MIXED CHORUS Musical ability has been this year by the demonstrated Mixed Chorus both as an entire group and as a basis for small Chapel programs, er groups. P.T.A. programs, festivals, both county and local, have been means by which this group has been able to improve. Since improvement comes only through practice and perform- ance, it is only fitting to say that this chorus has not only been given opportunities but has also taken advantage of thbmo Those who represented the school in the vocal contest were Corrine Fravel, Doris Swartz, and Isabel Klopp. Each received an nexcellentn rating. STUDENT COUNCIL This group, newly organ- ized during the early part of the school year, cane about as a result of the recognition of the need of a student group which well represented the en- tire school body to talk over and pass on matters concerning the school. This Student Coun- cil, as it was called, was or- ganized after much student dis- cussion and deliberation on the effectiveness of one such organization. From a list of worthy candidates, Junior Dicken was elected president. Each class was p ermitted to have three representatives in the .organ- ization, thereby, making a fair distribution of attention Each member had like power to submit any suggestions to the organization for discussion. These problems were ones which came more or less directly from the group of which the member was representative. Among some of the improve ments around the school brought about by the Student Council are: the electric score board, the store room, the bell in the Home Economics room, new regulations in the library, the new ttme schedule for assembly each day, and the backing of a hospital'campaigpe It is the desire of the present Student Council 'that, through years to come, the work which has been started this year may be carried on in just as successful a manner. Second row - Glenn Marshall, Bob Burd, Mr. Durrett, Bob Andrews Paul Steffanni, Wilbur Windau First row - Martha Roush, Corrine Fravel, Doris Swartz, Karl Turner, Junior Dicken, Jimmy Sullivan, Barbara Jeseemnn, Evelyn Puffenberger, Betty Hartsel. Ned Robinett was not pre- sent for the picture. GIRLS ENSEMBIE This group, which first took form during the school year 1958-'59, was organized for the purpose of giving those voices which blend nice- ly an opportunity to express themselves by singing more widely varied types of musie.' The members of this group were chosen on the basis of their vocal ability, their reading ability, their :appre- ciation of finer music, their cooperative spirit, and their willingness to spend time out- side of school for the purpose of preparing themselves both for their own enjoyment and that of the community. Those girls who were che- sen this year are as they ap- pear in the picture from left to right: Corrine Fravel, Ruth Baker, Olive Lucille Mauk, Doris Swartz, Peggy Hoffman, Jessie Alyee Boos, Isabel Klcpp, Helen Burkett, and Lois Yocom. During the school year, the ensemble has made several appearances before such groups as the County Teacher's Insti- tute, the various chm ches in Bettsville, our school chapel programs, and various school programs. On March 50, the ensemble fulfilled its long-looked-for- ward-to opportunity of singing in the District Contest. They managed to forego all hind- rances and not only particip- ated in but also cane out with flying colors. Although they were entered in Class A cms- petition, the ensemble was giv- en a l- rating which made them eligible to enter the State Contest to be held later in the spring.
