Delegates are sent to the Student Council. If passed by the Council, they are then given to lNIr. Pierce for approval. Besides its work of helping in the government of the school, the Student Council has certain specific duties allotted to it, such as the responsibility for the elections and for the social of the incoming classg the preparation of the H- Ilive, our school hand- bookg and the handling of the advertising for the School Play. The most memorable event in the recent history of the Council was the State Convention of Student Councils held here last April at which delegates from schools of many cities of Massachusetts were present. That day will not easily be forgotten by those who attended the meeting. Page Fartyffive HOUSE OF DELEGATES i l The House of Delegates, sponsored by Miss Ellis, might Well be called The Voice of the Pupils, as it is the most representative group in the school. Every home room has one delegate and an alternate, the larger senior home rooms having three delegates. New business is brought up in the home rooms on the Wednesday preceding the meeting and voted upon. If passed, the questions are carried to the House by the delegate, where action is taken on the ideas. Every question is given proper consideration, and not one is overlooked. If the delegates find the proposition un- reasonable, it is sent back to the home room from which it came. Most of the ques- tions, however, are either referred to a committee or passed, after general discussion. The matter then passes into the hands of the Student Council. The same procedure is repeated, and if the bill is found satisfactory, it is finally given to Mr. Pierce. He has the power of vetoing or of approving it, thus making it a law or resolution of the school. This year the House has given its full support to the publishing of this Your Book. The efficient committee was: Dean Wood bury, Richard Cressy, Thomas Hoy, Barbara Stott, Carolyn Merrizlni. Page Forty-six: The Safety Patrol Quiet please This familiar phrase is heard continually in the corridors during passing. Although the safety Patrol uses a multiple of phrases, they all tend toward the efficiency of this large organization. The main purpose ofthe squad is to maintain order in the corriders. The members, chosen by a committee of retiring members and two faculty members, are efficient leaders. Besides patrolling the corridors, they usher at nearly every public school affair held in the auditorium. Another of their many duties is to seats th pupils at assembly and to supervise their marching in and out of the assembly hall. The squad consists of the captain, four lieutenants, eight sergeants, and a limited number of privates. Every Monday morning, from 8.20 a.m. to 8.35 a.m., the chief officers meet with Mr. Pierce, the adviser, to discuss problems which they have met While on duty. Page Forty-.seven The Stagecratit Club Although the Stagecratt Flub is one ol the smallest organizations in the school.it has contributed tremendously to the success of our assemblies. The boys, under the direction of lWIr. Kimball, have spent much time and effort in building sets, painting scenery, and planning lighting effects. It is very interesting to watch the boys at work. Among their various duties are the directing of the spot-light, managing the curtain, the switchboard, and the projector, Many successful per- formances have depended largely on the skillful management of these stage managers, electricians, and artists. Besides the extra hours spent on building the scenery. the boys must attend several rehearsals of a play to set and shift the scenery and plot the lighting. Only those who have been in the plays know how vital and important are the stageeraft boys. Too often their only reward is the realization ot work well done. Radio Club l The radio club provides an opportunity for boys to get practical experience in the design, con- struction, and operation of apparatus used in public-address work and radio telephony. The activ- ities of the club center around the high school public-address system, used to re-enforce speech and music in the auditorium during assemblies, and in other parts of the building and gymnasium as needed. This public-address system was designed, built, and is operated by the members of the club under the direction of the club sponsor, Mr. Jones. MA'I'lll'IM.X'l'Ii S K'l,l'li CLUB NOTES LE CERCLE FRANCAIS Games, songs, talks, and plays furnish the programs for the Le Cercle Francais meetings. Besides these, the club sponsors many outside entertainments. This year an illustrated talk on Germany was presented before the school. The climax of two splendid years was the two one-act plays pre- sented on April 17. The Doctor in Spite of Him- seU and Isidor-e's Surprise were certainly tops in entertainment. One of the unusual features of the club is its printed programs. At the first meeting, printed folders are distributed which present the pro- grams for the year and the committees in charge of the meetings. This is the only club that can boast such a novelty. The Misses Davis, Sterenberg, Russell, and Wolfe are the guiding spirits of the Le Cercle PHOTOCRAFT CLUB In May of 1934, the Beverly High School Photocraft Club was organized under the direction of Mr. Rhuland. In 1934-1935 some of the football games were photographed, both in still and motion pic- tures. Throughout the year the club experi- mented in