'WJHAT' S What's going on over there? This is an often re- peated question. Sometimes a tone of belligerency suggests disapproval and implies that a good ,explanation should be forthcoming, or else. The question is often legitimate, and an explanation is in order But the same question, in an- other spirit, signifies an in- terested patron desirous of keeping up with what is being done. Early last fall, word passed around that a cyclorama was needed for the stage. The proposition was talked over at the board meeting, and it was suggested that the P. T. A. might help in its purchase. Presented to the P.T.A4, that body responded in its usual cooperative fashion. It was agreed that each organization pay sos. The material was or- dered, teachers, custodian, and students joined in its in- stallation. Now we have a beautiful, richly colored stage for our programs. Bettsville wants an tan- nual. Last year's was fine, but we want this one better yet. O.K. Miss Lee, you spon- sor it. Have fthe students sign up for the work thev wish to contribute. Organize the staff, go to work. Presto, and this beautiful volume from which you are now reading is the result, except that there was more to the presto than that. Tired girls, after a full day in school, pressed typewriter keys until late at night, weary feet pressed the sidewalks of our own and neigh- boring towns seeking advertis- ers, tired arms and hands pressed the crank of the mimeo- graph, every add which you see in this volume was hand cut. That's the annual. And so with uThe Echon. A man came in one day with a muscial box. He demon- GOING ON?n strated. HOur school Wahta that,H said many students. All right, iet's get it. Miss Hurlburt and Miss Lee, you are the sponsors. A recordio Club was organized - 50 students. They went to work. In April the installation was completed Radio programs to every roomg public address to every room, separately or collectively, phonograph to all rooms, a de- vice for making our own re- cords for speech improvement, and a public address system for the auditorium Wien needed UStudents get hurt on the playground, or get illiduring the day. We need a 'hospital room for them.H Thus fgpoke the Student Council. Result-- the hospital room is equipped and ready for use. Uwhen we get to be sen- iors, we'll need money for our senior trip. Why' couldn't we start saving our money now?W With this idea in mind most of the classes have organized class savings accounts and each student is making his or her contribution to the fund to be used at graduation time. And so it goes. Lesson mastery is kept in the fore- grpund, but numerous other beneficial activities are car- ried along on the shoulders of many students, guided by some teacher. As teachers, our observation indicates that on the whole Bettsville has an industrious and contented group of students who enjoy going to their school. We be- lieve these extra activities help create this feeling, and at the same time are education- al to those who particiapte, and beneficial to the school. WE D E D1 GATE Recognition is very seldom given to those, who are the closest and most with us. It is only through carelessness and thoughtlessness that we fail to appreciate openly the ones who are working the hardest for our own good. This annual of l94O is dedicated to one such individual- Mr- Morton, having functioned in our school in the capacity of -principal and teacher for nine years, has shown a very deep interest in the Pupils and their activities, It is through his undaunted cooperation that many successful events have been made possible. Fine teaching and character displayed through the yGa1 S in our school make us proud to dedicate this, our third annual, to Mr. Morton.
