'Iwo mu-derous, low-tackling, men starred in defense, while not playing offense regularly. They were linebaoloers, Delmar Nesper and Gregg Fiergola. Hilmar Hafner, who became ineligible in the latter part of the season, also did a tremendous job of dodging opposing blockers and tackling runners behind the lines. Eight new men lettered this year. They were Ken Reidemnn, junior .full beck, Jerome Strom, Junior tackle, Dale Um-uh, junior quarter-back, Gregg Fiergola, Junior linebacker, Jim Abbey, sophomore right tackle 5 Teddy Davidson, fresh- man halfback, Delmar Reaper, freshman lineback- erg and Hilton Unruh, eighth grade right tackle. Returning lettemen are Delmar Flemer, junior left halfg Wren lliller, junior right guardg Gary llurrq, junior centers Larry Tabert, Jun- ior right tackles Jim Beszler, sophomore right haf, and Walter Binder, sophomore guard. ' The 1952 liner Football Team, although losing eight of last year's first eleven, and using a completely new baclcfield and nearly a complete new line turned in a fairly successful season. The Miners, behind coach Kline, fin- ished the season with four wins, two losses and one tie game. With high spirits , the Miners romped over their opponents :Ln both the running and passing departments. They totaled 11151 yards, averag- ing 207 yards per game, to their opponents 1078 1511 average by rushing. Taking to the air they completed a total of 32 passes with a .509 Per- centage to roll their opponents back 14214 yards, averaging 60 yards per game and topping all other teams by 172 yards. Beulah also led their opponents 21-13 in the number of touch- downs and 814-63 :Ln first downs. In the backfield Jim Bassler, right hdf starred by ga.:l.n:I.ng the best yard percentage. He totaled H17 yards, averaging 7.18 yards. Delmar Flemmer, although carrying the ball more frequently, totaled 11 7 yards. Flemer also starred in touchdowns, with seven to his credit while Reidemann scored five extra points. This season saw several long runs, as Ried- emannpiolcedupast. lhrys fumble andwent80 yards for a TD. Bassler also plunged through the St. Marys line and scored after trotting Bo tiring yards. Another spectacular run was made when ltilton Oat grabbed the bell on the Assumption Abbey kick-off and behind vicious line blocking, dodged through the Abbey defense sprinting 90 yards for e touchdown. 5 V rw- . ,r 11. 6 , 'E U pi E' ' 1 1' Zl' e 1 er- s ,a'vf nstte 1 1 J 9 33 The Miners will lose five lettermen this year through graduation. They are Jerom Her- man, left end, Milton Ost, left guard, Ken Dav- idson, left tackle 5 Ken lierkel, defensive half- back and Hilmar Hafner, right end.