developing and printing. In 1935-1936 a studio was set up and several pupils had their picture taken. In September 1936, Mr. Nutting became the sponsor. Activities were begun by photograph- ing the football games, with both the large and miniature cameras. A new dark room was built for the club, and a new enlarging machine was purchased. The club members were offered the gigantic task or taking the picture for the Year Book. The proposition was acceptedg and although many hours of work were put into the project, the ex- perience proved very beneficial. Many students had their class pictures taken by the club. LATIN CLUB The Latin Club was organized to give the Latin students of Beverly High School further opportunity to become acquainted with the Roman life and times. In fulfillment of this objective, the meetings are crowded with inter- esting projects. The members participate in plays, sing Latin songs, play games, make scrap- books, and do many other profitable things. The most outstanding events in the life of the Latin Club during the past three years have been those meetings attended by the Latin Club from Salem High School. These meetings have been very beneficial as the clubs have an oppor- tunity to exchange ideas. DEBATING CLUB The school must surely be proud of the mem- bers of this year's debating team who were heard on station WCOP on March 10th in a debate with Lynn English. The same subject, co-education, was debated in an assembly before the school on February 23, and was thoroughly enjoyed by the students. With the help of Miss Stiles, the sponsor. the speeches are all written by the debaters themselves. Challenges are received from such neighboring high schools as Lynn English. Haverhill, and Swampscott. Impromptu debates are often held in the club meetings which give the members a chance to Francais. express their opinions and which helps them to understand current topics. MATH CLUB The Math Club has proved not only entertain- ing but also very instructive. There are two separate divisions of the clubg one is under the direction of Miss Hett while the other is spon- sored by Miss Chynoweth. The latter deals specifically with advanced algebra. The other division is commonly referred to as the Slide Rule Club. The members deal with Iogarithms of numbers. They extract square and cube roots of numbers as well as multiplying and dividing bv the slide rule method. The members are giv- en extra credit for their efforts. COMMERCIAL CLUB The Commercial Club is one of the most profi- table and interesting clubs in the school. It was started in 1930 by Mr. Gaylord and some of the eommerial teachers at the request of the students. Ever since its beginning, the members have enjoyed many varied and most interesting speak- ers. For the past few years a trip has been made each quarter to such plants as the Hood Company in Charlestown. the Telephone Company, the United Shoe Machinery Corporation, and the Pequot Mills. This year there are some very capable officers working under the guidance of Miss Brown, the sponsor. The Fall Outing was held at Mosley's Woods in Amesbury and was attended by fifty members and friends. At the October meeting Mr. Neiland Douglas, Secretary of the Beverly Chamber of Commerce, gave a most profitable talk. On February 4, Miss Mabel Goguen, a former pupil of Beverly High School and an expert typist, gave an amazing exhibition of typewriting and told of many faults of stenographers. Altogether the accomplish- ments of this club are many. RIFLE CLUB The handling and care of firearms and target practice are, of course, important features of the Rifle Club, but by no means are they the only ones. Through the Rifle Club, the boys and girls of Beverly High have an opportunity to learn of the many phases of camp life: first-aid, wood craft, and animal and plant life. In learning about camp life, the members were instructed in how to choose camp sites, proper arrangements of camps, types of tents, and many other essentials for living in the open. At one of the meetings, movies of different camp sites were shown, accompanied by a talk by our principal,Mr. Pierce. And so the Rifle Club shoots on, furnishing education and healthful recreation for all who join. Mr. Howard, Miss Jefferies, and Miss Sterenberg are the capable sponsors. GLEE CLUB The Glee Club, one of our oldest clubs, is under the direction of Mr. Freeman Garniss, whom we are very fortunate in having. The main purpose of this club is to develop an appreciation of better music. The group consists of both boys and girls who are intensely interested in music, which fact shows in their several remarkable perfor- mances at assemblies and on Parents' Night. One of the most pleasing of these was the piece Deep River with Miss Paulinewhitaker as soloist. Another was the Magic Flute by Mozart. Miss Teague has been most successful with the girls, basketball team. Coach Ellsworth Red', Richardson has warmed the hearts of Beverly fans with his successful seasons of football and baseball. Aiding this gentleman is Fred Fish', Ellis, who is an inspiration. Back in harness again is Coach Edward Bodger,' Carroll, who has been responsible for this year's golf team. Much beloved by all of Beverly is Coach Doc Rudkin, who has had successsful track and basketball teams here at our school for a great many years. It is hoped that Beverly may be for- ever graced by such an efficient staff of coaches.
