REVIEW OF 1959-'40 This, the year of '59-40, has proven to be one of the most successful periods in the history of our fair school. Throu hout, the ear the teach- B Y ers and students have manifest- ed and maintained a spirit of cooperation that has reached a peak of satisfaction. This is clearly shown in the organ- ization of the Student Council and the Recordio Club. The organization of the Recordio Club displays our students' willingness to make our school program more efficient through their own labor. In the field of extra-cur- ricular activities, there has been more spirit and more suc- cess than in any other year. Especially in the realm of sports, have the Bobcats ad- vanced. A total of five bas- ketball trophies were added to our case this year. The boys' varsity brought home three, the girls, oneg and the grad- ers, one. In baseball the cats advanced to the county finals, there to be conquered byia strong New Riegel'nine. On the other hand,Bbbcats were equally educated ,in HC sharps in Asia Minor sn as assists, double playsg and dribbling. In the violin solo Bettsville went to the state. In the ensemble Bettsville was again a state participant, The Band, Orchestra and Mixed Chorus proved a great success this year as in previous years. Although several Bobcat lass- es entered the vocal solos , they were not so successful as our instrumental contestants. Toward the latter part of the year, debate took over. Through careful study of the Subject UResolved: That the Government should own and oper ate the railroads,n our debat ers advanced to third place in the county meet. Also, in the speech department we had the one-act play division. This year this activity proved its merit. By carefu 'direction and patient practice the one act play, nFather's Day Onu, advanced to the upper crest of county competition to receive a beautiful trophy and the privilege to go to the state competition. In the first triangle of the state they placed second, Early in the year the Junior play, nThe Dutch Detect iven, was presented and proved a huge success. Later this year the Senior play, HFlat Tiresn was given and it also turned out a great success, thus rounding out the dramatic division of the up-and-coming speech department. Then the last but not least mark of a great year is this piece of journalism nThe 1940 Indexn. It has taken mon ths of work behind good faith ful leadership to give you this review of the events of '59-'4O. It, along with the bi-monthly edition ofHThe Echo the Bobcat informer, has very definitely given us experience in writing facts interestingly and simultaneously gave you a summary of school highlights. Indeed, the year of '40 is the high-water mark of the success of Bettsville High. As you leaf through this book and see where Bettsville hae overcome many obstacles, you will have HThe Indexn to a suc- cessful year.

DEBATE The debate group this year spent an exceedingly active, and very worthwhile season de4 bating the question, Resolvedg That the Federal Government should own and operate the railroads. This question was a difficult one requiring much backgrou d and preparation. From the beginning of December until the end of March, these ten students jour neyed to libraries within the county for study on the ques tion, and to many schools for practice debates. We traveled to Thompson, Old Fort, Tiffin Columbian, and New Riegelg and we had Attica, Jackson Amsden, Old Fort, and Pemberville here during the season. The two highlights of the season came at the Findlay tournament, where Bettsville students rated in the top twenty of sixty schools all larger than oursg and at the county tournament at Amsden, where Bettsville placed third. This group had a diffi- cult task which all members performed willingly and well. The teams entered in the count y tournament were--Affirma- tive, Pauline Steffanni and Jimmy Sullivang and Negative Karl Turner and Norman Fry. Special mention should also be made of two excellent debaters who will no doubt make a place for themselves next year, Janet Hartsel and Evelyn Puf- fenberger. Standing - Helen Burkett, Miss Hurlburt, Rita Kuhn Seated - Evelyn Puffenberger, Janet Hartsel, Pauline Steffanni, Jimmy Sullivan, Norman Fry, Karl Turner, Robert Andrews, Isabel Klopp ONE-ACT PLAY HFather's Day Onu or NMother's Day Offu, the -con- test one-act play this year, went through a very busy and successful season. The story was of NMotherH fplayed by Janet Hartsell, who wanted a vacation, and HFatherN KFrancis Millerl, who thought she didn't need one because Hall she had to do was look after the house, and four children practically grown with lots of competent help.H The play is a portion of the day in which father de- cides to take charge of the household because 'mother fusses too much. His motto is - 1 Take things more calmly. The children are home from school on this particular day and after Judy, the high school age daughter, whom the twins call Hdudy Forgot,n CEleanor Harrison? goes riding with a young man instead of staying home to help ivr motherg and the twins Chutho Baker and Claude Kingl sell Mother's Oriental Rug to the Junk Mang and Sedalia fBetty Feasell the Ufool girlu color- ed nurse can't take care of baby without help from fatherg he finally decides to let her taker her vacation and says HMaybe l'll go with you.n Two friends of Judy's are played by Corrine Fravel and Jeanne Hoffman. The cast is to be congrat ulated for its fine work in keeping up the spirit of the play so well over such an ex- tended period of time. To Miss Hurlburt goes much com- mendation for her splendid coaching.' .9 I
