A man who will let students into his office or home and make them feel important there, Reverend Rudolph G. Matthews is the recipient of the dedication of the 1973 B-Cean. The people who have made this decision feel strongly that this man is the epitome of what we want our subject to be. Reverend Matthews dedicates himself to making people earn. A native of Neese, South Carolina, he moved to Florida at an early age. He was captain of the football and basketball teams in high school. An all southern tackle at Bethune- Cookman Jr. College he also excelled in sports at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Joining Bethune-Cookman as coach in 1946 he compiled an outstanding 67-17-3 record, including an SIAC cham- pionship in 1952. Although he was outstanding as an athlete, most of his classmates at Morehouse College remember him as a speaker with the glibness and penetrating intelligence of a Shakespearian actor. They were not surprised when he heard the call of the Christian ministry and became a full fledged minister in 1955. Since the early sixties he has guided the destiny of the many hundred members of Mount Bethel Baptist Church where he is pastor. Although he is a full time minister, Rev. Matthews continues to serve as Assistant Professor of Physical Education. Above: Rev. Matthews addresses a sports award banquet.
