The world of Bettendorf High School is interpreted through the pages of the GROWL, published weekly in the BETTENDORF PRESS. Activities of GROWL staff members during the school year 1958-59 varied all the way from meeting rigorous deadlines on stories to fund-rais- ing by selling concessions at ball games. Whether the task is pasting up copy or writing the editorial for the week, it is this connecting link with the exciting world of journalism that the participating GROWL member seeks. PEP CLUB A high-pitched roar arose from the Pep Club as the Bettendorf Bull- dogs scored another touchdown. Cheers filled the air when another basket was made. Such are typical occurances throughout the year. The Pep Club of Bettendorf High School has been established for the purpose of encouraging support and enthusiasm for our team. For the second straight season the Illowa conference championship trophy came to the halls of Bettendorf High School. The Black and Gold team breezed through seven conference opponents and two nonconference foes to become one of six unde- feated teams in the state of Iowa. Bettendorf dominated the statistics, too! Record books didn't stand a chance when Merrit Parsons let loose his squad. Led by Don Gray and Dave Cox, the Bulldogs appeared high on the lists of offensive statistics. The Bulldogs set a state record with their total of- fensive of 3.890 yards. The 3,060 yards gained in rushing likewise broke the old mark, and the 830 yards gained by passing were good enough to lead all but four teams. The Bulldogs averaged 432 yards in each of their nine tilts. Numerous top football prep polls rated Bettendorf as the number ten team in the state. Individuals turned in top performance too. Don Gray's total of 1843 yards was topped by only one in the stateg his fine passing arm gave him 755 yards, enough for fourth place. Gray also ranked sixth in rushing. Gray smashed for an average of 205 yards per game as he ended with a career mark of 4,602 yards in three years of varsity play. Dave Cox also performed brilliantly. Eighth in total offense, Dave ranked fourth in rushing in the state. His rushing average of 10.6 yards per carry was second. Dave caught most of Don Gray's passes and went on to lead the state in pass receiving with 638 yards and 8 T.D's. Cox led his nearest rival by over 250 yards. Defense was not missing from the team either. Led by Cecil Ritter, Roger Young and Bill Soth in the line, the Bulldogs stopped opponents excellently for an average just over 200 yards a game. Cox, Gray, Ritter and Soth were named to many All-Star teams in the area Gray was also named to the All-State, second team squad. Cox and Young were named co-captains for this most successful 1958 season. mw- DAVE COX DON GRAY GORDON HARRISON TOM HAYGOOD Cox is stopped! Even though new Head Coach Byron james had few experienced wrestlers to work with, by the end of the season, he had built up a very strong team. Composed mainly of sophomores and juniors, Coach james' squad finished second in the District tournament. Trino Gomez, Cecil Ritter, and Roger Young represented Betten- dorf in the State Tournament held at Cedar Falls. All three placed in the meet. They compiled enough points to place Bettendorf seventh out of 64 large schools which competed. Trino and Cecil were named to be co-captains for the season.
