F3-'N'- SWEETHEART BALL N I an 4:-:P X CHRISTINE BULLINGTON SHELBY SMITH PEGGY DESHON SWEETHE RT B LL The night of February 'l3th will be one of those unforgettable nights for many BHS students. It was the culmination of weeks of won- dering, hoping, and anxiously waiting for the annual Sweetheart Ball. Byron Ziegler and his orchestra provided the music, while the beautiful decorations and soft lights provided the atmosphere. It was not long before we were all in the mood that only ci Sweetheart Ball can produce. Shelby Smith reigned as Queen over the Sweetheart Ball of 1960. She was crowned by last year's queen, Judy Ollar. Following the coronation, Queen Shelby, her attendants, Peggy DeShon and Christ- ine Bullington and their escorts led the royal dance. On several oc- casions she has sung for various civic organizations as well as school activities. During her stay here, Gitte has taught us much about Denmark and she, in turn, has come to know and appreciate many phases of the American way of life. gf .svyg This was a complete suc- cess! WENDELL HILL, Coach Summer time - was Baseball time and the bulldogs put to- gether another fine season. The climax of the year was the victory in the sectional tournament. In the opening round, the Bulldogs whipped defending State Champ, Muscatine, on a mighty hitting barrage led by Dave Cox and Don Gray. In the next contest they easily slipped past Durant. The open-round of the district, however, saw the team losing a close contest to St. Mary's of Clinton. There were many fine performances throughout the year. Dave Cox set a' record by hitting six home runs. Rookies Gene Voss and Jim Dilts turned in two fine pitching per- formances, hurling no-hit and one-hit games, respectively. , J 1 L r Q Q5 . 5 lf ' Tig f -in DAVE COX DON GRAY 1 Iowa City 4 3 Clinton' 1 5 Muscatine 4 4 Moline' 3 5 St. Mary's 4 6 Muscatine 3 0 Iowa City 9 7 Clintonf 6 3 Molinef 5 6 Davenport' 'l Rookie Barretto, southpaw hurler, shows his form in delivering a pitch. Opponents provided little competition for the rampaging Black and Gold eleven. Though the successes were due to team efforts throughout the cam- paign, ma ny individual standouts appeared. S e n i o r lineman Dale Dexter, who was named as the most valuable line player in the Quint- Cities, led the hard charging line on both offense and defense. Fred Haber, veteran halfback, clicked off over four hundred yards even though he ap- peared in little more than half of the games due to an iniury. His fine, con- sistent running aided the team avr., throughout the year. Paul McNurlen, who ran the team from his spinback spot, led in passing and was also one of the top rushers. There were standouts among the iuniors, too. Jim Dilts, a halfback playing his first year of Bettendorf football, led the team in rushing, amassing nearly a thousand yards. Scott Rocker set a Quint-City record as the highest scoring end in area history. Steve Grossman added fine line-play and will no doubt be among next year's standouts, too. Eleven lettermen will return to play next season. Included are five backs and six linemen. They will form the nucleus for the Bulldogs' first entry in the Little Six next year. ff ge-.-it w 1 f ' LARRY LYBECK . ff, GE 1 X, -ll r I -4-. Even though only two veterans were on hand at the beginning of the year, the squad proceeded to win ten of the fourteen Illowa. games and finished in third place. Until the last weeks of the season, they were in strong contention for the champion- ship. In the last game of the season they were within ten seconds of second place. A last second basket by Savanna gave them a two point win and second honors in the loop. Playing with mainly iuniors in this, the last year in the lllowa, the Bulldogs will be tougher yet, next year when they enter the Little Six! The sophomores also finished with a winning season. They won ten of the eighteen including eight conference games. Their league record was identical with that of the preceding season. The tower, a popular place for pep slogans, was taken down because of obsolescence. No longer will mysterious night intruders have occasion to scale the tower the night before a big game. The tower is gone. BHS's latest addition to the athletic facilities is the new press box shown at the left. The two story structure was donated by local businessmen. It provides comfortable facilities for visiting press and makes the task of scorekeeping much easier. Thank you local businessmen. 3 Q 1 5 - I' 1 w 1. 2 E w 1 E .1 3 ,Q 2 r+.
